Chesapeake Bay Retriever are not hardheaded like most people think. You work them like you would your own children. You make it fun and they respond. I took both of my Chessie to an good obedience class, handling class, & retrieving classes. They are smart, good hunting dogs, a good working dog, family dogs, therapy dogs, and protectors. To me, I would not have any other kinds of dog. I have had other breeds and the Chessie are the best. I always called my Chessie an Humog. Meaning Human dog.

The word "no"can be used in several ways when you're training a dog. It can be used as a command in which the dog is told to stop whatever he is doing. It can be used informatively to help link an inappropriate behavior to a slightly delayed correction and it can be used the way I'm using it in this video, to reinforce a correction.

I had a Chessie 12.5 years from when he was 6 weeks old. till he went to the Rainbow Bridge. I had him no leash trained in just over a year, in the city and our town with streets and lots of distractions. Very smart dogs Would not go into the street... He was an alpha male, I would joke with friends, I'm 1, he's 2 and everybody else is 3. but it really was not a joke. If you have the time to spend with a Chessie and do some training you will be well rewarded. I appreciate this gentleman's video but He is a 3, he just don't know it yet. One more observation from my years with DJ, They have a memory that is nothing short of incredible, my family with our Dogs would go camping once or twice a year. 2 years since we went to this camp site and as soon as I turned on a road 2 miles from the place, he knew where we were, he remembered amazing.

My Chessie female will likely get her Open Obedience Title this summer (she already has her CD), she competes in Agilty and she hunts waterfowl. Are they heardheaded? We've had four. They are independent thinkers, and are not a dog for an inexperienced handler. But that does not mean they aren't sensitive. They respond best to someone who is willing to lead - and this does not mean being tough - it simply means being consistent, fair, and firm. They are really smart and will test you if they don't think you are up to the job of leader. They make incredible partners in all sports - love to show off how smart they are, and can be one of the funniest breeds - they are often clowns who have a sophisticated sense of humor. Because they are so intelligent, they do best when they get a lot of human companionship - living in the house, being with the family.

Your commands were unclear to him. This Chessie thought that the time to "sit" was only after you said "sit, no sit", and then gave a leash correction. Dogs should only be asked to "sit" one time. If they do not obey, they should be put into the position. Continuous begging and saying certain words will only lead to a dog waiting to hear "sit" three times before he thinks he should.
@genelonsway
@genelonsway 10 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but the only thing that is unclear is your perception of what you saw in the video. Repeatedly, the sit command was given, then the correction was made, then the word "no" was used to reinforce the correction and finally the word sit was used again to remind the dog what he needed to do to resolve the situation. The whole sequence takes about a second so it's pretty hard for inexperienced folks to catch what's going on. Watch the video closely and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I have a Chesapeake myself, very easy to train and he was 1 when we got him. Stop saying NO SIT because he will associate it with the actual SIT command that you tried to achieve, as you can see in your video

Did you know that every one of the major organizations that train seeing eye dogs in the United States use choke chains to deliver corrections for misconduct or mistakes? Are you saying that they are all using outdated methods and that you know more about dog training than they do?

YIKES! Your timing is horrendous and you are the reason why people think Chessies are hard to train and/or 'stubborn.' No-Sit? REALLY? Wow! Which one were you wanting NO? Or Sit? You don't really understand Chesapeakes very well or you would know Chessies work for PRAISE as opposed to negative reinforcement. As for the dog being 'reactive' it is because you have not given him ONE CLEAR command. You are ALL OVER the place in what you are doing with him. This is SO painful I can't watch anymore!!!

