Does Greta Van Fleet Sound TOO MUCH Like Led Zeppelin?

A lot of people have been recommending that I check out a band called Greta Van Fleet because they sound a whole lot like Led Zeppelin. But at what point does a band start sounding TOO MUCH like another?
Let me know in the comments (not the d-box lol).

I was playing MLB the show 18. Safari song is on there I was like “did they actually put a Zeppelin fine I haven’t heard on here?!” And then I saw it was GVF. It’s definitely pushing up on the line of imitation but I guess if you are going to imitate something and you picked Zep well hats off. I just hope it brings more people back to rock and blues.

Funny thing is, I have a game, I forget which one, that has Safari on it also. I was playing it one day and safari came on and at first, I swear, I thought it was a Zeppelin track. Even though I had the GVF EP, from the fires, I guess I hadn't really listened to Safari that much and I totally thought I was listening to a Zeppelin song. TBH, I was slightly disappointed when I found out it was from GVF and not Zeppelin, but it's whatever. Good music is good music. I support GVF because they have good music.

While I don't think "sounding like Led Zeppelin" should be something that is applauded, I do think that "sounding like Led Zeppelin" does show a lot of potential for growth. Rush's first album sounded a hell of a lot like Zep and when it was first played on the radio some people mistook it for Zep. Greta Van Fleet has a lot of talent and potential, but they need to find their own sound.
@awookieandagerman
@awookieandagerman 6 жыл бұрын
Sean David definitely. But you have to remember Rush s/t hit while LZ was still roughly the biggest band in the world. For GVF to do what Rush did after writing a (great) LZ-esque album might be a lot more difficult in 2017 than in 1974. Also, I'd argue GVF sound a LOT more like LZ than Rush ever did, but that's just me.
@alecl9430

They need to find their own sound yes. But they especially need to find their own sound before they get caught in the trap of the majority of their fans liking them mainly because they sound like Led Zeppelin, then those same people jumping ship once they do something unique (something that doesn't sound 98% like Led Zeppelin).
@BOTFsean

awookieandagerman I agree with both you and Alec. I agree that it might be difficult to develop past this sound, but i wouldn't write them off this early in their career. I personally don't care for them much right now, but I respect their potential and will be looking for growth in the future.

I think it’s pretty silly to want a band that sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin. That doesn’t interest me. If I want to listen to Led Zeppelin, I’ll listen to them. Why would I want to hear an imitation? Can’t stand the comments on their videos. Finally! REAL rock is back! Too ignorant and close minded to notice all the great rock bands releasing music, but someone blatantly ripping off Zeppelin is the “future of rock”. Stupid af.

Seriously, it's been almost 40 years. Zeppelin isn't ever coming back and I'd like to hear more music in that mold. Bring it on. As far as Rival Sons go, they have multiple classic influences. I hear a lot of Free in there, and if you have their early self-released stuff, you can play spot the influence. There is a very blatant Beatles tune, for example. Most of these reverential bands are long gone with no new music ever coming. If someone loves that style and wants to continue in that mold, more power to them.

Here's my take. Greta Van Fleet isn't really for the people who were teens and twenties when Led Zeppelin was popular. They are just starting out, learning the music, and learning how they play. They have their own music. It's original lyrics and melodies. Yes they sound like the hard rock groups, especially Led Zeppelin, from the 70s, but what do you expect from a hard rock band that plays that style of music. Every band needs a place to start, and Greta Van Fleet started strong. I am confident that in the future, not only will they improve, but find their own sound.

I like this band and I like how they do sound somewhat like Led Zeppelin. The thing I don't like is that in an interview they tried to say they never listened or played LZep covers until 2 yrs or whatever into playing in public. You don't just happen to sound like LZep like that sorry. No need to lie about it. Own it.

CherokeeRedman27 I'm sure at first they did BUT at a certain point I'm sure they got tired of hearing the same thing.... now they are distancing themselves. NoiseFeedMusic dude. Chill. They ARE really young and they DO have a lot of growth and development. Give them a chance. Culture back then produced younger superstars. So what, it’s 2018, things are different. You can’t expect them to sound super original in 2018. They grew up listening to the sane music and tapes that zeppelin were influenced by. But they will find their sounds. And your opinion is meaningless b/c you aren’t any better, and Robert Plant gave them props.

