Wonderful. I watched Seth's video sometime ago when it first came out. Remember - Sifu is older than I am. (How do ya feel now?) LOL The feet / turn / pivot thing - Sifu teaches ball of the foot most of the time. However, as my Wing Chun became my own, what I took away from Sifu is that you use what you need at the time. If you examine Tai Chi Chuan, you pivot on the ball to shift weight, on the heel to move your frame. (Imagine turning to run - you pivot on the heel). Regardless, as you suggest, people can nit-pick, but if you watch Sifu, you cannot question is knowledge.

Seth's thing is that he goes around trying all kinds of different arts and he's all about introducing Americans from the common, popular arts (karate, MMA, etc.) to new arts. Its like a guy who orders lots of different appetizers. He doesn't pretend to be an expert in anything but his brand of American Kempo. He's a really nice guy and -- he's got kind of a goofball, nice guy schtik, but he's a really good athlete (former college football player) and fighter. I've got nothing but positive things to say about him.

He doesn't do American kempo, it's okinawan kempo (pretty much just a traditional karate style) it has no connection to James mitose or the arts that descended from his style (which would be William KS chow's Kara ho kempo which ed parker learned and created american kempo)

All depends on the teacher and the school a d how they were teaching at that time. Chu shong tin would let you walk in on day one and try anything you wanted, but he would also just laugh at you if you picked something stupid you aren't ready to do. Like the dummy or the long pole and so on.

But in reality within any martial art you legitimately would spend several years doing other things before you ever reached that point. We did mostly just stance training, forms and developmental exercises, qi gong exercises etc for 2-3 years.

Sensei Seth's channel is awesome, his own style is Okinawan Karate I believe, and he goes around and tries other styles of martial arts and does it with a great sense of humor. My current Wing Chun Sifu studied under multiple lineages including some non-Hong Kong teachers, we use both heel and ball shifting, referring to ball as the Yin shift to get off-line from an incoming attack and create an angle for attack. Heel is Yang shift for other purposes such as more power. Another friend is a Wing Chun teacher from Eastern Europe and his school shifts mid-foot. I haven't started Dummy yet so don't know which we'll use on that. Really love this breakdown and examination of Sifu Fong's teachings here.

Toe, heel, whole foot has different uses. Heel when you get caught off balance or to project forwards more, makes sense for your forward intent. Toes for softer positional movements and whole foot for mixing in 7 star because it's superior to our v step, one beat ahead.

Very interesting and insightful video. I'd be incredibly interested to see a collaboration between yourself and Icy Mike. Mike is much more thinky than his big mouth personality would lead you to believe. I've yet to see him be exposed on a conceptual level to wing chun and I think he'd both be very interested and have a lot to say about it. I also think out of all the wing chun instructors I've seen, you're the one who would be most able to effectively communicate those concepts. That would be a fascinating exchange.

I came across a video talking about how to improve side kicks released by Kevin Lee. According to what one of the people he talked to stated, the reason why you lose balance with the side kick is one of two reasons, of which I believe the problem most people face is their grounded leg is too straight or too close to the kicking leg, which causes a person to lose balance, when they execute the kick. Need to test this theory, but I do believe that you can get power from the ground in your kicks, you just need to allow yourself to essentially "fall" into the kick or shift the bodyweight forward as you kick. that way you are able to push from the ground as well as push from the opponent when you kick so that you can correct your stance.

Bruce Lee's "be like water" quote is paraphrasing the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu (founder of taoism) in the 500s BC. Its great that he popularized it and I think Bruce Lee himself would say that he was introducing Western audiences to basic taoist tenets...but fanboys who get all excited saying he made it up are sideways. Its like saying the Matrix made up the blue pill / red pill metaphor. Sorry, that's the cave metaphor in Plato's Republic -- it predates the movie by about 24 centuries. I say that as a huge fan of Bruce Lee myself. But I like to think that I'm a fan of the real Bruce Lee, not the inflated caricature of Bruce Lee.

Lot of good things to think about. WC is cool,I'm glad I know a little. I like Chinese Kempo studying every strike,sticks,knives. But WC has some good ideas. It does grow on you in time. I thought kickboxing was better when I kid,lol. But my Sifu would kick my ass all the time with WingChun,lol. You couldn't move him. I was strong and athletic when I was young. I was agile and a power wrestler, too. And he would floor me using Chinese martial arts. He always said WC was his favorite. I can't believe I used to think WC was stupid.

OP, Wing Chun has uppercut and hooks? If so, I would love to see you do a video about this.
@Spikebert
@Spikebert 5 ай бұрын
Just speaking for my own lineages, we have the uppercut in 2nd form and my current teacher used a movement from 3d form as a hook. A former teacher, Bagua background, told me not to be too literal in interpreting forms, a "block" can be a strike and vice versa, but think of the forms as training your body to move and express kinetic energy for any purpose, block, strike, throw, grapple/chin-na... that's view had helped me develop my Wing Chun.
@jestfullgremblim8002
@jestfullgremblim8002 Ай бұрын
@@Spikebert you can trust that Bagua fellow. Forms are meant to showcase the essence of the art, traing the practitioner's mind and body, allow the practitoner to easily memorize certain things that may become useful later and teach them how to generate power in many different ways. Depending on the martial art, some of these things may not be true, and some others might be added. For example, martial arts like Kenjutsu do have forms that are meant to teach you how to fight! Some other martial arts like Judo or Aikido have forms in which 2 or more practitioners are present and so on... But those are the general rules. Forms traing your body (like how some forms will make you hold certain stances that make your legs stronger), teach you what the style is about (For example, Xing Yi quan's forms show explosive power that goes straight into the opponent, you are supposed to use the art like that, kinda), train your mind and character (constantly practicing a form will teach you about self perfection, discipline and other things), will give you body coordination (self explanatory) and will teach you to generate power in many ways: Bagua palm changes teach how to generate power vertically, horizontally and diagonally while moving around, also teaches about redirecting energy Xing Yi teaches how to give different properties to what would otherwise be the same technique or almost the same plus teaches you about creating power in different directions while moving forward, also teaches about redirecting energy Bajiquan's forms teach you how to generate power by sinking down as you perform your technique plus teaches you about some other things that the other 2 arts do And so on so forth. The moves in the forms are (generally) not supposed to be applied directly to fighting

My Sifu Alan Goldberg taught me the high low gong sau the same way you are explaining it. His Sifu's were Moy Yat and Jason Lau my Si Gung. Francis is Jason younger Wing Chun brother. Their master is Jiu Wan. My Mook Jong is at my navel. My issue is I have long arms and wish it was a little bit lower. I do not have it on a rack. So I have what I have. And I make work. I work on trains for MTA. I am surrounded on a daily basis by EDPs. Some of them are feces and urine covered. A lot of drug addicts. If you have been to New York City. You will see people that are threatening and will attack. There is no way in the World I will grapple with these people or even punch them. At most and open hand strike, hammer fist, or elbow. I truly believe in using low kicks to all areas. The great part of my job is I wear composite toe safety boots. And that is an amazing piece of protection. Low kicks absolutely are important.