YIKES! I'm why people think Chessies are hard to train and/or stubborn? I'm sorry, but that perception is a couple of hundred years old and I'm only 57. As to your comment, concerning the words No and Sit, you missed the point totally. The words "No" and "Sit" were not given together. They were given in sequence. The sit command was given, then the correction was made, then the word "no" was used to reinforce the correction and finally the word sit was used again to remind the dog what he needed to do to resolve the situation. The whole sequence takes about a second so it's pretty hard for inexperienced folks to catch what's going on. Watch the video again (if it's not too painful) and you'll see what I'm talking about. As to your comment about negative reinforcement, that's not what I'm doing. I am punishing the dog for not responding to my command quickly enough. Negative reinforcement is something else. If you don't believe me, and I doubt you will, Google "negative reinforcement vs punishment." You'll get about 100,000 results. You might also try "negative reinforcement examples." That will get you almost 1,000,000 results. Lastly, you mention giving the dog "one clear command." Where I come from a command is mandatory. That means that there is a consequence for non-compliance. Without consequences for non-compliance a "command" is no more than a request. Have a nice day.

Gene Lonsway You should feel ashamed for using a choke collar. And i agree 100% with the comment. Your timing is absolutely terrible

honestly, I don't think anybody on here has any idea and making stupid comments, we got our Chessie from Petland, should of went through a breeder because maybe we would of learned that Chessie's are a hardheaded dog and need constant training and they are not suitable for inexperienced trainers or with Cheasapeake's. when we brought our dog home we noticed he sounded like he had a cough, like kennel cough, as it turned out he had pneumonia. so that had to be cleared up before we could worry about training him. so after that, I took him to a training class and the class was trained by a retired k9 trainer. now this guy trained dogs in the Pennsylvania police force the same dogs that protect you and I and you know what he told us to get for the classes, a choke collar. as long as you know how to use a choke collar they are effective. this "K9 TRAINER" also said "to get the dogs attention, get a pop can, fill it with bolts, change, or something like that and if he's not paying attention shake the can that'll get his attention, if you have to throw the can at him, you will not hurt that dog, you'll hurt the can before you hurt that dog." You have to use words like, NO, SIT, STAY, DOWN. They are short words that get to the point and you do not repeat those words, like you say "SIT" we as humans hear it instantaneously and know what to do, but for a dog it might take if 5-10 seconds to understand so you must wait then say it again. to repeat these commands over and over isn't doing any good for your training. I learned training this dog is like training a child, with a child you have to be specific and to the point and use short phases or you child will lose interest, just like a dog. you have to talk down to the dog so that your dog know that you are the alpha male, if not, you will have a problem with your Chessie. We still have problems with our so we contacted a group called "Bark Busters" which was the worse thing ever, $600 later he was only at my house like 4 times and I think it was because he wasn't experienced with a Chessie breed. my dog sits when told, I'll say down he'll get down for a second. I do agree with flowin83, you can't say "NO, SIT" 1 to mant command words in there you'll end up confusing the dog. it should be "NO" a pause and the "SIT".

Hmmm, i think maybe you are wrong...re-read your own post. Contradicting. Chessies are smart, bore easy, and are very sensitive. Put your chessie on a line, he'll out do a lab. Put your chessie in the water all day, he'll out swim anything...put him in a K9 obedience class and he will say, fuck off-im an american breed, i work, i figure it out, and i will do anything for my family...i am bred to do all of this, because my family is too busy, they need a dog that can get it done. Follow this basic line of thought on the breed and the CBR will get it done.

We have had 3 Chessies. All raised from pups. All well socialized, and trained appropriately to be interactive and gentle. This method is not necessary to train a chessis. This video actually made me incredibly angry.

@@paulgraham9791 Hey, I know it's been three years and you probably won't see this, but how do you train your dogs compared to his comment and compared to the video? We have an 11-week old Chessie and it's our first dog. So far the training has been going well and the dog has shown no stubbornness. I just wanted to ask in advance before the dog starts getting harder to train as he gets older

Not acceptable in many dog schools in Europe... if you have to use a choak collar to teach sit... well, that is a baaad trainer. With this knowledge you would not pass the exam for the K9 instructor here - like Cezar did not in Germany...

The dog clearly doesn't understand the sit command but tries to please the handler than she gets a choke and no... whats the point... its old fashioned, you have to understand dogbehavior before you train :/
