so the original 1.25mm orifice works well for stronger petrol washers, smaller orifice like 1.1mm is better for weaker electric washers? it would be good to see what its like to change to even bigger like 1.4mm with a petrol washer. also the steel mesh foaming element plays a role here. any ideas?

1.1 is for sure best for the weaker electric pressure washers. 1.25 is for the more powerful car detailing type pressure washers and 1.35 to 1.5 should be for gas (petrol) type pressure washers. Steel mesh a a good bit to do with the foam. Some companies even use multiple layered mesh filters.

Manufacturer says to make sure the orifice nozzle is very tight or it could be blocked causing this issue. I have tried 3 times and I bought a 2 pack, none of them work on the amazon one for some reason. I can use the original nozzle from both and they work just the same if swapped so it is not a thread size issue. This could be isolated to an older foam cannon where the parts inside have corroded, but at this point I really have no idea why it made it worse. Old nozzle works as expected after being put back in. This is strange.

I'm looking to get an inexpensive foam cannon to try, never used one before. I currently wash my car at least once a week using the 2 bucket method with Meguiars gold class and there's never any suds even filling with warm water from the kitchen sink. I have a craftsman gas pressure washer that's rated something like 2.8 gallons/min 3,000psi and it has an udjustable unloader down to maybe 1,800psi. I was looking at a chart and it seems a 3.5 orifice is suggested.
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Жыл бұрын
It won’t hurt the foam cannon. The orifice size impacts the stress on the motor as you have too much water and hole isn’t big enough to flow it all. This is worse for electric ones as motor stress increases AMP’s and can pop a breaker. Gas shouldn’t matter since you can dial it down. I couldn’t say exactly what you need the 3.5 sounds more like a spray nozzle size. For a foam cannon the orifice would be 1.5 as a sweet spot. To wash a car it’s all about flow for rinsing and less about pressure. Too much it’s sure is not good for plastic and rubber trim and it will turn dirt on the car into micro scratch missiles. 1k PSI is the sweet spot for car washing. Probably need a 5, 6 or even 7 nozzle to get that.

Let me help you out here. 3.5 is not an actual measurement, it's a model type number. Annoyingly there are two of these, one is the US standard which denotes nozzles from 1.0 and up in 0.5 increments. and the Euro metric style that uses a triple digit system starting wtih 010. Here's what you need to know. Your 3.5 nozzle is a 1.22 mm nozzle, so for a foam cannon, you need to stick to your 1.25. If you install a 3.0, which is a 1.09 mm i.e 1.1 mm nozzle, one of two things will happen. Either your pressure will go up to 3500 psi and the flow will stay at 2.8 GPM, or your flow will drop to 2.6 GPM and your pressure will only go as high as the engine on your machine or something else will allow. More often than not, the latter is the outcome and won't be of benefit to you. People are incredibly hung up on PSI, but flow is equally important, especially for foam cannons. So that 1.25 is the best you can get. If you find that your foam is thin, make sure that your PIR is correct. Most foams are designed to he mixed in a 1-1.5 PIR. If you don't understand what PIR is, just google it, it is also easy to measure and calculate. Now seeing that you are using a 3000 PSI washer for a car, let's talk nozzles for a bit.When you clean a car, you need all the flow you can get, but you also need to keep that pressure in check. If you back that unloader down, you do decrease pressure, but on behalf of flow. For this reason you need to choose a nozzle that will provide you with max flow at a lower PSI. For car washing, no more than 1200-1300 PSI is a good idea and preferably 1100-1200 PSI if you like to stand close or use a 15 or 25 degree nozzle. In order to get that pressure with full flow, you need either a set of fan nozzles with a 5.0 or 5.5 orifice. Those equate to 1.45 mm and 1.52 mm. Even a 1.4 mm orifice which is a 4.5, will still give a 1500 PSI pressure, which is just too high for safely washing a car. As you can see, you can of course get a set of 1.5 mm nozzles if the size is provided in mm for the ones you find. A 1.5mm nozzle is basically a 5.3 type nozzle. So always use nozzles of the correct size to set your pressure so that flow remains on point. The unloader is mostly for situations where you need to really dial both back or can't control the pressure with a nozzle of the proper size. Here's a quick list of what size nozzles will do. If you want to run at an actual 3000 PSI, you need a 3.25 nozzle. These are available. 3.25 would also be the equivalent of a Euro size 040 nozzle. Those have an orifice of 1.19 mm. 3.25 = 2.8 GPM @ 3000 PSI - 1.19 mm 3.5 = 2.8 GPM @ 2500 PSI - 1.22 mm 4.0 = 2.8 GPM @ 2000 PSI - 1.32 mm 4.5 = 2.8 GPM @ 1500 PSI - 1.40 mm 5.0 = 2.8 GPM @ 1200 PSI - 1.45 mm 5.5 = 2.8 GPM @ 1000 PSI - 1.52 mm Lastly there are options in between if you also use the nozzles using the triple digit system, such as the very common 045 which is a 1.27 mm nozzle. And the very used 1.25 is a 042 nozzle. So there you go. That's basically how it works.

