Wilder can't box. He basically is learning how to box. Wilder is a fighter. He doesn't have to footwork or technique to beat Mike Tyson. Watch a prime Mike Tyson foot and head work. Wilder wouldn't be able to effectively land anything. Look at Wilder's last fight vs. Fury. Fury has far superior head movement and Wilder couldn't land anything. Against a shorter Tyson Wilder would leave himself wide open and he'd crush Wilder.

how? he struggled against tall guys with a jab, and the 'tall' guys he struggled against would be average size in this era. how is tyson going to reach tyson fury who's a full foot taller than him?
@tonyb97355 жыл бұрын
Tyson is extremely underrated as a *boxer*, he had great head movement and in his prime was extremely adept at slipping the jab. He had no problem with taller guys, he was able to slip the jab, step in, and unload massive uppercuts that came from his boots. After Cus died Tyson went downhill rapidly and particularly after he came out of prison. He retained most of his hand speed and power but his movement was never the same again. From then onwards yes he struggled to get past the big guys, by the time he fought, say Lewis, he was a shadow of his best self. Against Lewis he was so slow he looked like he was on mogadon.
@SI-cd7xs5 жыл бұрын
tyson never fought any elite fighters until he fell off, tired of hearing about what he could've done. head movement or not he's not out boxing lennox lewis or holyfield. period

What nonsense, Before losing to Buster Douglas Tyson fought and beat the following guys; Alfonso Ratliff held the Lineal and WBC cruiserweight titles, Trevor Berbick won the WBC heavyweight title in 1986 James "Bonecrusher" Smith held the WBA heavyweight title from 1986 to 1987 Pinklon Thomas held the WBC heavyweight title from 1984 to 1986 Tony Craig Tucker won the IBF heavyweight title in 1987 Tyrell Biggs won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and gold at the 1982 World Championships both in the super heavyweight division. That's 6 world champions and an Olympic gold medallist. I don't know what your definition of elite is. As to whether he could have out-boxed Holyfield or Lewis; the truth is we'll never know. What I do know is that he is very underrated as a boxer and, at his best, I believe that he stood every chance of beating them.

When you look at Tyson from 85-90, he was so fast, explosive (throwing 6-7 punch combinations), his head movement was impeccable. When you compare this Tyson with Tyson later when he fought Lennox and Holyfield, he wasn’t the same. He was slower, less explosive, & didn’t utilize his famous Peak-a-boo stance as much. Just go and compare the fights.

Agree 110%. It didnt take long for the Don King influence to start showing up. Tyson was still doing a lot of that later in his career. But it was a lot less.
@dingfeldersmurfalot45605 жыл бұрын
A lot like Ali lost his mobility and came back from prison a different, older athlete. And like Elementalism says, Tyson was never as disciplined under Don King. Both athletes went through serious decline not all that long into their careers, and it forever tarnished the image and abilities of incredible athletes who were superb in their primes.

And you also forgets that when he faced Holyfield Holy was also way out of prime,he was clearly slower and had been through wars with Bowe and struggled with Czys. Tyson was world champ and been knocking out the same guys he did before jail and he was 25 to 1 with good reasons,Tysons camp saw Holy as washed up,thats why they signed the fight,,dont forget that. IF they met earlier it would have been another match,who knows?, but in the way Holyfield took what Tyson had and demolished him it tells me that Holyfield had beaten him anytime they met,he was just to good for him.

Iron Mike Tyson was well on his way to becoming the Best Heavyweight of All Times until Cus D’Amato died and after Tyson fired Kevin Rooney. The only man that could beat Mike Tyson was Mike Tyson, and he did! Tyson “Imploded” and fell apart thanks to Don King, Robin Givens and her mom to name a few.

BL4CK KN1G8T Tyson easily destroyed all men put in front of him until he imploded! When he lost to Douglas, Tyson didn’t train for three weeks. He partied in Japan in lieu of training and still almost took out a Highly MotivatedBuster Douglas with one punch. In Tyson’s prime he was the man!

MrTom423 Still never beat a great fighter in his prime. He ducked the Holyfield fight to fight Douglas. Don King cherry picked him for some easy money. He could have fought Holyfield before he went to jail, but chose not to. Mentally weak bully, and crumbled against every top fighter he faced. He hit Holyfield with his best shots, and he was hitting harder then, and didn't deter him

Dude, I love this video so much. I've been revisiting it for years now. Theres something about that section where he's talking about Archie Moore using the philly shell cross guard and shoulder roll defense, that line where he says "It makes you wonder where these guys learned to fight like that in the first place". For some reason that line stuck with me and it made me realize just how much more evolution there is to be had in fighting. Something about the idea of an average joe who just happens to get in enough scraps to develop his own unique styles and techniques that other people would never even think of, it just gets me fired up. I fucking love combat sports.

Also I do think that many of those legends, had they started in today's era, would probably do really well and maybe be the best in today's era. Same for other sports. However as time progresses, a better understanding of the sport becomes mainstream as well as an increase in popularity. This means stronger competition, not just in terms of of practiced skill and knowledge, but genetics such as size. Take the sprinting comparison. If he were within one stride of Bolt, some of that difference could be attributed to genetics and knowledge. Maybe the genetics would actually be on Owens' side assuming things like PEDs were kept constant. But that little stride is the 1% that it takes to beat someone else, and in boxing, the level of complexity in skills is probably makes that difference between generations far greater.

I agree with the sentiment of this video. Old vs. New arguments are fine so long as they go into specifics about fighter A vs. fighter B. The "old school boxers were just tougher" brigade and the "with modern nutrition and training blah blah blah" types are as bad as each other. Each individual fighter's greatness belongs more to themselves and their own talents than to simply what year they were born.
@Geist4526 жыл бұрын
but the argument does go both ways; how much are they gaining in nutrition, which usually comes down to personal discipline for neutral weights. vs how much of a competitive pool are they facing, which is very era oriented. for boxing effective muscle mass is only a concept that really plays into jumping weights and subtle configurations for specific match ups. The "pocket" heavy weight, has forever been considered to have the most dangerous cross section of power, speed and movement. As much as we would like to think that 30 years of human evolution has changed us, its just not feasible. What is feasible, is that you can get more people into that "pocket" weight with knowledge of "effective muscle". which has played a more significant role in football and power lifting, because of a very different set of mechanics involving mass.

In fact many champions over the last 20 years have made careers out of dodging other fighters, Ali, Leonard, Robinson,Tyson fought everyone and as such there overall skill level was far superior, the current heavyweight division could get to that level again over the next 10 years but only if the top guys actualły fight each other
