In this second review video, Dr Mike Lloyd, CTAD Clinic Director, looks at the next episode (Ep 2) of Marvel's Moon Knight, a depiction of a superhero with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). There are no spoiler warnings to this video! Here, Mike has a look at how the portrayal of the main character, Steven Grant (played by Oscar Isaac), could be seen as a manifestation of psychosis if sufficient knowledge about dissociation was not present. The character has a number of signs and symptoms that could be interpreted either through the lens of psychosis or dissociation, and Mike considers how problems with diagnosis can occur, as they often do in many people diagnosed with DID.

TRIGGER WARNING LIST for episode 5 ( I don’t think any of them would be considered spoilers but proceed with caution) Even people without trauma history left this episode feeling incredibly drained so please be mindful especially if these trigger warnings are applicable to you/ your system. I would also recommend watching with someone and having little grounding things around you just in case . Most common TRIGGER warnings relevant to episode 5 not in any particular order mental hospitals heavy verbal abuse implied/ off screen physical abuse death ( off screen but audio ) screaming kids brief moment of SH not cutting [[This one may be a spoiler to some extent but I’d rather warn someone than have someone go in blind and be very triggered : drowning ]] Although for a lot of people the episode was difficult to watch I still found it very comforting in the way they talked about and handled the traumatic elements. It is a really great episode overall just be mindful of your trauma and such

I feel like dissociation in general is an ongoing cycle of confusion between reality and dream. Steven waking up from an event that actually happened as if it were a dream. I am, we, whatever am constantly in that state. The only thing that's kept me grounded enough is my role as a mother and wife to my family (which is so difficult to navigate sometimes) and the truth of Self. We live in a waking dream and go to sleep and enter another dream realm. It literally keeps me sane to know we are constantly dreaming.

Excellent discussion! Yes, being believed was so very helpful, as we felt like we were going crazy before our therapist validated our experience. It made such a difference to know that we had a name for our experience and there were things we could work on to help. Thank you Dr Mike!

I've watched the series and everyone said that ep. 5 was really triggering, but it was not that bad for me actually. Idk why... Anyway... we've been lurking on the channel for a while and as someone who can't afford therapy (and is not even available in our country), you helped a lot for our system. Just wanted to say thank you. It's so nice to learn about DID/OSDD from an actual professional. :)

Ep 5 is a bit triggering but it was such a relief too- it shows the links between childhood trauma and DID. Ethan as a therapist 😏 There is one thing you haven’t picked up yet and that is because it isn’t revealed until Ep 5- a bit of a twist between Stephen and Marc. Can you please binge watch the next 3 episodes 🤣

I love hearing your feedback on the episodes. On episode 3, one scene so far was pretty triggering for me. The response of one charecter and the change in response from the previous episode was really hard to watch. While my symptoms are classified as OSDD-1 at this time and sometimes watching DID related content can trigger denial, there were actually a few moments that really validated and resonated with me, including how some of the symptoms I've experienced. In episode 2, I was also wondering psychosis or DID and really glad you made a video on it. I really loved what you said in this video and so much resonated. I will be sharing with my therapist. Such as you would listen to what he is saying to understand the diagnosis (vs. assuming psychosis). And the emotional regulation with being believed about everything he was saying. With having a lot of retraumitizations through invalidation and denial of my reality including while trying to seek therapy for trauma, these are huge themes for me.

8:00 yes exactly. There's two distinct things going on with the Moon Knight character(s), there's the realistic/grounded element of DID and then there's the supernatural elements of Khonshu & other egyptian mythology related things. People who didn't read the comics and didn't know much about DID sometimes conflated the two in episode 1, but I'm glad the show cleared that up for them right in episode 2. I think they did a good job separating those two elements for the rest of the show.

Fun fact about the author of the moon knight comic, they were actually inspired by the book syble (a book about DID in the 80is I think) I think there is a KZfaq video that explains this. Anyway, the reason moon knight has alters is because the author read that book during the time when moon knight was introduced in marvel.

Interesting, that film certainly had a big impact. I though Sally Field did a great job, regardless of the later information about it. It remained central to many people’s understanding of DID, so this isn’t surprising at the time.

@Fashread Sybil did not fake it for outside attention, Sybil wanted MORE attention from their therapist, who specialized in DID, and who was researching for a book. Sybil then became the subject of the book. Sadly the therapist still published the book, even after they discovered Sybil was faking it.

I looooove these two videos on Moon Knight! I'm probably too sensitive to watch the show myself so I'm really thankful to hear about it from your point of view :) I know you love a lot of fun media like comics, so if you end up doing any more media analysis I'd love to hear what you think of Adventure Time season 5 episode 34 "The Vault". It's absolutely fantastic hearing a professional's opinion on the show, thank you for sharing these. There's a lot of systems that won't give it the time of day for one reason or another, but the whole thing- although it has it's moments- really felt, finally, like a piece of relatable content for those with DID/OSDD. We'll be certain to link them to this video series so they can be a judge before potentially going into something that may be troubling for them. Also: We can't remember if it's episode 2 or 3, but there was a scene where Steven hears Marc talk to him, and he very clearly acts like he can hear him Outside his head (in the physical world). This personally annoyed us, because we felt it may have actually been harmful to spread the further misinformation that DID is outside voices and not inside voices- or even if it was accidentally showing some form of psychosis with the character, but didn't distinct it enough. We'd love to hear your opinion on that in a future video if you'd feel it fits.

This also brings up a repeat experience I've had where a next generation alter will use familiar phrases of a diminished/vanished alter unprompted. Are these merely an echo of the past? I'd very much like to believe it's a temporary resurfacing of an alter to let me know they're okay. However, I recognize this isn't a very objective idea.

Although my previous partner(s) with DID seemed to scoff at a mainstream representation of their condition, and I’m well aware it’s not a “one size fits all” situation- I appreciated the slightly simpler portrayal to help me better grasp understanding DID. We're enjoying your reviews and it's what made us decide to watch Moon Knight as I've been wondering whether to give it a go. We're watching with my husband so it's been great to see your input and has been good for starting conversations between us about DID. I'm struggling a bit to stay grounded watching it, but it's been good to watch, but only watched up to episode 3 so far. I know this may not be the right video to put this under, but I thought commenting under the most recent video would give my question a better chance of being read. See, I’m not diagnosed with OSDD, but I heavily suspect it. I have all of the symptoms exempt for any sort of communication. External communication is impossible, I think, because I don’t switch out; I, um, “merge,” I guess. It’s really easy for me to notice when an action isn’t mine and that’s when it stops. Or else I don’t notice and I go on in a dissociative state for a while, riding in the passenger seat. So that leads me to internal communication, right? Only, I don’t know how. I’m fairly certain there is an inner world, but I can’t reach it- can’t visualize with any sort of permanence myself being there. The only times I ever see it is when I’m escorted there by a male alter of mine. But does that mean that in order to communicate, I should just think really hard in that general direction? Record messages of myself reaching out and play it on loop in my headphones while I go about my day? I’ve heard you talk about signposting, leaving notes inside for people to come across and see. But I’m afraid that any part of the inner world I am able to access isn’t permanent and that the moment I leave, so will the note. Like a dream.

Hi Michelle, I certainly don't see it as a behaviour disorder, though the symptoms are often of a type of disordered behaviour - however, looking at behaviour properly often introduces a logic to things, so it needs time to work out and sift through. Things like OCD result from anxiety, DID results from trauma. These are different neurological processes.
