Does citric acid really white your whites?? Experiment.

In this video I test a myth that citric acid whites your whites. The polo was best case scenario as far as being a test subject so there will be no excuses if it fails.
Instructions: 1 tbs per litre of water (4cups). Soak 6-8 hours. Wash as normal.

Citric acid is not a whitening agent. Its helps remove the hardness and dissolve metals in the water.

That’s correct. Alot of why white yellows is stuff that citric acid can take off, not everything though, but more than people think.. I actually used this a few more times off camera and sometimes it works. Honestly I find bleach useless.. and maybe that’s why. Thanks for watching!

use sodium percarbonate to soak, wash and then in the rinse cycle use citric acid and a bluing agent

I think you used too little citric acid. I've seen a studied (chemical makeup) test using 200g (about 7 ounces) citric acid to 800 g water ( roughly 27 ounces). The higher concentrate will help remove the yellowing. Citric acid has a lot of benefits - it changes your pH which helps clean your clothes and is not caustic in your machine, like vinegar which can cause metal slough off of nickel. It also decreases sludge build up in your plumbing.

Wow.. and there I thought I was excessive.. I use typically 4 or 5 tablespoons to that blue tub of water.. lol.. guess The less there is the harder it is to get cleaned.. the really bad stuff like comes right off.. I do use this time to time and random things it will clean.. others.. it’s a waste of water lol. thanks for the valuable information!

That’s a lot of citric acid it seems like though lol.. but again I guess u don’t use it that often. 200g is almost half a pound lol. Just for 27 oz of water.

I used both lemon juice and citric acid in very hot water with a tad of laundry soap and let my dingy white pillowcases soak for a few hours, followed by rinse and a final soak in hot water and vinegar. Noticeable difference.

Sounds interesting.. my white polo is shot.. I have tried bleach, citric acid.. it’s just yellowed.. I suspect it’s dye from other clothes.. idk if there’s anything that can be done. I will though try that with my purple pillow pillow cover.

@@AverageReviewsYT the makeup of the fabric plays a part in this, too. Have you tried letting the sun bleach out the polo short ?

@@AverageReviewsYT I wanted to add to my comment by mentioning that citric acid and lemon juice can be caustic, and can cause skin burns. Use gloves and caution ⚠️ I did 2 more quality older but dingy pillowcases earlier today using hot water, citric acid, and lemon juice soak. Then rinse and soak again in hot water and vinegar. They’re drying rite now and look great 👍🏻 Thus works but use caution that’s all.
