I haven’t read any comments yet, the first thing that I noticed is that you can easily tie off those string lines without doing the bowline style knot. You only need one fixed loop at the first anchor point. An old carpenter showed me that all I needed to do was to hook my index finger in the string then do eight twists, hook the loop over the pin and pull the lines tight, both the loose end and line tensioned are the still facing back to the first anchor. It reminds me of part of some fishing knots. Once you pull the string taught you simply grab the loose end and quickly pull it back towards the anchor pin. The lines twist and create a lot of tension that resist slipping. To undo, jut pull the loose string along the tensioned string no it will release. This was a fight to type because the spell and word finder was so way off being accurate.

Don't need to pour cement, the walls are ROCK
@billm5433

Just a thought about the cement you are going to use for the root cellar. My brother lost his home in the June 22, 2012, Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 340 homes were destroyed. When they rebuilt they made a safe room in the basement out of cement. The same type of cement they use for runways at airports. They put a steel door for the room. He had several gun safes in the house, the fire caused the ammunition stored in the safes to explode and bullets went through the safe. Thanks for allowing us to join you in your journey.

I wish you could just encorporate that huge boulder into the root cellar but I guess it would just always be in the way. Luke, my youngest son, said to get the dinamite!! I'm sorry you all have to deal with that problem every time you have to dig. I'll be watching for your next plan. From Central Oklahoma

You might want to think about the drainage around your cellar. Our house sits on clay soil and we have issues with water pooling underneath our basement floor so we have had to put in a sump pump.

A large SDS and some expansive demolition grout will assist in removing those large boulders. It’s good for taking out portions off of what is in the way.

That was our guess. We have .43 acres on a little hilltop in Hunt, 17 miles west of St. Johns on 180 that has our RV parked and we are there in the summer off and on. Otherwise we are in Safford down in Graham County.

I'm wondering if that colossal boulder is going to prove to be genuinely too large to remove and instead you'll have to settle for breaking off enough to give yourself the space you need. If that's the case, maybe you could anchor some lengths of rebar into it with epoxy and have those embedded into your concrete. When I build stuff, I tend to over-build, because I don't want it ever falling apart.

Your backhoe is a great versatile machine! We have a homestead and for the past 8 years or so we have been doing everything (building a house, barn,etc.) with a wheel barrow. We recently bought a 6ton excavator and what a huge help it is. I would have rented a jackhammer for the excavator and/or blasted it if possible. I really like the rock that you get out of there- would make some nice walls, etc.! I wonder if a 20 ton excavator would have just ripped the rocks out?

Your sense of humor is good to have when dealing with so much rock/boulders. I bet when you start the digging and you start hearing the scraping your wondering how big is this one going to be. ❣️OMG it looks like to me you have hit a mother load. I find myself rooting for you when you’re trying to get a stubborn big one.

First of, very enjoyable episode again. Second, would you consider incorporating this piece of bed rock as a feature in your root cellar? Thirdly, can you rent a rock crusher, or are these machines too specialised for rental shops? It might provide enough gravel to maintain all your roads. Ki d regards Christiaan

Hopefully you don't find any prehistoric fossils while digging. Otherwise, you might have a whole crew of paleontologists take over your place for a couple years! Just kidding, but I can't help but think of the parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock (as opposed to the fool who built his house on sand) as I watch this video.
