I can still remember my grandfather and father arguing over selling the mules and getting tractors. I was young but it is still in my head. After months going back and forth, we got 2 Ford 8N tractors, but still kept the mules. How we survived for years still surprises me.

My grandfather said to my uncle, who wanted to buy a tractor - you're throwing money away, you won't be able to afford a loaf of bread! They've used oxen though, because they have lots of hills.

Thank you for your straightforward explanations of the various monitors - clear and concise. Most of this "stuff" is mighty new and only recently developed, do you have any lingering concerns about reliability issues in a relatively hostile physical conditions (dust / vibration/ humidity/ temp swings) or that much of it is linked to John Deere rather than independent third party suppliers? Likewise I would have concerns about system repairs and maintenance and updating as it seems that you would likely have to employ manufacturer technicians rather than fix them yourselves which in turn be hideously expensive and you could be waiting ages for their support to attend and fix the breakdown.

Actually I have always been able to make repairs myself with the input of a dealer on the phone. Each module is fairly easy to remove and swap to another row for diagnosing malfunctions. I should make a video about that too!

Well, Carl, you finally did it. You overloaded my brain with an interesting discussion. Do other producers use different technology or less technology to achieve the same result? Is it necessary to have such high technology to remain profitable? I am duly impressed with what agriculture has moved to. Was that your lunch in the colorful bag?
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 3 жыл бұрын
Each piece of technology makes you more consistent at how you are planting. It’s not necessary to have all this stuff but it site does improve profitability if you have enough acres to justify the cost of the equipment to begin with.

Hi Carl. At minute 14:50 during the explanation of the down force map, i’m curious what the black rectangles were? Does it just mean there’s no data available for that section or was there no planting?
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 3 жыл бұрын
That’s where I stopped to dig seed. If you stop and start out again, it takes it just a second to start mapping. There might be a 18” gap in the corn there but it isn’t as bad as it looks on the map. The best way to avoid that is to wait until you get to the RJS to stop and dig. The second best way is to lift up and back up a few feet and set it down and go. Then it will start exactly where it stopped.

Here in the UK, as yet, no but anyone growing field scale vegetables, soft fruit or orchards are being required to by the supermarket buyers. They are forced to do so before being considered as a potential source of produce to enter into their supply lines. However all producers are required by law to collect, record and store comprehensive records of any type of pesticide or fertiliser usage on each and every field and crop. This information must be made available if requested by the authorities such as environmental officers or government scientific staff. It should be noted that the same basic but detailed rules are also applied to any form of livestock producer and grassland farmer.

Excellent explanation! I think I understood most of it. BTW, I realize you were teasing at 0:57 about viewers wearing masks if they were concerned about catching the virus from you. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of people still don't understand how masks work. I don't wear a mask to protect me, I wear a mask to reduce the risk to others of catching a bug from me. Also , getting the vaccine was not to protect myself from getting the virus, my risk factors are low. I got the vaccine to reduce the risk of vulnerable people catching the virus from me. I don't know why there is so much irrational fear about vaccines and using masks. I also can't understand the lack of consideration and disrespect that anti-vaxxers & anti-maskers have for other folks. I just wanted to try to challenge some of the misinformation that's going around. Rant over, resume your planting!

I actually find the diagnostics to be pretty easy. The screen can show you all the voltages and amp draw of each module on each row. Makes it pretty easy to find a bad motor or broken harness wire. It’s also really quick to swap components from one for row to another to see if the office moves or stays. So far I’ve fixed everything myself with the dealer on my headset. 👍
