I'm an old guy that has been enjoying Rock, Hard Rock and Metal my entire life and I'm not really into this making comment thing. But I would like to point out that the 1960's Hippie Era are baby boomers who were born (1945-1959) . Those born in (1960-197? - There's some debate in Soc. circles) are part of Generation X and many were teens in during the 1970's. Gen X saw the rise of the early Punk and New Wave era in the mid 70's. So, no Hippies in Gen X because that was long over by the mid 1970's. Enjoy your journey and best to you Both.

Sorry but the post-war Baby Boom was well documented to last into 1964. Your use of 1959 is a convenient and memorable cut-off date (since it coincides with the ending of a decade), but its not historically or statistically accurate. The post-war birth rate in the United States did not fall to (or lower than) the pre-war birth rate until 1964 and thereafter. And the higher birth rate than that of the pre-war norms is, by definition, the "baby boom".

The three main songs on the animals album, Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep, are representative of types of classes in society.
@HollowGolem
@HollowGolem 4 жыл бұрын
Specifically the pigs are the capitalist class who get wealthy by leeching off the labor of others, the dogs are the working class enforcers, who betray their fellow proles by doing the bidding of the pigs for table scraps, and the sheep are the rest of the proles, preyed on by the dogs and outnumbering both other groups, but so complacent they never do anything about it and can't take advantage of their numerical advantage.

@@waynedome5469 Not really that simple. There are plenty of people who "have" but have worked their asses off for it. The issue are the people who barely do any work, but by lending money to start-up companies, or owning land/a building, leech value from the work of others. Even Adam Smith, whom many consider the father of capitalism, called the rent-seekers parasites. But they run everything. Because they've accumulated enough wealth that they just buy out enough people to nullify their numerical disadvantage. They're the pigs, the people they buy out are the dogs, and the rest of us are the sheep in this album.

Asked in a 2017 Uncut interview what his view on Animals is now, Walters replied: "It's a sketch, a sort of cartoon sketch of how I saw the way society was organized. And obviously it leans heavily on Orwell and Animal Farm and the idea of anthropomorphizing animals to represent aspects of human behavior. That round at the end of 'Dogs' is, I think, very powerful and quite chilling. 'Dragged down by the stone' is the last line of it. 'He was told what to do by the man...' It's a bitter reclamation against authoritarianism and against what I perceived when I was growing up
@HollowGolem
@HollowGolem 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the whole allegory kind of requires all three songs to make sense. The dogs are the aggressors, the tools of the pigs who use violence and cunning to screw the sheep and each other over, to keep the infighting in the lower classes happening while the pigs live happily off the backs of the working classes. The dogs are every bit as much a victim as the sheep, even as they're tricked into victimizing their fellows ("sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used") and eventually, they're just drowned with a stone once they're not useful to the pigs anymore. THe dogs are the police, the patriots, the propagandizing newsmen, writers, and teachers. They're class traitors who scab and undermine labor movements. They betray their own interests in the hope of table scraps from their "masters," who are only masters because the dogs protect them. You see SO much of the attitude in this song ("you believe at heart everyone's a killer," "no one has a real friend,") in the behavior of politicians, especially center-right and right-wing politicians. Basically, because they have a pessimistic view of human nature, they create an environment where everyone ELSE has to have that view, because they fulfil their own prophecy about the brutal, cut-throat nature of zero-sum social activity.

I appreciate what Vin is trying to say when comparing the "We're just animals" world view to a lion eating a gazelle but the comparison isn't quite correct. The morality derived from an animalistic view of humans is the morality of the pack. Killing a gazelle is like slaughtering livestock, murder is more akin to if a lion went and killed another lion in their pack which in the animal world is also generally frowned upon. And while two different packs of lions might fight each other that is similar to war. As humans we protect those around us and we attack those that are different which is a very similar morality to animals. We are a tribe/pack based animal. But that's just my two cents.

I would argue that animals especially pack animals have established views on what is right and what is wrong creating a moral framework for them thus by definition making them moral agents. And what I believe is that since humans are merely intelligent animals we can compare ourselves to animals around us to see where our own moral framework may have evolved from.

Sori, the Stone part was intentional. In UK, people used to put dogs down by tying them to a stone and through them in the ocean. Hence the song name “Dogs” and the echo of stone turns into howling of a dog. The song also combines 4 genre of music. Blues Rock, Alt Rock, Prog Rock & Experimental Rock. It’s a masterpiece and many considered this as Pink Floyd’s magnum opus.

I love this song. It paints a perfect picture of the predators in our society. The con men, the sales men, those who would get ahead in spite of all the suffering they cause. But the reason it's so great is that it shines a little light on how those people were conditioned to be that way. They don't think they are monsters. They are following a rule book in a system that is designed to use them. The sad part is that the eventual suffering comes down on them ten fold and they are left wondering where it all went wrong.

it's funny how you people actually pay these guys to react to exceptionally good music, if anything, they should be paying you guys for introducing them to good music. That too Dogs from Floyd, I hope you get the irony.

I see this song as a metaphor for life. Lying and cheating people i.e. treating people badly builds up over the years and as you get older how you've treated people reflects back on you - no friends, hence "all alone and dying of cancer". The stone represents the burden you've created over the course of your life.

Nice one u guys, enjoyed the debate & analysis. A pink floyd masterpiece & my favourite PF song, despite being a somewhat uncomfortable listen. All the more remarkable! I understand Sori struggling with it. I too found it very difficult when i first heard it. I know all their songs now, the great & the beautiful.. but Dogs is my favourite.....

This is my favorite break down so far. Not just cause of the song. I was genuinely invested in the conversation. I love the song, but at some point I forgot that the song was the point of the video. You had a conversation about life, people, morality, and I loved it. Left me thinking, I learned from it, and it had me questioning some of my own beliefs haha. Very intriguing stuff, well done.

Even though I take Pink Floyd's music seriously, it is so hard for me not to think of that hysterical scene from "WKRP in Cincinnati" when Arthur Carlson walks in on Johnny Fever as he is playing the section when the dogs are barking. Such a classic show. That clip is worth searching for on YT.

I've been waiting for your reaction to this track for ages! The Animals album concept was loosely based on George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, the album's lyrics describe various classes in society as different kinds of animals: the predatory dogs, the despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning herd" of sheep. Whereas the novella focuses on bolshevism, the album is a critique of capitalism and differs again in that the sheep eventually rise up to overpower the dogs. The album was developed from a collection of unrelated songs into a concept which, in the words of author Glenn Povey, "described the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of mere animals".

This song was supposed to be on the WYWH album. At the time it was called "You've Got To Be Crazy". Roger nixed that and refashioned the song along with "Raving and Drooling" ("Sheep"), into the concept album that is the Animals album. Yep, This was a take off from Orwells, Animal Farm. When a dog's usefulness is done, Jones ties a brick around their neck and drowns them in the nearest pond.

The irony here is that you view everything in a very binary way as you try to force everyone into your rigid categories. You have the capacity to do better but you persistently default back to your religious frames and your isms. I'm an atheist and my values are not far different than yours yet, you pat yourself on the back as you credit your religion, and yourself by association as the source of all moral wisdom. Atheists are at least as moral as any religious group, including yours.
