Good afternoon KZfaqr’s today I’m going to A very special video something that we came across after we replace the timing chain with cheap Chinese tensioners. One of them went bad and are engine started rattling and Wood probably have broken pretty soon if we would not have gotten to it quickly. This vehicle is a 2010 Jeep liberty with a 3.7 this procedure is going to be the same for the 2008 2009 2011 2012 2013 and possibly 2014 Jeep liberty Jeep grand Cherokee with the 3.7 and the Dodge Durango Chrysler Aspen with the 3.7 . This will also be the same for the jeep grand Cherokee 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 and possibly 2013 Jeep grand Cherokee with the 4.7 and 3.7 driveline. These tensioners do not move up and down so if years is moving and you have some noise this is more than likely your problems especially if it’s a fasted noise and consistent through the throttle. So if you have a noise and a misfire code. This may be your solution sorry I didn’t make a video of us to dismantling this but I’m sure it’s pretty self-explanatory and maybe eventually I will make a video of us actually taking it apart because you can show me you’re more than welcome to ask me any questions if I can help I will.
You should watch the whole video .(sometimes I’m fun) So you can inform yourself with all the great information that I put in my videos and God bless. I hope the videos helpful for you!

Good grief I feel you Glenn I had one that I believe needs lifters but it sounded like it was coming from everywhere I bought the truck at 106,000 miles at now has 150,000 miles on it and still ticks from the day I bought it. I tried fixing it a couple times I put a new time in chains and tensioners and it did not help it then I assumed that it was lifter so I replaced the lifters on one head But did not replace both sides and it still ticks I gave up..... If it was a customers car I would’ve never gave up but I couldn’t invest any more time or money into it so I just drive it

Could a tensioner cause a slower knock? I have a 4.7 in my Jeep and I got on oil change well the idiots never screwed the oil filter on all the way so I leaked oil. Didn’t notice anything till I got a noise. Checked the oil and nothing was on the dipstick. Whole 5 quarts low🤦‍♂️ filled it up and noise got quoted but over time it got louder now. I put a Lucas oil additive and it seems to help but I have it on cold starts and about 1k-2kish rpm. Debating rebuild the whole engine but would rather have a quick fix. Can’t lose the daily

@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 4 жыл бұрын
Well the reason it doesn’t make sense to change it while it’s inside the car even though it’s possible is because it would take so much more work to take the piston out then it would to remove the engine remove the oil pan remove the cylinder head the piston Hass to come up through the cylinder head and then go back down inside the cylinder from the cylinder head position so in my opinion it would be easier with the engine removed and the engine sitting on an engine stand I think here at the shop we reman 4.7 23 or $2400 with shipping included don’t quote me on that but I’m pretty sure I’m just about right but yes you can certainly do that at home if you’d like

A buddy of mine and I changed the wire to the second coil and it didn’t help it’s still misfiring do you think it could be the ECM? @sharpcarco

Switch the coil with another coil and see if the misfire moves if it moves you need a new coil if it doesn’t move more than likely there’s a broken wire going to the coil Generally it’s not the ECM

I suggest replacing it with out the hole at the tip of the tensioner and I have a video showing you how to replace it without even removing the timing chain. I recommend using the plate. I have a 2005 Jeep with the 4.7. Makes a nasty knock upon cold start but once the engine reaches temp this noise goes away and the engine is as quite as can be. I am in the process of replacing the timing cover due to a leak and I noticed my passenger timing chain has some slack, about 1/2” gap between chain and the top guide. Could this be that noise? I know a rod knock won’t go away or a rod bearing won’t go away when it’s warm so I’m hoping this is it.
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse while you have that cover off I highly highly highly recommend you replace the timing components do not use cheap Internet timing components. It’s making that noise because the tensioners are not working properly and you definitely have a timing problem if you have a half inch work to play on one side. I’m sorry for the bad news but it’s a good thing that you’re taking apart anyways if you watch one of my videos on how to do the timing it will be as easy as possible for you I hope that’s awful God bless have a great evening if you have anymore questions feel free to reach out to me

Why do you think the engineers put a oil restrictor plate on the tensioner? Could it be to keep up oil pressure supply to other components in the engine?
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 4 жыл бұрын
Well I’m absolutely certain that they put the restrictor plates in there just for that reason. But because we want to have as much oil pressure going to the tensioners as possible when they get higher in mileage we may take them out. The point of that is if somethings already broken it’s already broken.

