When I was a child, maybe around 10 years old, I got my first dog; a Chow named Bear. He was not a puppy, he was a large, red Chow given to my mother by our neighbor after Bear attack him. Why did my mother give him to me? Well, I lived in a very abusive home, and I guess she wanted to scare me and even hoped that I would get hurt. However, thanks to her I found my own guardian angel. Bear loved me, and I loved him. He was fiercely loyal to the point of protecting me from my mother, and sleeping with my at night. He would never leave my side when I was at home, and I began training him. The most loyal, sweet, protective dog I have ever had. For years Bear protected me against the abuse, but when I was 13, my mother lied, and said that Bear bit her. He never bit anyone other than his former owner, and to my horror he was taken and put down. That same week I ran away from home. To this day I love Bear, and Chows. Edit: I’m a bit surprised to still be getting responses to this old comment, so I’ll update it a bit. My mother has a personality disorder, she’s a narcissist. She would often do things like this to me to control me and hurt me, just because she could. If you know someone who is under the care or control of a narcissist, please help them, it’s almost impossible to get away from them on your own. Stay safe, wear a mask, and be responsible. Love you all.

over 10 years ago I paid nearly $1900 for an AKC female Chow. Pure white female. She had been a wonderful pet. Super super smart practically house broke itself. Only had a few accidents when it was a pup. I can leave the front door wide open. She will sit inside until I say "ok". Same thing if I leave the outside gate open. Automatically sits when I take her for walks when I stop. I swear she can read my mind. She is my "baby girl baby".

My father had a Chow when he was a kid, it literally adopted him and his family. He just showed up one day in their garage, un-tagged un-neutered and a year old. My grandfather told the dog when he finally saw it "you must be really stupid to be hanging around these kids." and that's how he got his name, Stupid. My dad told me the dog lived outside his entire life, got fed canned 5 cent dog food, and saw the vet maybe twice. My dad said Stupid was the smartest dog he ever owned, also the longest lived, he lived almost 14 years after my dad found him.

@h.thumbsthomas5479 5 жыл бұрын
@@lillypop3535 Yes it's super sad. "Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV) is a life threatening disorder most commonly seen in large, deep-chested dogs. In its early stage, the stomach fills with gas, causing a simple gastric dilatation or bloat. Sometimes, the condition progresses no further than a bloat. A GDV is a progression of the bloat into a volvulus, in which the huge, gas-filled stomach twists upon itself so that both the entrance and exit of the stomach become occluded. This is a life-threatening emergency that requires surgery to correct." -aspengrovevet.com To prevent this some owners will have their dog's "stomach stapled" to prevent it from being able to flip if they experience bloat.

Chow Chow's are an amazing breed of dog. Their loyalty to the family is unmatched. I've owned three and each one had a unique personality. They're definitely protective though of their home. Unless you socialize them at a very young age, they will be very aggressive towards strangers, however they will love the family more than anything. I think they get a bad rap due to people wanting to cuddle them and them not wanting strangers nearby.

Me and my fiancé have a 2 month old chow chow right now who LOVES kids. He'd lick them and play with them. Yes he may play bite (which is normal for a puppy) but you just have to teach them to stop. We bring him almost everywhere we go so he could meet new people. He's very stubborn but also very smart. He'll go to you when he wants to and WILL try to out smart you. Within a week he already knows how to sit, stay, high five, down and play fetch. You really just have to be patient and firm with them. But let me tell you this, ANY dog has the tendency to be aggressive but it really is up to the owner to properly train them. If you're thinking of getting a chow chow go to a breeder and see the puppy yourselves. Our Chewie chose us when we went there and he proved to us that we made the right choice of getting him. :D

She snapped at our heels to make us walk where she wanted us to walk but she did soften over the years. She's 15 now and can't believe she's been with me through middle, high and much of college. It's unfair to label them as "Aggressive" because like every person, every chow has a different personality. Edit: I probably should should have said that every dog, animal, etc can have a distinct personality, and how they develop shouldn't be so black and white. The chow that I mentioned, is a giant marshmallow. He doesn't like to fight at all, and when he got attacked, the worse he did was give a warning bark. The other dog was biting him, and he didn't bite back. I understand that he's a rare case, but honestly I believe that with the right nurturing environment, a chow can be raised to not be as aggressive.

