I'd argue that cats do need this. Many cats don't react to catnip at all. Mine ignores the stuff. You're also just eliciting a pheromonal response which while may be euphoric to some cats isn't really the same as feeding them something tasty that they'll enjoy.

Freezer clean-outs from hunting & fishing. Alaskan salmon! Chews on sticks to brush & floss his teeth. And you're right, if we let our dogs train us, that's what they want. No choice with the malamute breed part of the beast. If you don't provide that warm flesh food, they'll hunt it! And with both the Husky & Malamute escape-artist breeds, either they train you - - or they leave!