I can get a video and put it on my channel if it would help you with giving some advice. I'm worried that its my tensioner however i hear it more from under neath the car than in the engine bay. I have changed lifters, rod bearings, and also the Timing Chain Tensioners... And the knock seemed to only get worse after the Timing chain Tensioners were put in. Getting 20lbs of oil pressure at idle/startup, then fairly quickly it goes to 40lbs+ once the oil flows. Not trying to skimp out of the work, but man that is a pain. Is this real? Could this be my issue??? I bought the Tensioner kit from RockAuto... Kicking myself as I'm willing to bet I got what I paid for on the cheap parts end of the deal!!!
@typicalpctech6674
@typicalpctech6674 3 жыл бұрын
mine is the 4.7l variant, and it looks IDENTICAL aside from adding 2 more cylinders if anyone is skeptical of the claim 3.7 / 4.7 even the gasket kit suggests the same, timing chain & tensioner sets suggest 3.7 / 4.7. Engineered simplicity, too bad they aren't 100% bullet proof with their logic (I know they can be reliable if maintained, but I bought mine used, and abused seemingly). Lifter 15 of the 16 were bad, 1 very mild rod bearing wear, changed them anyways. Passenger side, closest to the firewall Cylinder. Engine has great power, stays cool, holds decent oil pressure, but just sounds like a Rod is about to fly out the side! Pulled the Coil wires off of every cylinder and hardly any result in troubleshooting which one is to blame. Got to the passenger side and it seemed like each one suggested a mild issue, but then it would simply recover as if it was fine. I think we are going to tear it back down and look into this. I would love to solve my issue without having to rebuild this thing. Only 90,.000 miles on it currently. So it got an early timing chain replacement. Fired right back up as it was before aside from now it just knocks more than it did. I'm going to remove that oil restrictive plate as well, or look into giving it more flow some other way, think removal will be the way we go.

Well if the prongs on the computer had anything to do with it you would just switch out the sensor..... So that is not the reason that they are not compatible..... They are not compatible because the tone ring on the crank has different amounts of teeth which send a different signal to the computer it has nothing to do with how many prongs around on something. Because you would just switch the sensor out.... Anyways I understand where you’re coming from but that’s not really the reason that they won’t work and when you say that’s the reason they won’t work then people would assume the engine block would be the same and they would be mistaken because you are incorrect.

Hey I'm in Lansing Michigan and I just bought one of these used with a 4.7. I'm having an issue where it presents itself as a miss fire check engine light and runs really rough at start up to the point where it almost stalls out but once I get moving everything smooths out. I know I have an exhaust leak that needs to be repaired but my question is, does the exhaust leak contribute to the rough start and run until warm, or is it a timing issue? I have had several mechanics give me input and I'm listening to all of it but I'm still confused lol. Any input from someone that works on these on a regular basis would be appreciated. Hello Will this is Clay I don’t know if you and I know each other or not or if you were the one that bought this truck from me I don’t think so though because mine didn’t have that many miles on it . Anyways from what you’re telling me there’s probably not a lot of text message help I could do. And as far as doing the actual work for you and doing it cheaply I’m probably not the guy for that either I am extremely busy . I’m probably backed up over a month at least . I do greatly apologize I wish I could be of more help .

Hey guys, I also liked the video but IF that is a Jeep 3.7 (I guess), why have a picture of a Dodge 4.7 on this video's listing? I know they are SIMILAR but not exactly the same. I have an oil leak some where on my 2005 4.7. Honna replace the oil pan soon but I wanted to identify any other potential spots where Dodge 4.7 have leaks. Good to find out about the timing chain guides and IF I have to remove the timing cover I'll see if it has the oil restrictor plate and get rid of it. Overall..3 out 5 on the video...so thanks!

All I’m gonna say is you are incorrect they are identical with the exception of two extra cylinders. No different than a piece 8 foot wood that you cut 2 feet off of it’s still the same piece of wood.

