The Great Pyrenees is a large, thickly coated, and immensely powerful working dog bred to deter sheep-stealing wolves and other predators on snowy mountaintops. Pyrs today are mellow companions and vigilant guardians of home and family. The breed comes from the French side of the Pyrenees Mountains that separate France and Spain.

I've had four Pyrs. One time a neighbor called, and told me she thought one of them had died. It was 24 degrees and snowing, he was lying on the ground, covered with snow, and not moving. I went out and called him, and he didn't move. I called him again and he slowly stood up, his fur frozen to the ground. He shook himself, and looked at me like, "Why are you bothering me?"

OK, I"m jealous. It took six months to potty train my Great Pyrenees and at a year, he still has accidents once in a while. This was mainly because he is so smart and got the message wrong. He would see that after he peed on the floor, I would get upset and then get paper towels and cleaner and clean up the mess. So, he understood that the way this was supposed to work is, Pee on the floor, go get the paper towels and tear them up all over the puddle and grab any kind of cleaner and poke a hole with your teeth, and put it on top. He did this over and over. He even figured out how to open the cupboards to get the cleaning supplies and if he couldn't get to the paper towels, toilet paper was the substitute. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE! He has finally figured out that going outside is easier, makes mom happy, and way less work with the cleaning ritual. lol

I’m a senior who dog/home sits. I have a client with three of these utterly amazing dogs. They are nocturnal and go on duty from dusk to dawn. They outweigh me and I am charged to walk them daily. At first I was scared but it was as if they knew I was older and they soon became mindful of my need to walk slowly and carefully. At night, they lay across the threshold of whatever room I was in. If I went outside, they surrounded me in protection. Majestic creatures. We should be humble they chose to help us.

My daughter is a geriatric nurse and took her GP to work everyday when she worked in a senior care facility. The residents loved Cooper. On evening shift she would come home later in the evening. Before settling for the night Cooper would makes his rounds in all the children's bedrooms, have a drink of water , put his head under her bed and go to sleep. If any of the children were sick he would sleep in their rooms till they had recovered. He was the bestest boy ever. He died at a ripe old age and we miss him dearly❤

I'm a big cat person. Asleep with my cat on my bed I got two of them. I took in this big dog.. She's mostly great pyrenees. But she doesn't have the long fur. I was worried how she'd get along with the cats, but she turned out to be one of the nicest creatures you could find. She sleeps on the carpet and the cat sleeps on the couch and they're all friends. And she's not just a winnie she chased a bear into the woods. I thought she wasn't gonna come back in one piece. So far I had the dog for about a week

Generally accurate information, however, Pyrs LOVE to dig holes and bark alot, often at night. Furthermore they are escape artists. Dig under a fence, climb a gate, go through a fence etc. Therefore it is a critical to have a well built enclosure to keep them from harm. Leave a Pyr unattended outside an enclosure it will wander off. It may happen in a minute or 10 to 20 minutes but it will leave and can travel several kilometers guarding what it considers to be its territory. I've watched a few videos and the above characteristics were not mentioned. These dog have to be walked on a lead as they have a low prey drive. This means they will not play fetch. Daily 45 minute brisk walks are sufficient or let them wander in a safe off lead dog park. They LOVE having their ears scratched. Very affectionate dogs, cuddle buddies etc. Nice dogs but you have to know what you are dealing with before owning a Great Pyrenees.

Having owned and loved GP's for over 30 years have to say not a bad intro to the dogs. Just a word on training. Training can be a PITA - but if you are persistent it really is quite amazing what you can accomplish given the breeds hard headiness. Just don’t expect the obedience you can get on-leash to continue once the leash is removed. You can get them to ‘come’ and do a few other things off leash - but it really boils down to if they think it will benefit them. I guess the best way to put it is simply this - if you want a canine companion that will play ‘catch’ - a Pry is not for you. The best way to put it is simply - a Pry will just look at you and let you know that you threw it and you can go get it

I’m looking at a GP mix now, and grew up with a Bassett/Bloodhound mix. It sounds like overall temperament is pretty similar, and feel like if I can handle that stubborn of a mix a GP will probably be okay. It took a lot for us to get our hound to stop breaking his chain and going off in the woods to track and herd animals. We got there tho, and he was an awesome dog! Are there some specific things that might be helpful to note that you’ve seen when working with them, both positives or stubborn? 😂
@citroenfan8930

@@Karla_wthaK - Have had one mix - an Australian Shepard/Pyr mix - temperament, thou, was just like my other Pyrs. As a breed they are very affectionate and given their size hard not to ignore, and when they have had enough they just walk away :). They will wander - a lot - if given the opportunity. Need moderate amount of exercise each day. Training to 'sit', come, stay, etc. requires a bit of work - but pays dividends. The real thing, I mean real, is that the dog was socialized as a pub. If not, you will have a real handful. Non socialized ones will chase anything that is not in their 'flock' if it intrudes into their 'territory' regardless if it poses a threat or not and is almost impossible to change. However, giving all of that, it would hard to find another breed that is as loyal and loving as Pyrs.
@Karla_wthaK
@Karla_wthaK 2 ай бұрын
@@citroenfan8930 thank you! That’s helpful, thankfully this mix I’m looking at has had a lot of socializing already despite being a rescue, and is part of what made me decide looking more at him. He’s listed as being good with animals and cats especially (and we got an old curmudgeon cat) so that’s a must 😂 But, sounds more like his rescue was due to his size than behavior. Mix is lab and GP, & foster says he’s definitely the temperament of the GP than anything else and really laid back. But, want to keep learning to prepare and make sure we can provide what this dog would need also especially in his transition into our home if it keeps going well!!