We had him since he was a puppy and fit in our hands, he lived to be a little over a month away from 16 years old. Almost 112 in human years. He was the best dog ever. Social to those that would come in the house, guarded the family. Everyone loved him, we are still getting cards, and flowers since he past. He was a very health dog for the most part except for the end of his life his legs and hips would give out on him. Great memory and great companion. Mushu is in heaven and in no pain now. I remember my neighbor having a big and fluffy male chow chow! I had old little lady who was a lovely german shepherd mix, she was well liked in the whole neighbourhood due to being so nice and careful. I even remembered other kids (I was a small kid at the time too) running up happily to me and my dad just to greet our dog. But anyways, back to the chow chow. The chow chow was named “Bosse” (It’s a Swedish name) and was suuuuuper lazy. Every time I would see him he would just walk super slow and even sometimes just lay down right on the spot to take a -not so quick- nap. But every time he saw my german shepherd he would just immediately start running towards us and wag his big fluffy tail! My german shepherd would always play a bit hard to get, due to her only having eyes on me and my dad at the time but she really loved the new found attention she got from “Bosse”. I was one time walking my dog by myself when I suddenly saw one of “Bosse’s” owners struggling to making him get up after laying down on the road to sleep, while the other owner just couldn’t stop laughing. Thankfully the road wasn’t trafficked at all at the time but since they were in a rush they had to get him to continue walking. That was when “Bosse” suddenly saw me (his favourite kid in the neighbourhood, due to him being a real food lover and that I would always would always share a bit of my rice to him) and my dog. He immediately stood up, making both his owners who were really strong and well trained almost fall due to how quick he rushed up, he rushed towards us and started licking me and my dog. The owners had a good laugh about how a small kid and an old dog could make “Bosse” get up while they couldn’t. I miss Bosse and my old dog a lot. If you guys want to hear more stories about my dog I would gladly share them! I really needed to rant about how much I miss them lol.

She didn't really like strangers until she got to know them. She loved other dogs and liked to socialize. She loved ladies and not so sure about men but that was because of her street life in Mexico. She was OK with my cat too and would have liked to be friends but my cat was not having it. They eventually started to sleep together and made friends. Everyone always thoughts she was a Toller because of her beautiful red coat. She was a wonderful companion.

My Chow, red Rosie, is a sweetie. I got her from a rescue group when she was about 3 years old. She had puppies when found and heart worm; puppies were OK & Rosie was treated for the heart worm before I got her. One of my cats became her best friend, often washing Rosie's face & ears, and then would flop down on her front paws, & Rosie would bath him as if her was a puppy. Rosie & I walked all over my neighborhood, including alleys, in all kinds of weather. She was friendly with children and elderly. The local "gang" would part the way on the sidewalk when I came walking with Rosie and a black Chow-mix, Suze, I had at the time. They didn't know that both Chow dogs were very friendly and sweet tempered. Suze has since died, but Rosie is now 14 and still enjoys taking walks and meeting people, & lives with a cat.

Originally this dog is aggresive when it's not owned by anyone So it makes sense why they marked this dog aggresive the only way for a chow chow to not be aggresive is to teach it obedience.

we have a chow japanese spitz mix. We got him when he was just a puppy because we wanted a guard dog. The breeder told us to always give him hugs and socialize as much as we can so he won’t be as aggressive. Now he’s all grown up and loves his family very much but hates strangers. He’s the perfect guard dog and we love him very much. Oh and what’s funny is he was easier to train than our golden retriever and he is so much smarter

My chow chow is 6months old right now. I can agree that chows has this aggressive side, but if they're properly trained and given love then they're a fluffy, cuddly and sweet dog underneath that aggressive demeanor. He's good to my pet cat Jioue and he has never bitten any of our visitors nor any family member. He's a sweet dog.

