Prevagen is a popular (and expensive!) supplement claimed to improve memory. Is there enough evidence to support this claim or is Prevagen a scam? In this video, double board certified neurologist Neurogal MD evaluates the evidence.
Timeline:
00:00 - Introduction
01:03 - Active Ingredient in Prevagen: Apoaequorin
03:41 - Is there evidence that Prevagen improves memory in humans?
06:51 - Is Prevagen safe?
07:07 - My final conclusions about Prevagen: Scam or worth the cost?

Thank you for this analysis. I have significant brain damage and am always looking for something to improve my short-term memory. (I can't remember my address or phone number -- both new since my brain injury 3 years ago -- so I'm keen on finding any relief!) But my own research into Prevagen led me to the same conclusion you have. Exercise, playing a musical instrument, good sleep, reading daily, all kinds of puzzles (crossword, jigsaw, brain teasers, etc.), coloring/painting/doodling, meditating, visualization of healthy neurons... a lot of things help me, but I've given Prevagen a pass. Good to hear I'm probably not missing anything!

Hi, can I ask you how you feel today in terms of memory? If it has improved, could you tell me what kind of things you have done or taken that you have noticed improvement? I ask you please from the bottom of my heart, a very dear one of mine is having problems with it.

@@anm0r I have made a ton of progress on improving my short term memory AND creating systems to make up for memory deficits. I'm compiling a list for you -- it may take a another day because I'm pulling 3 years of notes and journal entries together. But hopefully there will be something that will help. FIRST I would suggest getting a physical or talking to their doctor. I had a brain tumor; there are tons of physical problems that can effect memory and cognition, and many of them are very treatable. If you know what the issue is, then the tips I'm going to send, including a few book references, may be helpful. Love to you!

@@JulieAiken Hello, thank you very much for your reply!!!! :'D Currently, we have not been able to go to a specialized doctor, only to a general one, this person I am talking about at the moment I feel that she is very stressed, besides that for a few years now I feel that she has not been sleeping perfectly well. I am almost sure it is because of that lifestyle of stress + not sleeping well :( but the hours of sleep are because her day ends at about 12 a.m. and she has to wake up at 7, but sometimes it is at 5, sometimes at 6, or sometimes she does not sleep at all. Sorry for the inconvenience, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart and have a nice day!

Thank you so much for this report about this supplement. My mom takes it. I was about to purchase it but I decided to search for feedback and analysis. Before my diagnosis of a brain tumor and it’s removal, I’ve had bad memory for a decades, but not knowing the cause. But since the surgery, my memory has improved, but it is still bad.. I’m going to get a memory test to get confirmation and a baseline test. My neurologist also recommended CBD treatment for pain because the current prescriptions are questionable but little results. I eat healthy. I can definitely improve my sleep and increase my exercise. I daily walk and sun. I’m learning Spanish and doing brain and fun games to. I’m seeing improvements but I’m retaining some of what I’ve learned and need trigger to remembers the other half. My mom 20 years older than me have better memory.

Thanks for this educational video, Neurogal MD. Your organized and easy-to-understand presentation should help many sort through the chaff and navigate more safely through the fog of the hugely profitable supplement industry. I liked the way that you marched through the study, pointed out the "strengths" and limitations, offered and explained your conclusions, and, importantly, gave your recommendations for healthy and more economical options - eat better, good rest, and exercise. Another winner, Neurogal MD. Thanks.

I've been taking prevagen for over a month now, and i am feeling like it is gradually clearing away blockages in my memory and access to my brain, and concentration. I will be very happy if i see substancial change by another month or two. If so, then it is cheap! (No, i don't have enough money for daily life, but if i feel my brain is healed, it's worth owing money for, to be worried about later).

That was a remarkably detailed and concise analysis of the available facts... I had been wondering if there was any real positive effect with Prevagen or not... I'm not in the medical profession but I do have quite a bit of background in science and testing... I had noticed that, in one or two interviews, when asked if they had study results, the answer always seemed to be something that was equivalent to "we have lots of positive anecdotal evidence". That's not to say that it doesn't have actual benefits of the sort that only a small percentage of people see them. However... when you mentioned your red flag about their narrow choice of the particular metric they chose... one thing came to my mind... To me it sure looks like they cherry picked that result from a long list of results that were statistically null. (It would be somewhat interesting to know if there were any equally narrow negative correlations they neglected to mention.) Anyway... awesome video...