I just bought a 4.7 egine from accurate engines just about 3 weeks ago an it's making a knocking sound an they want do nothing about it am very disappointed I did everything the paper work said to do that come with the engine but they tell me it's my fault some how cause I didnt buy a new intake but all the papers said was to clean it good or it could have debris come lose an cause problems but if it would have said to put a brand new one on I would have I put all the other new parts that the paper work said they recommended to change an even called them to ask if I could run synthetic oil an they said no so I didnt I used conventional like they said but all I want is my truck to run but accurate won't even answer my call now but not before I got hung up on 3 times I do not reccomend them at all but I do think they need to own up to the warranty on mine the engine literally has not run more than 10 mins probably like 3 mins total an now am out 3500 all together for it to still not run BIG THANKS TO ACCURATE ENGINES yall are a standup company NOT!!!!

Now let’s correct things a little bit “I am not Accurate Engines” I am a KZfaqr who does advertising for them. I can see from being here at accurate that they consistently take care of returns and situations so I don’t know your particular situation but I’ve seen them repair things that were defective many many times. I don’t know if they are the greatest people on the face of the planet. But I’m certain that they’re not the worst. Now you say you bought your engine three weeks ago did you buy your engine because of the Clay way? If so you certainly should have reached out to me. I would’ve ensured that everything was done exactly right because I am extremely critical. And where they are making 30 to 40 engines a week I make one so I take a great deal more time with people who purchased them from my channel With all of that said I would absolutely love to help you and I wish I could but like I also said unfortunately I am separate from them. Please don’t throw me under the same bus as them I make free videos to help people. And I am certainly not them. When you have time please answer to my question

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbaTmLBh25-amoU.html if you or anyone ever get a chance if you could check out this video of my dodge with a 3.7. bought it with a ticking and rebuilt the whole engine hoping to find something wrong inside and could not find it, upon reinstallation the same ticking is still there. More noticable under cab then under the hood. Also gets louder as i let off the gas when accelerating

You’re a lucky boy Harold I can tell you what it is because I’ve bashed my head against the wall to figure it out I just disassembled my engine three times before I figured out that it was the balance shaft on the inside of the engine…. I can’t promise that you’re going to have the same experience that I had but I put 90,000 miles on my engine always ticked the whole time….. before the truck was finally totaled by a deer. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftSjaNqgz5Ozd5s.html

@@sharpcarco lol i have been thinking it could be the balance shaft, cuz its the only thing i didnt mess with when rebuilding the engine, but then i thought how can that cause a tick, i guess loose on the bushing. Thanks for the reply.

I know it’s crazy but it’s the only thing that it could’ve possibly been. It is the weirdest sound it sounds like a lifter but then you take the lifters apart nothing wrong ,you change them no change, check the mains nothing wrong, Timming nothing wrong has to be the balance shaft.

Yep, 3.7 is literally the same block minus 2 cylinders. Same size pistons and everything. They have got to be the worst engines ever built. I absolutely hate them! There was no issue with the 5.2L or the 5.9L, they should have just made the Hemi, and based the 4.7 solely on the 5.2. My 4.7 knocks, ticks, every time, all the time especially when cold. I've seen people put 300,000 miles on original 3.9s, 5.2s, and 5.9s and there isn't a single tick or knock to be heard from those engines. Disappointing.

I’m literally going through the same thing right now. 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7l all time 4 wheel drive. I’ve been told SOOO many different things. Watched literally 6 hours of footage on rebuilding this p.o.s just to be told well maybe it’s your guides. So I looked up “4.7l timing chain guide problems” and tons of videos I had never seen popped up about the tensioners. Not a single soul even had thought about the tensioners nor did I either but I’m not to knowledgeable about this stuff. Now after time and 199,160 miles, there’s also a deep tone knock that’s faint but I’m just so unsure of what the problems had been it drove me nuts. Forever I thought it was seized lifters and cam lobes smacking the rocker but as soon as I heard the sound in this video I knew eveyone I went to was wrong. Stethoscopes don’t work when idiots have no idea what there listening for.

My 4.7 has 431K on it and the only thing that’s happened is a broken exhaust manifold bolt. Maybe actually take care of your 4.7 and you’ll have it take care of you.

I couldn’t agree with you more in most situations but this particular engine the 3.7 and the 4.7 Chrysler they are not good Engines no matter what you do I’m actually glad to hear you say that and most the time I would 100% agree but I’ve seen quite a few of them that were very well taken care of and they still have these problems
