Environmental stimuli has been the BANE of my existence with my dog. You are absolutely right, of course. I will say, though, that this is all slightly discouraging and makes me feel as if it would be impossible for me to raise a properly trained dog in the place where I live and with my household constellation. Still, I'll keep on keeping on in faith that one day, we will get there. Amen. HAHAHA! (Almost 3 yr old Irish Setter, 4 kids, central Europe, big city suburb.)

Ty Susan! Zeke is one of two puppies in his litter that are environmentally driven! Linking all the information together has been so helpful! I knew I was building layers, but it’s so easy to become discouraged and not to compare littermates as well! This has been encouraging and given me hope that things will work together, and I just have to be patient. He is doing amazing and I have to remind myself of how far we have come! To rethink my strategy if necessary, especially during the off days, and not give up on him or us! Hugs! By the way, love you, your coaches and all your programs! I have been a member of Recallers for a year. My border is 3 1/2 years old. The power of the environments has been one that I continually battle. Thank you for reminding us that we need to go the pace of the dog and not my expectations due to their age. I know my dog has mastered many many skills indoors. That is a celebration! I know he can do those many many skills in our yard (most of the time). I still need the patience to grow his skills in other environments. Prey drive for anything moving quickly is our biggest challenge.

Another fantastic podcast. I think they just keep getting better! How is that even possible? Thanks so much Susan, the great thing about your online classes is not only do they 'work', but the love and respect between you and your dog increases. You see them so much differently, and they seem to look at you differently (well, I think mine does anyway)!

I am only a few weeks into HSTD. I have a lot of environment hurdles to get over. However, this episode has complete flipped my perspective on "My puppy wants to play with me all the time." I felt like he saw me as another one of his toys. I was sad he would sometimes cuddle with my husband but always wants to play with me. Watching this video made me realize I established value for myself early on without realizing what I was doing. He wants to play with me and wants me to go outside with him because the value is in me! Wow 😮

OMG!! Perfect timing for this content. Because my dog is driving me stark raving cuckoo bananas today! She keeps whining to go out as if she needs to potty. She doesn't. She's really just bored and it's sunny outside. She wants me to take her out - All Freaking Day. 🤣

Pamela, at 1.5, was still terrible on leash. In the last 3-6 months, she has made massive massive improvements because of 2 things. 1) Susans Reinforcement zone training (throwing a treat behind you) And 2) using the sniffing she wanted to do as reinforcement. You seem to smell something? Ok, come here. Do x, y, z, and ‘go sniff’ We are still working on that sniff cue. I need to teach her how to ask in a way that isn’t lunging, and I need to stop letting her sniff everything every time!

yes I had to stop Barn Hunt with my Samoyed because of how they were set up. The start cue was supposed to be us unclipping the leash, which led to him hunting on every walk as soon as I unclipped the leash

This is a controversial one! I gotta be honest: ever since I introduced "itsyerchoice" and got rid of saying "stay", I was actually surprised to see that my dog waited for permission to eat something off the floor. I didn't train that, it just happened and it's become a pattern now. It's amazing how things build on each other and we don't even realize it!

I have a 7 month old BC who I I trusted off leash too early and ended up on a 45 minute hunt for her in the woods ( I thought her recall to that point had been pretty solid). I was definitely not more exciting than the environment! Back to long line hiking again but I'm now battling my own fear of her taking off her...ugh.

Excellent podcast, thank you, I have listened to all of yours. I do not understand the comment toward the end that if you were playing retrieve with a puppy in the living room and he stoped to sniff before completing the retrieve You might put a bowl of food or scatter food at that spot to invoke it’s your choice. Is the idea that by making the choice more obvious, with food, something that you’ve practiced, the puppy will not stop at the bowl or at the scatter? Similar question on going for a walk and teaching the puppy not to eat things on the ground only to sniff, again because if it’s your choice training, how do you generalize it’s your choice to that situation? I think I would like a broadcast on various applications of it’s your choice. Yes I have used your it’s your choice training for the last 10 years from my agility dogs and it’s great. I also use your crate games and I used your recallers protocol, handling 360, etc. Still have these questions regarding application, thank you

Hi Susan, I have a dog who has high anxiety due to some trauma as a small puppy. I have found your videos really helpful and am already practicing. The hardest place for him to practice is in the front of the house, as traffic noises trigger his anxiety. I will keep trying to see if I can eventually "neutrualize" this environment. He is very smart and a quick learner but to be honest, the environment often wins, especially outside.

How do you have a break if you don't let the puppy play outside in the yard?

