One time our Great Pyrenees growled at my wife when she was petting him. She instantly knew that was out of character for him and took him to the vet. His guts twisted. He’s doing good now. 8 years old. Sweetest breed ever.

My son begged me for a great pyr but we have always had very small dogs. We held it off until he finally turned 17, went and bought his own and brought her home. We are IN TOTAL LOVE with her. We fought him on such a large breed and now we can't get enough of her! She is 10 weeks old now and such a wonderful puppy!

Some tips and tricks from 20 year GP owner!! I am NOT a vet, and this is free advice, so it’s worth what you’re paying for it. 😅. 1. When they get neutered, the vet can laparoscopically staple stomach to walls of abdomen so bloat is far more difficult. 2. Get them used to you grooming them ASAP; brushing, fussing with their dew claws, etc. Audrey never enjoyed a bath, but she grudgingly let me do it. Trim nails often, and if they do get too long, you can train the quick to shorten by trimming the nails an 1/8 if an inch at a time. That way they won’t bleed. If they do bleed, it’s fine. There’s quik clot you can dip the nail into to stop it. 3. They will get baby delicate skin in some seasons and are prone to hotspots. Medicate the hotspot, Use old, short or long sleeve T-shirts and put that dog in that shirt. Enjoy the hilarity, but also that they will not be able to kick or get at the hotspot. Coconut oil rubbed into their dry skin areas helps as well with any skin problems, but be sure to also cover that spot with shirt. 4. BARKING-we had up to 5 Pyrs at one point, and this trick worked. When they’d all start to get worked up and barking, I’d walk over, pet each one and say “ hey thanks guys, I see it. I see it! I got it! Thank you!” Make eye contact, and watch them get disinterested and move on. I *think* this was because they’re barking to always get the shepherds attention when LSGing? So when they see you the alpha come over, they know their job is done and lose interest. This isn’t a guarantee, but I did experiment and found it worked 73% of the time, and greatly reduced anxious barking. You’ll never fully get a quiet Gp, so that should never be your goal. Work with their breeding, check it out, tell them thank you and you’ll make note of it on their next employee performance review, and they’ll stop.x ( hopefully). 5. We never had to worry about any of our dogs around kids, but that could vary. Ours were always rescues; but even as rescues they recognized that babies of any species should be handled gently. 6. Roombas and constant vacuuming. Brush outside always, and let the fur go to the birds. Honestly, consider a floobie( wasn’t that an attachment to a vacuum to both trim and vacuum hair?) whatever it was, consider it!! 7. Audrey knew I was her alpha; so she would listen to me, most of the time, but these are by nature, dogs used to trusting their own judgment and being left to their own devices. They’re supposed to guard LS, and scare predators. Coming in after peeing is not it. That will take time: but you can find a good obedience balance with them. 8. Your house is safe as in hands of Jesus, as my grandmother would say. Not one person will ever be brave enough to break into a house when they hear that massive, booming bark on the other side of the door. Our pyrs were never aggressive by nature, but some people tried f***ing around and finding out, and pyrs will absolutely take someone down to protect their people, no question. Our big boy Mason pushed a family friend over when he tried coming into the house when my parents weren’t home, and the poor guy pissed himself. No biting happened. But you can imagine 160 pound dog on top of you and seeing death’s face. 8. This is essential-be careful with any excess weigh they may or may not gain. They’re a breed prone to achy joints already, and excess weight will only shorten their lives. Audrey was arthritic when she turned 11, so I was giving her CBD massages, and walks to keep her from getting too stiff. What worked to her advantage was she was never overweight; make sure and check with Vet to see what the right weight is for each dog-Mason was our first Pyr and was breed stand/best in group, and a very comfortable 166 at 3. For our other male Tristan, that would have been way too much. The vet will let you know what’s the best weight for each dog, and take that seriously. That doesn’t mean they can’t get treats, but be careful. 9. You can NEVER start joint supplements or fish oil for them too early; our pyrs have lived between 11-15 years when the breed standard is 9, and I think it’s because of the joint supplements and fish skins. 10. GET PET INSURANCE. They’re big dogs, and as a comment below says; you’ll know when a pyr is sick. I knew it was time for Audrey to cross the rainbow bridge on the first and only day she nipped at me from being in pain. They will not hide how they’re feeling from you, and you don’t want to worry about cost. Having more than 1 pet easily justifies the cost of insurance for them. 11. Don’t ever cut their hair in a puppy cut once they’re over 1; they need that fur to protect their baby skin, even in summer. When you DO bathe them, but an actual shower cap securely over their ears to protect them from water. They’re prone to ear infections, and you’ll know it’s an infection when they shake their heads excessively and smell. Make sure to actually blow dry them as much as possible when you do bathe them at home, and put some leave in conditioner in their fur( dog friendly, obviously) 12. I regret not doing this more-- take videos of their silly faces and acts. I have so many pictures, but my Nstepdad was the only one who took videos of my girl, and he refuses to give them to me. Make sure you have videos of their bark, their pyr paw, and their zoomies. You don’t ever want to forget what their bark sounds like. Audrey was my heart animal, and my soulmate/me in a white coat. I won’t ever run into another dog like her on this planet,and I’m okay with that. I count myself lucky to have met my heart animal at all. Just enjoy every single day you have with that goofy creature. Your life will never ever be boring and always be so much better with them in it. 🥲.