My chow was the first dog I ever had. Got him about a year and a half after I moved out of my parents house. He was the most gentle dog ever. Stubborn yes, but still so easy to train. The fact that they hate being dirty made him very easy to housetrain too. The only things I struggled a bit with was getting him to walk properly on a leash, and to call him back. He listened when he wanted to 😂😅 The leash part did go very great for a while. I took him to a trainer so I could learn some techniques, and it actually worked. BUT.... Then he tore his ACL when he was two... And we couldn't take proper walks for nearly a year after that. So all the progress we made went away, and then he just didn't want to learn it again.. Sometimes he was great on walks, and others he was a complete nightmare. He ignored pretty much all other dogs and was very neutral when it came to that. But if he saw a rabbit or something that ran away from him, he actually cried if he wasn't allowed to follow 😂 He was kinda scared of people, and his first instinct was to run away or hide. He really was all bark and no bite. When people came to our home, he followed them around barking for like 5 minutes, so that wasn't very fun. But then he was chill, keeping his distance. But when he had met someone a few times, they became besties. I always said that when you were allowed access to touch the ears, you were friends for life. Once they could do that, he never barked at you again, and you could instantly pet him with no hesitation from his part. Vets absolutely loved him, and he always loved them the instant they met. It was always so wonderful to see. Same with our groomer. They were just instantly accepted, and they all said that he was the kindest chow they had ever met. Which was very good, because he met a lot of vets... Sadly, I had to put him to sleep just two months before his 5th birthday.. He suffered an acute spinal hernia, and within two hours he went from walking normally to being paralyzed from under his shoulder blades down.. By the time we got to a vet (it was a sunday afternoon), it had progressed to not only loosing mobility, but also all feeling. His hindlegs had also stippened up, and the part of the back that he did feel was so painful that not even morphine could help.. It was to the point where surgery wouldn't have helped either. So I had no choice but to let him go... I'm writing all of this now, because yesterday was exactly 5 years since his passing, and I still miss him so much.. But if that had never happened, he probably would be gone by now anyways. It's just sad that we didn't get to have those later years together.. If anyone has taken the time to read this, I really appreciate you. And I know that Teddy would've too ❤ Teddy always knew that I was anxious before I knew myself, and he always tried to distract me when it started. But he also felt when someone else tried to help me, and then he would thank them with a buff of his head and a kiss, no matter if he knew them or not. So that love is what Im sending to you. I truly hope you will have an amazing day ❤

They're THE BEST! I bred them to sell for 10 + years. Never met a mean natured one. They can be a tad high-strung but proper handling can resolve. I love the breed & I must add...THESE ANIMALS ARE STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! They can be very gentle. I had a female with pups adopt kittens nursing them & grooming them lovingly as her very own.

@@IHope-ef1dn I love Chows too, and I agree they can be very good natured dogs. One of my friends has two Chows and they are both sweet and well behaved. As a vet tech I gotta say though that I've seen a lot of poorly trained/socialized Chows that have awful temperaments, very aggressive. Like any dog they need to be trained properly, as I'm sure you know. I think people assume because they're so cute and fluffy they will be easy to train and socialize, and they aren't. Like any big breed they need a lot of time and effort.

My best friend is a Chow,he might not seem to be very affecionate but is lovable and very loyal. He did save my life after I fainted in a bathroom and he still takes a spot near the door whenever I go to there (doesn't really matter where is it, I took him to my friends place and then he would wait for me to get out of their bathroom). He's 4 years old,never seen any signs of agression- but he's not comfortable around children that much I can tell.