Thank you for so many aha moments ! I am a HSYD student, (yes we humans and dogs are students) who is having an issue with counter surfing !! I don’t understand how IYC helps with the counter when the game treats are on the floor ? My bloodhound loves IYC, however he is still super curious about what he might find on the counter or in the sink ! What am I missing ??

I recently watched a video by a very experienced popular trainer who was teaching the dog to leave things alone on the ground. He had to yank dogs neck over and over with the leash and the dog still was not leaving the dropped food alone. I just thought why doesn’t he just cover the food over with his foot and let the dog work it out. It seems so obvious now. I’m so glad I’ve never done that to my dog.

Oh no. I let my girls lick the dishwasher dirty dishes and they lick the floor if anything I drop and try to counter surf, thankfully, they don’t jump up into the counters completely but just their paws and get into the trash. I’m guessing, I’ll have to keep them out of the kitchen to stop that 😬🤦🏻‍♀️. I had no idea, that’s what leads to other behaviors but now I do. Oops lol. Thanks Susan for a much needed video podcast. How would you do the outside with 4 dogs in a fenced in yard, and what do you do if they do get into something they shouldn’t? I’ve always just let them free in the yard to play on their own but they do dig holes and get into what they shouldn’t. I’m not able to leash four dogs at a time so any suggestions on four dogs interacting in the yard with me?

Dealing with this and my bird who has become a food source for my puppy. The bird (African Grey) will intentionally throw his food out of his cage to get attention and as soon as the puppy hears this he runs to the cage. I have a small home and I have no way to isolate the bird.

Never written a comment before, although it’s more of a question. Just rescued two that seem to be staffordshire terroirs x jack russel mix’s, that are 6 month old siblings. And no I wasn’t prepared. My question is am I supposed to not introduce them into environments until they’re ready, so that the bad behavior is not reinforced? And how should I go about training them both?

I'm a little confused. In one of your podcasts you mention dogs need minimum 2 x 20min walk preferably one off leash. And then I this podcast you say they aren't allowed in the backyard unless they are with you so the reinforcement comes from you. Does this mean the off lead exercise doesn't come until after the basics are installed?

My dog always wants to eat stuff off the ground, especially outside. Will giving him a high value treat instead get him to not do this, or would it in effect reinforce it in the long-term? For example I had to stop doing the positive interrupter because I found it was reinforcing his getting distracted. He started purposely doing things like putting his front paws on the counter in order to get the treat that came with the positive interrupter and I was unable to phase out the treat. The word would not work by itself even after several weeks.

I didn't understand the part where she said put cookies where the dog sniffed. Are they supposed to eat the treats or ignore them??

My 10 month old cattle dog terrier mix has an intense prey drive. Especially for bunnies. I was thinking that I should do prey drive games with her to help give her that release. Is this not a good idea?? And when I walk with her on a long line I allow her time to sniff then she seems to respond after a moment of sniffs. Am I doing really bad allowing her to do this? Love your advice!! Thanks for being you.

Have a question my foster pittie got thrown out because she was the problem child.. i know this and i feel it when we are in dog training classes she wants to be involved with the fight... so i cant logically give her treats for for being around other dogs (desensitizing) but knowing she wants to fight..btw this is one of the best foster female pits ive had contact with, most i give up ..Don't know if training classes are making her worse rather than better.. dont want her hurting my kids dogs if they visit...

Okay, I will just have to ask.. what about sighthounds? My eight month old whippet puppy was extremely observant of his environment from the day he came home at eight weeks. In order for him not to get reinforcement from being outside, I'd have to put a blindfold on him! It's all good though, we have a great relationship even if I'm not more exciting than a random leaf blowing by.

Any suggestion when having two intact dogs and the female is in heat and been removed BUT the male is still unable to focus and won’t take treats(won’t eat anything) Should I just table training during this time?

Wait, does that mean that my dog shouldn't be allowed to go on long sniffing (decompressing) walks outside, because that means I'm allowing the environment to reinforce him? And that when he's distracted by a smell or another dog, that I can't and shouldn't ask for any behaviours such as recall? This is a bit confusing to me! Surely there must be a way for you to recall your dog away from a smell or another dog, withouth needing to lower the value of their surroundings first.

Lola My 1.5 year old Bernedoodle has a few faults. MY faults I'm sure but we are working daily on them. 1. she is still way too rough on my old cocker Mattie. 2. she has been jumping on me way too much especially when we are outside. Based on your good advice I want to slowly eliminate treats as lures. I have a fulltime job so that limits my time with her during the day. When I get home, I have been working on having some quiet time for her before we start doing the fun training things. She still is overly exuberant. What should my most urgent focus be?

Susan I was right with you until you started introducing environment in the house. I got lost there.
