How about steam cleaning under the hood ?
@Chris_at_Home
@Chris_at_Home 3 жыл бұрын
I wash everything under the hood with a small electric pressure washer that won’t cut seals. I also wash the engines on snowmobiles and side by side. I never use soap and never put the wand with in few feet. I’ve never had a problem i always run the engine with the hood opened for about 30 minutes then take it fora drive. My only road vehicles are three Chevy 4x4 pickups, one is a 1984 3/4 ton that runs great but the body is shot. I have a snowplow on it and do a few driveways. The others are a 98 3/4 extended cab and a 12 1500 Crew cab.

I had Chrysler's biggest fanciest car a while back: the full size LHS, moon roof, rear wing, pinstriping, leather interior, power everything... it had 4 recalls on it and they sent me a letter it was unsafe to drive, they towed it in, they dragged their feet on fixing it, Chrysler filed 2009 bankruptcy and disappeared it since it was sitting at a Chrysler dealership... nothing I could do... my beautiful car was gone... I searched local junkyards for it... a Chrysler mechanic prolly fixed it and is driving it... I still have the key, maybe I can steal it back if I can come across it...

It's entirely how you treat anything. Try having a 1994 Plymouth with 419,314 miles that was purchased new and with proper maintenance by regularly servicing the main components such as oil changes and changing the pan filter in the transmission and tie rods wheel hub assemblies back shocks and brake pads so many times I've lost count it's never failed to get me to work and back home throughout it's time. So like I said if you want anything to last treat it with respect.

Crank windows are definitely still able to break... i had a 1979 honda CVCC with crank windows and the driver side didnt roll up or down. Parts were so hard to find for windows on an old import honda that i sold the car before i ever fixed it. My 1993 mazda b2600 also has crank windows and the drivers side one is stiff to turn and wont really roll down all the way.
@DeeDee-qz6cg

To be fair, the plastic bits are the weak link. But it's easier to fix overall. It's more likely that simple parts can be remade from scratch. If it's all mechanical it should be very doable. A guy could even adapt the window mechanism from another car.

I just messaged another person about having more than 419,000 miles on my 1994 Plymouth that I've had since new and it's entirely how you treat it. Doing proper maintenance and not skimping for when it needs something simple such as wheel hub assemblies or basic things like scheduled pan filter replacement every 40k or so on the transmission and changing the oil every 3,500 miles I've gotta say anything can turn into a pile of crap if nothing is done to it and if it's abused. Granted this old thing is quite a sight to behold to say the least lol but hey given that I purchased the dang thing my graduation year I suppose it has earned the right to look a little old like it's owner now hahaha 😂

... and then you have an old door, where you can expect for the switches, window regulator, and motor, to fail at any time so it is fairly foolish to spend the labor hooking it up and probably having to paint it to match if you don't want it looking ghetto, compared to just accepting that keeping a vehicle 100% operational was never expected to be free and in this case, if you're doing the repair, at least do it well enough that (In this case) you'll probably never have to do it again for the driver's window. That's for the regulator. The switch on the other hand, take a close look and see if it can be disassembled and contacts cleaned, some old switch assemblies can be refurbished if you don't mind them looking a little worn on the top plastic.

The owner got 'mad' at the switch and pulled on it too hard--when the actual problem was the motor.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 3 жыл бұрын
If the motor is stalled because the regulator is in a bind, either it will shear the gear (or pucks inside it) or overheat the switch and start melting it if a fuse doesn't blow first. Maybe a fuse DID blow then the owner replaced it with a crappy generic chinese fuse brand which was grossly wrong letting triple the rated current through before blowing. These days I just expect that from generic chinese fuses.

I bought the neighbor's '99 Camry a few years back. Bad driver's door window motor. Got a new one from Rock Auto. Used a KZfaq video to learn how to put it in. Saved myself probably $120+. I locked myself out of my '99 Impreza a few years ago. Broke the left rear window to get in. Still made it to work on time. Bought a junkyard window and figured out how to install it myself because there was NO KZfaq video for it! In terms of pure money, not counting time and running around, it cost me less than $80 to fix it. Well worth it.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 3 жыл бұрын
@xamot80 Maybe, but if it's only $360 then I bet over half that was the labor charge. If someone isn't DIY, does it really make sense to try to save $50 with a 3/4ths worn out junkyard regulator that you also have to pull from the vehicle, when you're paying same labor to install it either way versus a new one? The context is everything. If you have to get a quote to get something done, you're already beyond the stage of junkyard parts.

Depending onthe crappy plastic and rubber stuff under the hood, a bath with WD40 isn't great either. Put them in and they didn't work. Went to the auto store and the clerk was proud to offer me a new ones for 150 bucks each. After almost choking on that offer I went home, took the switch out, cleaned the contacts with a small wire brush and guess what, they worked again.

Short story: The square hole “Robertson Head” screws that you see on trailers came first and as I understand it is still used in Canada more than here. Henry Ford switched to Phillips Head on the model T because the workers couldn’t overtighten them. At a given torque the bit ramps out of the hole. Yes it’s annoying but that is the reason they suck so bad, they are made that way. Like this car, it’s also “made that way”. It was built correctly per the design. Torx screws don’t ramp out so they need for the power equipment to limit the tightening torque, and can be tightened tighter than Phillips screws.
