Does the Marvel 'Moon Knight' series show an accurate portrayal of Dissociative Identity Disorder?

In this (slightly different from usual) video, Dr Mike Lloyd, CTAD Clinic Director, looks at the first episode of Marvel's Moon Knight, a depiction of a superhero with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). There are no spoiler warnings to this video! Mike looks at the diagnostic criteria for DID and discusses how the portrayal of the character Steven Grant, played by Oscar Isaac, can be considered in the light of the way that the DID is presented in the episode.

Oscar Isaac did a lot of research to try to stay true to the comics and portray DID accurately within that context. We really loved it! Using mirrors to bring internal conversations out for the audience was good. And yes, he kills people, but there's a reason for that. Some very sad moments later that explain why he developed DID, but the relationship between Steven and Marc turns out beautifully in the end.

In a Disney+ special about the series, Oscar Issac said he worked with Robert Oxnam, who was dx’d with DID in his late 40s and wrote a memoir about it called “A Fractured Mind.” I think Oxnam is in his late 70s now, but, based on his fascinating career history, he seems like a perfect match for Issacs and his MoonKnight characters.

Mirror archetypes is big in this show. To reflect both personalities. Often times when I look in the mirror I won't see my own face all the time. It's altered to some degree. Sometimes I see an older feminine version or a more masculine version of my face. I kind of hate it.

We did a review and breakdown of each episode on our channel- the show was definitely a mixed bag but overall the most important episode was the fifth where they go into Marc's trauma. We took issue with the way the system was portrayed here, as Marvel really messed up the Theory of structural dissociation. We cover that aspect of the show in our final review and manage to make a bit of sense of it. Overall we found that the series provided fairly accurate representation of the challenges Systems face, like missing time, ect. Thanks for your thoughts on the series!

@@MichaelSmith420fu We go into it in our last episode review and then the final review, but the TL/DR version is that while the ending absolutely plays into the deepest and most offensive Hollywood trope around DID, which is the 'evil' alter which is hiding in the system ready to do violence at a moment's notice; they do at least provide good representation of dissociative conditions, so it balanced (no pun intended) out.

@@TheInfinitySystem oh I only saw the one review.. I'll have to check out the rest. I agree that the murderous personality is a negative stereotype. It's something that a lot of us have had to probably deal with at times... I certainly have. With regards to the show, I'm glad that they at least illustrated the connection and history between Steven and Mark though because it shows the humanity at the core of the system. I'm hoping they'll incorporate the same idea for this new altar Jake. I think there's a fine line between illustrating a protector alter from a homicidal personality and I hope they figure that out. I thought the idea of the Egyptian gods using humans as avatars was interesting. I like that Konshu is trying to protect the natural order and stop judgement from happening before it's time. I tend to make a lot of my own analogs for storylines like these. Like.. each God portrays some different aspect and each personality does too. In a way, some of these things are fairly accurate. They kinda represent the struggle of someone who is fractured. Like, for my system, there are definitely ppl who are more unstable and aggressive than we would like but I've learned it's better to embrace them, not deny them. Anyways.. hopefully the series will expand more on the humanity of DID. 💛😎

The scariest thing about this disorder for me really is the "lack of control" aspect. I've had a lot of experiences of being in my head, screaming "stop stop stop" and being completely unable to *do* anything other than watch in abject horror. It's beyond terrifying. There are no words to explain the fear i feel in those moments. Also I always find the "looking in the mirror and seeing someone else" trope very interesting, because when that happens to me, what I'm seeing isn't "someone else's face" where the face is that of an alter. What I'm looking at is the reflection of the physical body, which doesn't match my self-perception, and i'll feel anywhere from somewhat weirded out to genuinely distressed, depending of course on the alter fronting at the time. Some of us avoid mirrors specifically because we know what we're going to see isn't what we expect/want to see. I have aphantasia (can't visualize imagery; I think in spoken words. When I think of an apple my brain starts reciting the dictionary definition with accompanying adjectives) so it's really interesting to see some folks in the comments talking about actually seeing a face that is not the body's face when they look in the mirror.