Our Pyr Nick only drools when food is involved. It took us two years to train ours to come inside at night because they are so nocturnal. We didn’t know what a Pyrenees was until we got him. We did a lot of positive reinforcement training classes, which he loved. He’s a great dog and such a sweet personality. Make sure you start training the moment you get a Pyrenees so you establish who’s in charge. They think independently so you need to understand what kind of dog you are getting.

Some more than others. The looser the lips,the more they will drool. I've convinced the children in my neighborhood that if they get drool on them they'll get an A on their next test. Now,instead of saying "gross dog drool!" they say " cool lucky doggie drool!".they frequently do very well on their tests too!

I live in an apartment (outside the city but still pretty close and in more of an "urban" setting, but still, nestled away from most of the commotion. There's lots of land across the street (for now) and the best dog park ever .5 miles down the road. Anyone with experience with this breed...do you think Pyr's can live a happy life in an apartment setting? My apartment isn't anything crazy, but it is a really nice, big wide open warehouse type loft. I know this breed is more of "i'll dig a hole and lay in the dirt", but I do thing a wide open room with tall ceilings could be a sort of "comfort" space. I am concerned about the breeds tendency to bark or always feel the need to "patrol". It's not loud here but for sure a livestock/guardian type breed would notice more than your lab. If I went this route I'd for sure get a young dog or puppy. Socialize, go to the dog park and aware of all the surroundings. Would that work? My biggest fear is committing and then everything is completely wrong. Obviously that's worst case scenario...I had no issues whatsoever with my Staffordshire terrier but comparing them online it's so different! I wouldn't call myself a dog "trainer" but I'm really good with dogs and keen to catch up on whatever they're putting down. My staff was the neediest (and best) dog ever, I can't imagine another breed being so hands-on needy 24/7 haha. If you have or have owned a Great Pyrenees can you please share your opinions and thoughts!!! good or bad, just wanna hear real peoples experiences lol. Another main factor is that every time I search online or look at Craiglist the "livestock" or farm dogs pop up the most! I've contemplating adopting local or fostering again, but I'd really like a buddy right from the start! Thanks all!!!

Pyrs are great and you *could* get one that you can train well but it’s also a pretty big risk with these dogs because they are VERY stubborn and only really do things they want to do so it’s likely you will get a dog that never wants to do certain activities or commands 🤷🏼‍♀️ it took me 6 months to train mine to wear a harness and he won’t even walk in my neighborhood, only at parks or trails that aren’t near our house. He stops at the same spot every time and it’s right at the point where we can’t see our place anymore. He’s just a natural guard dog. Lol. Mine did come to me with trauma, neglect, and physical issues as a 4month old, and I also was told he was a border collie which is the same as my other dogs so it’s been a little harder for me adjusting as I go and learning about him and his main breed as I figured out what that even was. I will say, I LOVE this boy so much but my main thought with raising him is always “I need land”. Besides that, he’s my dog who does not chew, he potty trained easily, he’s SO snuggly, he literally thinks he’s a lap dog at 120lbs, and he’s so playful with my other dogs. lol. He’s also very talkative/expressive and has the cutest voice. I really do love him so much. I think his special personality and the work I’ve put in with him makes our bond even tighter.

Do any of your Pyrenees growl at you when they don't want to do something? If I try to move him when he doesn't want to, he will give me a dirty look and growl, I just say to him laughingly, Oh you're going to tell me off? and continue moving him, but it sure sounds scary.

Our 10 month old male, Toby was easy to potty train, as well, until he hit puberty! Then he began marking in the house, and as much as we tried taking him outside more often, he'd still do it. The vet says it should lessen once he's neutered, but he's too young! So now he has to wear a belly band (like a wraparound diaper) whenever he comes inside. We just hope this bad habit isn't too ingrained and will go away once he's neutered!

@Darcy The breeder and the vet tell me that Great Pyrenese (as Toby is), as well as other large breeds, should not be neutered as young as smaller breeds. The resulting lack of hormones can damage the growth plates in his joints, either affecting his mature height, his skeletal structure (strong ligaments and bones), and potential for cancer. The larger the breed, the longer the wait for full skeletal development. So, on the advice of experts, we wait for another few months.

How he knocks the wife over and ruins down the his where theirs another boy doing boy things to each other. Nothing can fall to the floor because he’ll eat it. Belchers all the time even in your face. He farts loudly. I think his last owner did something to him cause he screams like a banshee if he gets wet. He use to scream when we put a leash on him. Always has to have the last word. Tell him to stop barking has to get that last bark out. Is great guard dog. Wife came home at night and he barked so loud she jumped out of her shoes. Is loving to everyone in the house. A cat that just love him. I love the dog but he is a lot of work. Can’t leave canned cat food on the counter cause he will take a can and chew on it. He will take food off of counter. He’s great with all the pets in the house. If you don’t feel like having such a Deva of dogs think twice.