I’d noticed my husband having issues so I bought him a bottle of prevegin. It was quite expensive so I didn’t buy the more expensive version. And I asked him to please at least take the bottle. I noticed an improvement in him and I think he did too. He finished the bottle about a month ago and this morning he did something kind of odd. So I am going to buy another bottle for him. I was wondering if there is anything less expensive I might be able to buy for him or feed him that would have the same effect

Try Magtein (Generic name is Magnesium L-Threonate. About $25 for a 4-6 wk supply. There is a lot of positive clinical study info on it, so I suggest you look it up yourself). I first tried it out years ago as I was already taking a daily magnesium supplement due to chronic migraines. I'd read that Magtein was a "special" form of magnesium that crossed the brain barrier, unlike other magnesium. Long story short, after only two days, I suddenly felt more alert, clear-thinking. That was 7 years ago. Today my Dad is 90, sharper than ever mentally, and we both still take Magtein as part of our daily regimen. The recommended dosage is 3 capsules a day, but I recommend just taking two (one in the morning, and the other just before bedtime) at least in the beginning. BTW, two of my friends have replaced melatonin with magtein as a sleep aid -- that is the other major benefit. But hey, don't take my word on all of this. Buy a bottle and have two or three people in your family try it for just a week (At its core it's just a magnesium supplement, so most people can take it without any noticeable side effects). I'll be very surprised if they don't see some dramatic, positive effect!

Thankful for this bit of information! Two important facts I’m picking up on thats stated here.The main ingredient is created in a lab and is genetically modified. 🚩 Then our bodies process of digestion limits what we can ABSORB. The key here is oxygenation of our cells which we enhance with daily movement to get the heart pumping! Also working on cleaner eating and detoxification of our body from all the chemicals in the environment. If our drainage pathways get cleared the body can do its job. 🫶🏼 Heathy Fats namely DHA 1000 mg is what helps me. Just sayin. 😊

Prevagen funding their own study isn't much different that fda's yearly funding being 65%+ from pharma companies, just in user fees alone. They seem to market euas and create novel accelerated approval processes rather than actually doing their job to serve as a safety check.

For those who are worried about the safety profile of the current Alzheimer's drugs there is a drug about to finish a large P3 study later this year that has had outstanding safety results and in P2 trials showed 47% of patients increased cognitive function, with a additional 23% of Alzheimer's patients stabilized over 12 months. This drug is being tested by Cassava Sciences and has not just one, but two large P3 trials with over 1900 patients. Both trials will be completed by the middle of 2025.

Excellent clarification of in-vivo, in-vitro for casual watchers. This is why the LipidNanoParticle encasing the CV shot worries me. They use a platform approach assuming it stays localized, but LNPs were originally created to bypass otherwise impermiable layers like the BBB and notably found throughout the body after 6 months. Idk how that platform is then possible.
@456MrPeople
@456MrPeople Жыл бұрын
You're right but mRNA, which is encased by the LNP, is highly immunogenic so it is rapidly broken down by immune cells in your body if it is found outside the cell. The LNP is used to deliver the mRNA to your cell's ribosomes, which are inside the cell, so the epitope of the COVID spike protein (only the part that makes your immune cells produce antibodies, not the whole spike protein) can be presented to your immune system. Overall, I doubt you have anything to worry about regarding COVID mRNA vaccines, apart from the very small chance of myocarditis, which is also lower in both frequency and severity compared to the actual virus.

Several have been suggested including by our psychiatrist here: Exercise, novel experience, sufficient sleep; essentially, creation of alternate associational routes to memory, as in learning attentional skills as musical facility, and reading & attending seminars on complex subjects. Formal learning- classes - in both physical and mental skills. Avoiding arousal chemicals that brain cells adapt to through altering production of neurotransmitters/modulators, certainly restores normal circadian variation, as well as offering valuable opportunity to notice, attend to, change interoceptive associations, which cognitive issue has been insufficiently explored by media outside abstruse research. Do NOT make a life-practice of immersion in social media anecdotal assertions, which has not only retarded knowledge, but has induced reversion to medieval-like misattribution.

No, it doesn't work. I'm 72 and have been taking the generic version for a month and I notice no change in what is claimed. I always doubted those TV commercials. The Federal Trade Commission and New York State Attorney General have charged the marketers of the dietary supplement Prevagen with making false and unsubstantiated claims that the product improves memory, provides cognitive benefits, and is “clinically shown” to work. And it's damned expensive. I bought a small bottle of the generic Equate from Walmart (for about 1/3 the price) and here are the ingredients. Coffee (coffee arabica) Fruit Extract 100 mg. phosphatidylserine 100 mg. The phosphatidylserine supplement claims to support symptoms of anxiety by reducing stress, regulating mood and encouraging your body to relax. It claims to manage anxiety by balancing cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol is a hormone that responds to stress.
