Gavaskar is way too modest IMO. An average of 65, with 13 centuries and 3 double centuries against the mighty West Indies in their prime while all the other batsmen could barely manage an average of 30. And all this without wearing a helmet!

Tendulkar perfectly explained batsmanship : Try to hit the ball and find a boundary. If you face a better ball , punch it and get runs . If the face a better ball , rotate the strike . If you face a really really good bowl , block it or let it go ! Simple and elegant while being brutally efficient - Sachin Tendulkar , the most complete batsman to grace the game .

For a kid born in 80's & only followed the game since late 80's, I could simply say that Sachin was not just a cricketer, Sachin was a household name in every home.. as if he was one our own.. When I was in school, there was not a single day when someone didn't tell me "Look at that guy 'Sachin Tendulkar', he is only 8 years elder to you.." and I used to feel why this guy had to do such extraordinary things when I'm growing up.. But trust me, when Sachin used to get out every heart in our family used to break including mine... Lots of love 💓 Sachin.. God, bring back the 90's..

I think the greatest learning from Tendulkar is not about his batting exploits. One could always rightfully argue about a Ponting/Smith/Lara/Kallis/Dravid/Bradman etc for being better or having a greater impact. What startles me is how he carried himself with every bit of money power and fame that came his way. He is like A Federer. There may be a djokovic but federer is really reverred. Sachin transcends cricket. He was literally treated God and yet he remains grounded. He didn't let it get in his hand. And that's the learning which a Sachin can give to even a CEO of a top MNC. That to me is his biggest legacy. Keep the feet grounded.

Similar fir Michel Jordon in basketball. There will be better player than them but the way they carried themselves in and out of the field and remained composed through all ups and downs and remain humble while at the pinnacle of respective game and at a times there was no one close to them still they were respective to the game never saw themselves bigger than it although at a times they were more popular and draw fir sports itself, tells their greatness.

If I had to choose 3 greatest batsmen of the all time, I would go with 1. Viv Richards, 2. Sachin Tendulkar, 3. Ricky Ponting. These 3 batsmen have not choked if you check their separate wc final/sf/qf stats. Other batsmen have choked somewhere, i.e. Kohli choked on ODI tournaments finals with avg of 26, AB choked on T20I SFs with 5.50 avg and 85 SR, Sanga choked on T20I SFs with 9 avg and 92 SR.

What makes Gavaskar great is the fact that he has a lot of humility. He feels no embarrassment in acknowledging that he is second best. We are talking about a guy who was first to reach 10000 runs, 34 centuries. When bowlers were not controlled with pro-batsmen rules. See, old timers always will select Gavaskar as that man did. But he named Sachin. Great guy.

For those who don't know Nasser's dad was from India and a cricket coach in Ilford, Essex. Raza Jawad 'Joe' Hussain ran Ilford cricket school and was a tough trainer but always fair. My fondest memory is Joe thinking I was good enough to try out for the Ilford team, even though I rarely got to play in my school team. Ilford were the best side in the local area because they were full of cricket mad Indian and Pakistani kids. I didn't mind waking up on Saturday morning and do 2h of nets with him. Nasser's mum was my primary school teacher and she was lovely. I'm not surprised Nasser was such a good cricketer with Joe behind him. I occasionally saw Nasser on Saturday morning in the nets with his dad.

Darshan Kadaiah absolutely. Karnataka has produced a lot of great players over the years. If we look at the history of Indian cricket, most of the players have come from 3 places - Maharashtra (specifically Mumbai), Karnataka (mostly Bangalore) and Delhi. Other parts have of course produced players but these 3 states/cities have produced an assembly line of them. Only in past 15 years is this changing now.

Mumbai certainly produces batsmen who play for the eyes, that is to say elegant, beautiful and technically sound stroke plays. Rohit and Rahane are taking the mantle forward. Gavaskar was an opening batsman in the days of test cricket. He had to fight a lone battle at times, and he had to stay at the wicket first, against pace attack. He was defensive, yes, but his cricket had a unique style. He was cool, composed, determined, patient, focused, and enduring. He is a man of test cricket. Scoring a century and a double century in the 1st and 2nd innings was no mean trick. Individual abilities differ. It should. That's the uniqueness. But, like history is ripe with warriors and empires that last only for some time, so are games. The mind energy acts through different eras and ages and decades through different players. That is all. What matters is that weather, we love to learn, watch, and enjoy their plays.

To be honest there’s no comparison of sachin with anyone… playing for the nation for almost 25 years with the Same passion, hunger and humility on and off the field is the biggest achievement in itself… I am from Sachin’s era and I feel truly lucky that I witnessed all his 24 years of cricket not missing a single match in which he played… people like me don’t appreciate sachin but we idolise him because our childhood, teenage and youth are all filled with memories from sachin… people compare him with Sunil gavaskar sir or maybe kohli but he was and will be the most perfect batsman cricket will ever see…. Period!!!❤❤❤

If we talk about technique and attitude sachin was the best He respected his game very much but if we talk aboult talent there is no cricketer better than Brian Lara and sir viv richard. At the time of Sir viv no bowler used to bowl him a bouncer while he didn't wear any helmet at all in his career. But sachin was so successful because of his attitude towards the game

Players like Gautam Gambhir, Virendar Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Suresh Raina etc are all from that part. Something on them which sets them apart

It is very tough to compare players across generations. I do disagree with the notion that Sachin played in a side with great batsmen. Post 2001 he did, but half of his career was in the 90's when he was largely the lone wolf, especially in overseas conditions. Also, if Gavaskar faced off brilliantly against the mighty WI, Sachin had a fantastic record against the Australians. I think it boils down to Sachin having a more all round game for different formats. Which is again not a fair comparison because Gavaskar grew up in an era where ODI cricket did not exist.

Don't like Gavaskar's commentary but he just downplayed his greatness here when compared and gave credit to Sachin, Azharuddin, Kohli for hitting the good ball to the boundary. Class act. @@venkatakrishnan9102 Sachin has a higher SR than lara in odis just because he batted as a opener in his career. All the openers tend to have a high strike rate cause they bat in the powerplay. It's easier to bat as a opener in odis than a middle/low order unlike tests. It's a very dumb question. Compare the strike rate in tests cause both batted in similar position. Lara has much better rate even though he was in a weaker team and had more pressure unlike Sachin who had many great batsmen to help who saved the team.