i hav read that using a smaller orificie in the foam cannon can strain your pressure washer? Is there any truth to this? I know not using a proper sized nozzle can cause back pressure, but can the foam cannon cause back pressure on your machine and damage it too?
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Жыл бұрын
Depending on the machine yes it can cause extra stress, but usually on higher flow machines. Most of the 1.2gpm machines should be fine as it’s a flow issue that becomes a pressure problem. Too much water goin through too small a hole cause the motor to work harder increases the Amps used. Best way is to have a electricity meter and know the limits of the machine. As long as you stay under the limit you are good. Example my Greenworks on a 1.1 runs 14 amps and machine rates for 15. My active 2.0 does well over 15 Amp when running 1.1 and is only rated for 15. It is actually very close to the limit on a 1.25 size. It will work, but life of the machine will decrease at a higher rate and possibly overheat.

@@CarsWithKeav my machine is rated at 1.2gpm, but I measured it and its actually closer to 1.4.gpm. So you're saying a 1.1 on foam cannon would be fine for my machine's gpm?

@@CyberSkunk90 It should be. 1.25 you wouldn’t need to worry about till you’re in that 1.6/1.7+ range. Actual 1.6/1.7 though never believe the Amazon ads 😂

all pressure washers should have a pressure relief valve that opens once the pressure gets too big. i think it regulates itself automatically so if there is a blockage (the orifice) the valve opens proportionally to that. otherwise the washer or the hose or the handheld gun nozzle would explode due to overpressure

I have seen mixed results depending on the foam cannon. In the video I had one that would work with the 1.1mm. Might just be the design of the foam cannon. Also, some pressure washers struggle running the 1.1 orifice as it puts a lot of load on the pump.

@@philippeaboussouan2361 Could be water. The 1.1 works to well on mine as it overheats the motor. That s why you should only use a 1.25 on a VE52. @@philippeaboussouan2361 The 1.1 is too small for the K7. It is basically trying to create 3000 PSI and it was never designed for that. The 1.25 is the correct size. If you struggle to get foam, you need to make sure that your PIR is correct. Sadly, more often than not, the recommendations on the bottles are too low and based on the idea of telling the consumer that they get a lot of use from a bottle of product. Look up how to measure and calculate your PIR. Most snow foams are designed to be used in a 1%-2% PIR. PIR is Panel Impact Ratio. It is basically the total dilution once the foam exits the foam cannon.

1.25 and most all foam cannons come with that, but many are starting to come with 1.1 knowing its just easier to make foam. I've learned a lot about these since making this video. Amazing what can be done with a different size hole, but going 1.1 you have to be careful as it can put lots of stress on the pressure washer. I've upgraded pressure washers and use only 1.25 now.

I'm sorry, but to say that those foam lances are designed to work primarily with a large gas pressure washer, is absolutely ridiculous. Hell, most gas pressure washers won't even like a 1.25 orifice. Yes, if you buy those garbage Ryobi machines and what have you with next to no flow, then obviously you need to run the 1.1 or even smaller. But if you buy a normal quality pressure washer like a Stihl RE-150, a Kränzle HD 10/122, or even just one of those overpriced Kärcher K5 or K7's, rarely will a 1.1 be needed. All you have to do is to measure your pressure with an inline pressure gauge and that will tell you all you need to know. At some point you will not gain pressure and just overwrok the machine, and all you get is less flow. More often than not, the only reason why the smaller orifice changes the foam on normal good electric machines, is because it changes the PIR. There are actually tables out there that will tell you what nozzle you need in relation to flow and pressure. Get your pressure right and just make sure your PIR is correct. It is not rocket science and unless your machine is very small like a Kränzle 1122 or is garbage like a Kärcher K2, Ryobi and what not, you more than likely need the 1.25 and all you have to do is to know what mix ratio you need. Most snow forams are designed to work in a 1-2% PIR, so just make sure the mix is right. It's like people who think the MJJC is the dogs danglies. It isn't. All they did was to deliberately make a lance that pulls up a lot of product and have low aeration. Sadly that just creates a useless heavy form that can't do any work. It is not complicated, all we need is a bit of common sense and logic.
