Vin you nailed it when you said "no one is on their level.", midway through the reaction. No one was. Save perhaps Tool, no one ever has been. Can you find other individuals in music you might say are more musically talented? Sure. It's personal preference after all. Can you find other bands or individuals who might create more poignant lyrics or have a better stage performance? Same answer. But can you find another band that cranks out Music, Lyrics and Performance at that level and for that long? Try. I mean, good luck. This is a 23 minute song. There is no second song. You just listened to half of it. Who else is pulling that off? In 1971 no less. Just crazy when you consider what other music was being produced in 1971. They literally are their own musical genre`. To answer a couple of your questions, this performance was actually part of a documentary about the band. There were several songs and band interviews as part of the documentary. I bought it years ago. It's great. Filmed in Pompeii, Italy (whispers of tax reasons were behind it being moved from London) and because it's just a really cool idea to film there in front of no one outdoors in an auditorium like that. This song is just about human interaction and connection. Roger Waters was a great songwriter. The rest of the songs on the "Wish you were Here" album you will really enjoy lyrically. This one lyrically is pretty obscure but as they went on, his lyrics became much more cynical and sophisticated. Oh and yes... vocal and musical style was copied heavily. Have you listened to Queensryche? It's basically theft. The guitar sound is just David Gilmour. The guy's just a genius. The most emotive guitar player to ever play I think. If you start looking at the body of work and consider what he's done here and on some of the songs you've reacted to.... the solo on "Time", "Comfortably Numb", "High Hopes", "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" etc. He even managed to make "Breathe" sound like a lullaby as the song lyrics were written as a dialogue of parent to child. He's just brilliant. Underrated. But a Legend to those who know. Wait until you hear "On the turning away". Solo at the end gets a tear almost every time from me,

@Al Bradley You seriously think Vin knows anything about music itself? Anything at all? He's "just making money" here, dude. Keep that in mind. He has 8 kids already (no abortions yet) and the wife sure looks chubby af and most importantly, both of them have been consumed by greed. I think they teach their kids the same too (as they're "home-schooled"). So yeah, he is as dumb as my 6 year-old niece who believes Ariana Grande is a legend.

I see that you didn't realize one thing: Pompeii was a wealthy ancient Roman city, but 2000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the city under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ashes. Largely preserved under the ash, the excavated city offers a unique snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried, and an extraordinarily detailed insight into the everyday life of its inhabitants. If you search for images of the city, you will notice citizens frozen in position, like statues, under a layer of ash. And this show was performed there, with no audience, because all the souls of the citizens were there, with their bodies frozen in time.

I'm probably projecting way too much, but I always felt that playing in an empty amphitheater in Pompeii, a thousand years after that eruption was also a way to bring out the echoes of a distant time. It has a final verse & chorus: Cloudless every day you fall Upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky Vin is right, Meddle was 2 years before Dark Side of the Moon, with another album Obscured By Clouds following it and preceding Dark Side.

This film is the definition of magic and perfection. You must see the whole thing, or at least part 2 of Echoes. The also show clips of the making of Dark Side. The line up is what most people think of as Pink Floyd - their original bass player, but with Dave replacing there original singer. There is no one in arena and that was the point. They are the first band (entertainment) to play in the arena in 2000 years. It was their answer to all the big concert films that were being release in that time. Rodger Waters was (or is still) suing the Phantom of the Opera for gleaning that progression. If you do watch it, watch the original film. There is a newer edit that has lots of space stuff in it which I think detracts from the music. I have seen Floyd 8 times, with and without Rodgers, and this is still the greatest performance. I thank God every time I watch it that it was made.

You just saw a rare video (via a proper "film" crew) and view of the original lineup (post Syd Barrett), just the band jamming with no accompaniments, four guys doing genius musical things. David Gilmour (guitar, vocals) Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals) Rodger Waters (bass guitar) NIck Mason (drums) Pompeii is a roman ruin and at the time probably couldn't handle a crowd. Since then modern Pink Floyd was able to host a full concert there as well as a David Gilmour show where only people were only able to fill the arena floor, the venue probably has been restored to a point to have this happen.

The Floyd's history has always been about the music and not them. They generally do not appear on their album cover art (except Ummagumma where they are effectively on display individually in the construction of the album). Here, they play in an amphitheater to no one. From their first days they developed their light show as something to hide behind. And then The Wall where they used a surrogate band and hid behind a wall. This movie, Live At Pompeii, was really the first time an audience got to see the band playing at a venue and in the studio. My understanding of the song and I think I have heard Roger use the term "empathy", i.e., connecting with others, which is an idea that runs through all of of the post-Meddle albums.