I really enjoyed listening to Greta Van Fleet, however I do think that they sound too much like Led Zeppelin though. I think that if they were a band in any other decade, there would be backlash for sounding too much like them. However, since it's 2017 and rock music is virtually nonexistant, Greta Van Fleet seems like a breath of fresh air, at least for me. Especially since they sound so different then any other rock music that's been released this year. I do hope they develop their sound in the future to make it more of their own. They're obviously talented and quite young, so I don't think that that's to far out of the realms of possibility. I'm excited to see what they'll do next.

There was a few “knock offs” in the late 80’s early 90’s of Zepplin sounding bands .. “Kingdom Come” was one .. I remember we used to call them Kingdom “Clone” lol. I had the same thought about GVF. I let my imagination start to wander wondering if some of these tunes weren’t “shelved” by Plant and Page only to have them resurrected by someone who would carry or rekindle the torch. Suffice to say GVF are the right band at the right time as this genre has virtually been MIA for at least 15 years.

Jordan: Robert Plant was directly influenced by Janis Joplin and Steve Marriot of the band Humble Pie. Listen to those two artists before you argue that Zeppelin created an entirely new sound. It really isn't true. Sure they did many original things, but their sound was far from entirely new. Jimmy Page's guitar stylings had MANY predecessors. Again, far from original. What Zep had was an incredibly solid lineup of four world class musicians. Greta is not there yet, but they are very young. They picked a great band to pattern themselves after. They will grow and become something new in time. They are being noticed because of all of the controversy around their sound. Their first full album will tell us a great deal about what this band can really do.

The combination of John Bonham's drumming with Jimmy Pages riffs, John Paul Jones creative basslines, and Robert Plants vocals WAS a unique sound that pushed music forward and laid the groundwork for heavy metal, I don't get what you're going for because Plant was just 1/4 of their sound and he wasn't the innovative part he was just crucial to their image and had the voice to make their music reach a massive audience, again John Bonham IMO is the singular most important member (if not equal to Jimmy Page) as to why their music is so innovative and groundbreaking and still difficult to successfully imitate or innovate on.

They do care they just know how reactive the public is to shit like that so they don't really say anything about it in an obvious manner. But if you understand actual body language and mannerisms of the time you will see that they just see these little kids as hybrid sheep trying to reach out. In reality GVF is just a novelty band. Most people don't understand rock culture and LZ is a mainstream legend. So it makes sense a shit load of people chasing nostalgia are gonna kiss GVF ass because they crave 'that old sound'. But naturally not enough people actually understand the concept of originality and ART. LZ music videos for example are filled with symbolism and ART showing the inner working of their music. GVF is literally a cookie cutter attempt. It's cute and I'm sure they are good guys but yeah... just my opinion of course. 💜

I feel like if someone was imitating an active artist like, say, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I would not like them as much and that would cross a border for me, but since Zeppelin is done, this is almost like new Led Zeppelin music and it's cool to hear something new. I'm really interested to see how Zeppelin will react to Greta Van Fleet, though, because I'm sure they will hear about them if they haven't already.
@Lofti
@Lofti 6 жыл бұрын
I enjoy Greta Van Fleet, it's fun to hear them play music somewhat similar to my favorite band Led Zeppelin (the singer is 110% trying his best to be literally Robert Plant, it's not even subtle, but it's fun). But that's just it, they're "fun", they won't go down in history at all, they're just one tier above a cover band basically. When people compare them to Zeppelin that's cool and all, but where people cross the line is when they try to put GVF actually up there with Zeppelin. Sorry GVF, but you will NEVER come close to what Zeppelin did, the stuff Zeppelin composed was so drastically better in every way what GVF is doing. GVF is basically the dollar store off brand version of Zeppelin that just attempted to copy the ingredients of Zeppelin but only got a small fraction of it down. The only person in the band that came somewhat close to a Zeppelin member is the singer, but even then he still doesn't have the soul of Plant (also when you flat out copy something you're immediately significantly less respected than the original, because copying isn't hard, creating is) But again, I enjoy GVF still because a dollar store off brand of arguably one of the best rock bands ever to exist is still a pretty good band, just stay in your lane and don't try to actually compare yourself to Zeppelin.