Interestingly, I have a diagnosis of DID and although I don’t have Aphantasia I recently discovered my 8 year old child does. My 8 year old has autism and severe sound sensitivity and my therapist wondered if the Aphantasia could be a way of filtering sensory input due to overload… in this way it’s possible there could be a dissociative link

I LOVED moon knight. I went in very cautious because his comic origins differ a lot ( from child hood trauma causing his DID to him just willing alters into existence in other ones ) we had no clue what origin the show would be following but I was pleasantly surprised that it did follow the origin of childhood trauma ( episode 5) Whenever people have asked my opinion on the show as someone with DID I tend to say “it’s well rooted in reality “ because like obviously it’s going to have highly dramatized depictions… it’s a super hero show it’s not real life and they don’t try to convince that it’s factual it’s very obviously for entertainment. That’s where I see a lot of people with DID & OSDD getting upset which is understandable. It’s frustrating to not get a real life example of what life is like and to have you condition trivialized for other peoples entertainment BUT I think moon knight did it respectfully & the success of the show could open up more avenues for more accurate uses of DID in media that’s not murderous . Overall it was very obvious that the creators did their research and actually listened to the professionals they hired! I am in love with the show and the characters despite the inaccuracies. & I am 100% working on a Moon Knight costume / almost a cosplay bc the show to me was just amazing and very relatable .

You have no idea how much validity you've added to finally understanding and the what was the beginning of self diagnosing what I've been going through with them since childhood but was mostly brainwashed to sweep under a rug my by christian/catholic toxic family. Most of us hyperfixate on stuff like cinema so it's easy & fun to digest deep dive/philosophical films or shows that touch on topics we are highly curious about or just love the synposis/director/genre etc. Moon knight knight rather than any of the other dissociative film references we've seen was the one to make me stop being angry with them and supressing them thinking it was their fault life has always been so hard when most of them have been helping me or trying to help my stubborn ass. especially split which we kinda liked entertainment wise because it's Shyamalan movie so its to be expected and knew the depiction would be waaay too exaggerated to pay it any mind to connect any dots to ourselves. Please watch up to atleast episode 5. It's what unbrainwashed me so I could talk to them without telling them to stfu or pushing them away but finally becoming aware that they exist too and they are just like anyone esle who just wants to be understood and a chance to exist & express themselves... it's been a lot this year so far

Thank you for this Video, you have been very gracious 😊 Personally, I just really could not stand the idea of introducing the Inner-Person by a sort of "psychotic episode" (positiv hallucination) through the independent reflections in the Mirrors. They could have chosen a different way, or just stick with the headvoice🤔 since a lot of the rest was very informed. But overall it did help us that he was possessed by an Egyptian god.😅 Also, for those with DID, a small TW: be carefull in the - I think second to last episode - it looks like one of the Inner-People dies and is left in a desert😬 that was very scary and confusing to our Inner-children, since by then we got so comfortable watching, that a lot of the System choined in on it... BUT it will be resolved later! Nobody is gonna die on the inside💪🏼

I think you're about to change your opinion about some things that are shown in later episodes. The first one is actually the best one. Later on we see stereotypes that I really am sick of by now. Hollywood's version of DID is still limited to a specific view (an alter who's a murderer, a mental condition that's questionable, a very late realization of fugues or amnesias and ...). I am glad though, that they show at least that the "hero" has a traumatic past and struggels with his condition...

We watched the series. Most of it was fairly okay for us. My only warning, which is NOT a spoiler for anyone with OSDD/DID, is Episode 5, where they go over his childhood trauma... It could very easily cause mental distress, it did for us in some scenes. Is it absolutely necessary to watch Episode 5? NOT AT THE COST OF YOUR WELL-BEING! It's trauma, it's trauma, we who have lived similar childhood trauma don't need to relive it. Does it have details for the show, yes, but REALLY not enough to be worth it. Does it move the story forward? In a way not really. It's a re-examination of life events. For those who DON'T have OSDD/DID, it explains a lot. For those of us that do? We already know how "it" happens. Just know that there is enough there to be triggering to someone who has experienced childhood trauma to be distressed. I will leave it to Dr. Lloyd to express his opinion on if it was realistic to OSDD/DID experience: age at time of trauma, how alter was created, how/what caused DID to become less covert, and anything else he feels is appropriate from the Episode in the realm of OSDD/DID. I just didn't want someone to bing watch it & not be aware that Episode 5 can be very rough for some.