@@rurysaurus At the beginning, the song talks about evolution and how we all come from "something" that became alive, and started to move and tried to climb towards the light. So, if everyone comes from that "something", everyone is that "something", and if I see you, I'm seeing that "something", and if I'm seeing that "something", I'm seeing everyone, including me. Basically, it says that all humans are just one; I am me and I am also you; it calls for empathy, to better understand and help each other, since we all come from the same place, we are equal. I hope it helps, it's hard for me to put my thoughts into words. Loved vin saying nobody is on their level, nobody Ofcourse it's in the eye of the beholder but if these guys take one thing from this entire journey of the channel and the village and all the new music I hope the biggest takeaway has been the fact that Floyd is now a part of their being, once it goes in it'll never come back out And to think you may have gone through life never even knowing they existed!

saw them a couple of times on the '89 tour. Momentary Lapse of Reason was the album they were touring (without Waters, after the legal battles I think). I forget which show it was, but me and the friends I was with dropped a tab, and went in. We were sitting on the floor some rows back. Things were starting to kick in, and the lights went down. Audience started getting quiet and the first "PING" hit...and in my section it went dead quiet...the second "PING" and a guy two rows in front of me got up and said "Boys and girls, buckle up!! It's gonna be a bumpy ride!" I got lost in the music after that. Still to this day I can not believe they opened a show with this song, but it was a fantastic show and one of the best trips I ever had.

Hello friends, if you liked this video, then then you have to see a band from our country, Chile, called LOS JAIVAS, band Rock Progressive , and Latinoamerican Folklore ,the song "La Poderosa Muerte" that, like Pink Floyd, recorded in the Ruins of Pompeii, they did it. made in the Heights of Machu Pichu, published in 1981, based on a great Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature .... Greetings from Chile

when you got the lucky to produce your music without a label pushing and pushing, we get bands like pink floyd they dont followed any trend they invented his own sound, and most of all they in his 20s create music so mature, only with aged we understand the meaning of it, thats amazing!!!! and is the only band whom sound better live than the original record and never play the same so year after year we never heard the same song, i love it

The album Meddle is awesome. You can hear them almost becoming what they are about to become. It is post Syd leaving the band when they were still trying to figure out what they were without him. This album marks the last stop of their slightly disjointed cohesion before their sound exploded into dark side of the moon and became solidified as what we really know them for today.

This is only part one you listened to. It is 1972. It is a movie of a live performance and it is awesome. They did not lose anybody to drugs. The guitarist from their firs album got mental problems and left. In 1983 bassist Roger Waters left. It was a bitter divorce with many lawsuits.

It was only Part one of Echoes in Pompei, you need to react to Part two. The lineup is the same as for many years to come: Richard Wright on keyboards and vocal, Roger Waters on bass (and also on vocals, but not in this song), Nick Mason on drums and David Gilmour on guitar and vocals. :-)

If you watch Gilmours " live At Pompeii" double DVD. they show a tunnel inside the Amphitheatre dedicated to this video. That concert ( 42 yrs. later ) Gilmour said was very special to him. I believe that this was his last concert. Only one song from the past played this time ( one of these days)

Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples in Italy, has erupted more than 50 times. Its most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D., when the volcano buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. Pink Floyd didn't want a 'crowd' there (I presume you mean an audience) because they wanted to evoke atmosphere etc.

You have to watch the whole film Pink floyd at Pompeii and perhaps you will see that each of the songs have a very specific meaning in the movie. A good part of the film was recorded at the solfatara a part of an active volcano (super volcano) called Campi flegeri. Dark side of the moon was released a year later in 1973, at pompeii it came out in 1972.

There are several bands who sound musically and vocally (specifically David Gilmour) in parts like Pink Floyd. E.g., Mostly Autumn, RPWL. Both bands admit to being influenced by Floyd, though they do have their own style that is apparent from extended listening.

Wow it's pretty awesome that I actually watch this video and you guys have pretty much just made this video! I have not stopped listening to your comments post video but from what I've heard let me clue you in on a couple of things! The drug member that you spoke of Vin was Syd Barrett! By the time this video was made Syd was already out of the band because of a mental breakdown due to too much LSD! The vocal style that you are speaking of is actually a two-part harmony with David Gilmour doing the low Harmony and Richard Wright does the high harmony! I believe in Wikipedia or somewhere I've heard it described where at a concert somewhere down the line they switched and Gilmore did the high and Wright did the low!! Feel privileged that you have at least a chance to see recorded versions of this song live because once Rick Wright passed away David Gilmour never performed the song live again! He said they had such a connection, especially in this song, that he could not do it again without his partner!! Truly one of the best pieces of music ever to be recorded by a human!! Do it justice and listen to Part 2 also!!

Just Nothing Like It, David Gilmore - guitarist par excellence. Just Nothing Like it - Pink Floyd live experience. Just Nothing like it - Roger Waters the best lyricists. Roger Waters wrote this song after reading a poetry of Pakistani 🇵🇰 revolutionary poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Echoes directly took the inspiration from Allama’s poem called “Two Planet”. Roger also said that they were criticised for songs related to space so he changed the imagery to next level beautiful underwater scene.

Hope you guys read this, as it is so long after you did this reaction. The reason there is no crowd is because at that time in history (1972) quite a few bands were putting out movies of their shows, or sometimes their whole tour with songs from various cities in the movie. Pink Floyd decided to do a live show with no crowd in the uncovered ruins at Pompeii. There actually were a few spectators, some kids were allowed to sit up those exit tunnels, as long as they stayed out of camera, they could stay!! LUCKY KIDS!!!! Besides, could you imagine what a crowd would have done to that amphitheatre if they had been allowed in?