Alejandro Ramirez yeah, there's no way he just started doing that, you can tell he is going after the specific sound of Plant, there's a bunch of subtle nuances that totally give it away. Also the sound that they're going for in general is so obviously an homage to Zeppelin, this is no coincidence.
@alejandroramirez4470

I said "they claim." Anyhow, to sound like another person is such a rare thing. I could learn to sing but no way will I ever get the sound plant or someone like axel rose. You'd have to come to it naturally. I know the songs are too similar but I think if you look in any genre you'd find many artists with too much similarities.
@Lofti
@Lofti 6 жыл бұрын
You can train impersonations in singing just like you can with voice acting, look up any Elvis impersonator for a quick example. If you're able to sing already and control your voice in a similar way voice actors do then impersonating another singer isn't too difficult, just as long as your natural voice already somewhere in the ballpark of what you're impersonating (like a woman will have issues trying to do an Elvis impersonation, to stick with that example)

Zeppelin's originality is what made them the "biggest band of the 70's". All of these revivalist rock bands seem to forget that. Zeppelin were heavily influenced by blues artists for example, but did that mean they played songs sounding identical to that era and dress up like those artists? Did Jimmy Page play on a big-ass jazz box guitar because John Lee Hooker did so? No, and if they did they sure as hell wouldn't have been relatable to the baby boomer generation and would most likely have been shrugged off as a novelty act.

Exactly right. I can't imagine putting on Zeppelin 1 back in 1969 and hearing Good Times Bad Times for the first time. Nothing sounded like that before that. They weren't being nostalgic. They were pushing the art forward. If these new bands took that attitude as a model for their band, instead of the actual sound, music would be in a great place right now.

Great point! Josh Homme said in some interview that bands should fall in love with the IDEA of a band instead of the example they provide. Like almost all the hard rock bands from the 80s and grunge bands from the 90s love Led Zeppelin, and were heavily inspired by them but at the same time pushed rock music forward. So what Greta Van Fleet's excuse for not doing their own thing?
@michaelfadian
@michaelfadian 6 жыл бұрын
DarkJedi246 That's a great point you make, especially the grunge bands. I really think the early 90's was the last time that popular rock music was good and relevant. That first wave of Seattle bands got it. They took their influences and used them to shape something new. Of course, there are exceptions, but that seems like a lost art today. Josh Homme is one of the guys that gets it.

DarkJedi246 the early critics of Zeppelin did shrug them off. The fans kept them alive. It’s amazing how we have a hard time accepting something new. In the case of Greta Van Fleet. They stole their name from a news Anchor. They stole their sound also. 2 years from now they won’t even be on our Radar.

DarkJedi246 I think they are lazy. Why would anyone want to hear a band that sounds just like. The great ones have a distinct sound. Springsteen, Cash,Dylan,The Doors,Willie Nelson,The Stones The Beatles. You will always hear voices or bands that sound like someone. I would want to be the one somebody is trying to sound like. Everyone has influences. That don’t mean they try to conquer their sound. Jimmy Page loved Elvis. Said he was a huge influence. Big difference between Elvis and Led Zeppelin.

Hey man, thanks for taking the time. I think their first EP (the one with Highway Tune) on it was much more evocative than their new EP. "Talk on the Street" which I'm listening to right now is a much more straight out rocker than "Flower Power" which is off the charts "Zeppy" (I made that word up). I give these kids a lot of credit. I've seen them play live twice and spoken to the drummer Daniel Wagner for some time. They're kids. Give them some time to find their sound. It's a nice thought exercise you've done but if anything I view the first EP as an homage, not a ripoff.

@Stefano Padilla _"Never heard of these guys"_ Well if you've never heard these guys then you don't appreciate what's being talked about. It's not that they try to sound like Led Zep, rather than they are exactly mimicking every aspect of it. I think that's why it makes this case a little different than merely one band trying to sound like another. It's a far more extreme case here than normally.

Folks, you need to remember that LZ's first album was released in 1969. Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee were still in middle school, and were absolutely influenced by LZ. You can't blame Rush for trying to emulate them in 1973. It's not how you start, but how you finish. Considering how Rush started, how they progressed is a remarkable testament to their talent and dedication. "The sincerest form of flattery is imitation." As GVF ages, they'll develop their own unique sound. Once upon a time, Interpol was hailed as the second coming of Ian Curtis & Joy Division. Eventually Interpol got sick of being asked about the JD influence, and their music evolved.

@RBRSC 6 жыл бұрын
LZ started out prettymuch with a lot of flat copycat stuff themselves as that went. GvF could certainly evolve (they're certainly younger then Airbourne, who were a similar case with AC/DC), I'll give them that, and I give a bit of respect to someone making their own stuff regardless of my taste for it (as opposed to the singer paid thousands of dollars to halfass a song written by a 20 person committee somewhere). Right now they are kind of a novelty act. Like "Look at the teenage kids playing these songs from their dads (granddads?) old record collection. Something that'd fit in on talent show meme videos. Certainly not bad (as per Anthony's own point that theres no reason you'd dislike the copy of something you liked) but not some groundbreaking best in the world stuff.

Deja Vu!!! We were through this already 30 years ago when a bunch of bands came out with a highly Zeppelinesque sound, most notoriously Kingdom Come (see Get it On or What Love Can Be from their 1988 debut), and got a hammering in the magazines (no social media then). Gary Moore even wrote a song about these bands in '89 called Led Clones.

Brett Capra it's okay to be influenced by a band, but I don't think GVF is "influenced", they have literally taken led Zeppelin songs and imitated them. I have no problem with someone being a fan and having a definite influence, but I don't think a "fan" would go to the extreme GVF does. I think once you cross a certain line, as they have, you may as well just be a cover band because they're not really writing songs.

I feel like the band only has three songs (highway tune, flower power, safari song) that really scream Zeppelin to me. Those were all on their introductory album which I believe was smart because it got people talking about them. The last song on that album was black smoke rising which felt out of place on that album to me. Once they released their double Ep I realized why they included it. It was a taste of what else they could do which they expanded on in the new songs introduced in from the fires. They definitely have their own (albeit still retro sound). I think that associating themselves with one of the greatest bands of all time before carving out their own sound was an intentional and very smart marketing plan.

Emerson argued, everything is original-pastiche is by definition "an original copy." What makes what Zeppelin did original was how they adapted old sounds and created a universe out of them. What GFV is doing is pastiche; they're not adapting anything into a new context; they're just copying. Pastiche is a mold that reeks of monotony and creative bankruptcy. Frankly, these kids should be embarrassed by their Wal-Mart Hippie, PR-hyped brand of inauthenticity. To quote Emerson: "Envy is ignorance...imitation is suicide."

I'd agree GVF are way overstepping the boundary, and the fact that their songs, drums, and bass aren't as good either only adds to what I don't like about them. They're entire point is to give off Led Zep vibes, but nothing more than that. This band is uncanny, and that's not a good thing. If they write a Stairway To Heaven tier song, that's when I'll take interest, but till then, they've submitted themselves to living in the shadow of their idols. "Don't follow in your heroes footsteps; seek what they sought."

In an age of overproduced “auto-tune” reliant pop singers and sound alike country artists that can only write lyrics pertaining to three topics: beer, their pickup trucks and some girl’s ass, Greta Van Fleet is a breath of fresh air. They’re still young, so their songwriting will evolve and so will their sound. When I first heard Karnivool I remember thinking that they sounded a lot like Tool but I'd never write them off as mere copycats. With Greta Van Fleet, all I hear is a band trying as hard as possible to sound like Zeppelin (particularly the blues-rock of their first two records). I have to give it to the lead singer, he does a hell of a Plant impression, but I'm not particularly impressed by what I've heard so far. All that said, they're pretty young, so it's possible their sound will develop into something less derivative.

A song is as good as the sum of its parts. The biggest problem with GVF is that as much as they try to sound like Led Zeppelin, they are not Led Zeppelin. The voice is almost identical to Plant's and the riffs sound like something Page would've written but at the end of the day the guitar player can't play like Page, or the bassist like Jones, or the drummer like Bonham. Plus those four had amazing chemistry together. You cannot replicate that.

Bands usually have their sound by that age, and with the success it's brought them I can't imagine they would stop doing what brought them attention, they already are getting away with stealing a bands sound so they will likely just keep doing the same but maybe they'll make it less obvious and stop using the exact same production/sound as the old zeppelin records because it's pretty fucking irritating to hear them and know they try to dodge the LZ comparison / influence as if owning up to it will instantly make them lose their fans.

i think the "being as good as" part is the really important part. what annoys me is that no one feels this way about punk or rap. no one's like, oh man this sounds EXACTLY like the ramones. you think "oh this is punk music." but when a band is really singular, bands being deeply influenced by them get shit on. swans, coil, i dunno, the cure? they're so singular, that they didn't start subgenres. but as a fan, i really wish there were 5 - 10 more bands as talented and amazing as those bands. but the issue is, it's DIFFICULT! punk is easy, hip hop is certain forms, is easy to mimic. but singularly inventive bands are hard to mimic. but i don't think we should call it "off brand", or shit on it for sounding too much like another band, we should judge it by how good it is. does it take the incredible achievements of those bands and build on them, or does it fall short of even the foundation? the influence shouldn't be the criticism, the execution should be.

And the execution falls on its face for sounding completely devoid of the detail and power of the original, this band is he definition of offbrand, where others would be undeservedly labeled this fits textbook.

Not only that but i seriously think its way too early to tell. Like, fuck, one of the members just turned 19. I personally cant properly judge them yet as a band because I *see* the potential and I *hear* the skill these actual kids have. I need more material and more growth to actually know who this small band is. In the mean time, I plan to stick around because on its own, for kids this young to play like this, it is skill and it is impressive. I'm looking to the future.

Santiago the youngest person is the drummer. You could give him 30 more years and he wouldnt be John Bonham. Zeppelin was influenced by blue artists and covered their songs but did not try to emulate their style and dress the way these guys have.

Wesley Buirkle its quite deceptive saying they're thieves when they were equally among the most unique music groups at the time. They may have taken bits and pieces (common at the time), but what they did with it was create a sound that hadn't been heard

Shotgun Arms Because the fanbase likes their music. Just because you have a different opinion doesn’t mean the fanbase is wrong for wanting to see their favorite band get better and get more popular. I 100% guarantee that every single member in GVF is more creative and more talented than you. Yeah, they sound like Zeppelin. Who the hell cares? It sounds good. It’s new content. Let them do their own thing and pave their own path. The only thing that deters bands like GVF are mindless elitist haters who don’t want to see past their small little bubble. Give them a chance. Let them find their sound. Stop being a fucking cunt.

Their LZ-like sound brought me to Greta. I'm so happy that they're here. And Zepp is my fav band ever. I hope they keep going and doing that kind of music. The vocalist seems really to be Plant's lost child. I'm happy to witness their progress.

As much as I really like Greta's current sound, being a big Zeppelin fan; I'm very interested on where they will go from here and how they will mature as musicians, as well as what new elements can they bring to the hard rock/ blues sound. A sound that may benefit from sort-of a rebirth. There potential is what really intrigues me.

The thing about a band just taking the sound of another band and imitating it wholesale (besides being kinda gross and disrespectful) is that there's going to be a lack of depth to it. Led Zeppelin's sound is a representation of the styles of its members and their personalities. They created that sound. If a band comes around and tries to sound exactly like LZ, that can't actually be an authentic representation of who they are. Somebody imitating someone else, even if they do it convincingly, is just never going to have any kind of impact like a band trying to sound like themselves.

I personally don't hear Led Zeppelin I remember the first song I heard of theirs what Highway tune summer of 17 and I was hooked! My personal opinion is I think they're actually one of the few only good bands on the radio right now who are all original (non cover band) who have true Talent they're going to be big!

I hate when a band creates music that’s this similar to that of another band’s work. It’s good when you can hear a band’s influences in their music, but they have to take those influences and create something unique out of them. That’s how music progresses. When you completely copy a band’s sound, you get nothing new and nothing inspirational. If I wanted to listen to music that sounded like Led Zeppelin, I’d listen to Led Zeppelin.

The album is alright but saying that they brought back Rock is insane. Iron Maiden never stopped playing since 1981nor did Priest. It's like saying Mitch Murder brought back the 80's. They will grow and find their own style. The guitar player needs to study music and learn some chops!!

I am just glad there are finally new bands out there who get it! BUT if you are wondering where each of these bands are falling shy of the ZEP mark, it's the fact that Page and Bonzo worked together like math. Heartbreaker, Wanton Song, When the Levee Breaks...great examples of how Bonzo worked with Page solidly and even kep wierd time signitures in with Page at 4/4 time, bla bla. They just ARENt them, but here's hope they evolve into something new and BETTER even...Zep started off young and "borrowing" things, too :)