We rescued a Great Pyr/German Shepherd mix about 9 years ago. I'm sorry for the length of my comment, but I want so much to share how COOL this breed is. I admit, ours isnt purebred. We ran a DNA test on him for fun and found he is ½ Great Pyr, ¼ German Shepherd Dog and then a mix of like, 5 other breeds, including a Jack Russell terrier, Kuvaz, Commondor among others. But the experience of having him in our life these last few years has been so much fun. He DEFINATELY shows mostly Great Pyrenees character traits - which is what I'm sharing with you guys. Our Bear weighs in at 80 lbs. (apparently, being that he is a mutt, this is travel-sized for our convenience) but we LOVE LOVE LOVE our sweet boy! He basically has a shape and body type of a Great Pyrenees (head, floppy ears, muzzle profile, big, soft brown eyes, etc.) but simply has German Shepherd coloring. Married for 27 years, my husband and I like having larger dogs as house pets, so we thought we'd try this one. 😉 WHAT an adventure! This is an AMAZINGLY smart breed! Training (of ANY dog really,) is a must. They are bred to be independent thinkers and because of this, often times they are labeled as stubborn. A Husky (we had a purebred and he was sweet) is stubborn. Great Pyreneeses are independent thinkers. There IS a difference. Teaching them the "right way" of things from the start (12 weeks old is usually the optimal time to begin training) will just about MELT away that stubborn label. Bear's independent thinking has been downright HELPFUL! That said, Bear has been SO much fun to watch over the years! One thing we learned since having him is that not all herding breeds are the same. For example, Border Collies herd animals by chasing them, nipping at - but not biting - their ankles. I've had friends say their Borders do this to their kids. But others herders, like the Great Pyrenees, herd by LEADING. The sheep follow them because (I've been told by farmers) they live WITH the sheep, in the barn, since puppyhood. Since Bear has Great Pyrenees blood in him, and has lived with US since puppyhood, he thinks we are his sheep, of course. So what this look like? This means that the dog runs ahead of the target(s), barking loudly, dancing around if needed, to get them to follow him. If they turn back, or go the wrong way, he whine-growls, circles around them (no nipping, but you MAY get an occasional "goosing") and BARKS ...(ugh!)...they have an INCREDIBLY loud bark! This helpful feature of herding means you will NEVER get lost in your house again!😃 We didn't teach Bear to do this, but, sure enough, he would herd our youngest daughter and now he herds our grandson when he comes over! No harm has EVER come to the kids except the occasional 'bowling over' to get ahead of them. (Insert a BIG eye-roll here) By the time we realized what was going on a couple of years in, it was too late to break him of it. So we make the best of it and just say, (and we have taught the kids to say this too) "OK, Bear. Good boy! Show me where the bathroom is!" This at least stops the barking. Then he kindly escorts us safely upstais and intently maintains eye contact until you pick up the tube of toothpaste. He then just meanders away, satisfied with himself, knowing he executed another job well done. (Our dentist is VERY proud of him, anyway.) So be advised: any kind of repetition in your day (in our case bedtime) will make them pick up on trigger words/phrases. In our case, they are: "Time to brush teeth", "Go get your jammies on", "Time for prayers" or "Time to read books" and no matter where he is in the house, the frenzy will begin. There's no stopping it - only preventing it - so we've learned to spell. Now. Many dogs shed. German Shepherds are WAY up there on that list. Since it seems we have the best of both worlds with the top shedders in one animal, we deal with a lot of HAIR!!!! Get out your Ferminator (tm) brush with its vacuum attachment, ladies and gentlemen, because THERE WILL BE HAIR!! And LOTS of it. We recommend the Shark (tm) stick bagless vacuum (30 ft cord comes in handy) and be prepared to vacuum EVERY day. (Do we vacuum everyday? No. ...and regret it when we don't.) One of the downsides is the haircare. We will still have a large dog, mind you, but we'll probably go back to an Airedale Terrier (like we once had) or perhaps something in the 'doodle' category. Bottom line: The Great Pyrenees is a WONDERFUL, beautiful family dog. Just be informed about what you're getting into with the hair. I'd like to have a purebred Pyr one day but I'm not sure I want 🤔 to take on the haircare again. Oh, yes. Aaaaaaand they eat a LOT. Like he said, they DO eat [at least] 6 cups of food a day. What goes in must come out, so there's a fair amount of poop-scooping going on in the yard, too. (P.S. I was not paid to [brand] name drop like I did. Those are simply the brands we use and they work GREAT!)

My dream dog

my great Pyrenees puppy turns six months old today, and so i went on a KZfaq binge of originally just cute videos. we just had her weighed at the vet and i was starting to worry i was over feeding her. instead i found out she's a healthy (if not huge) 64 lbs. she still has a year left o go so i can only imagine how big they will both get.

Love my baby waited a long time to finally get a Great Pyrenees

Such a cute puppy! So funny, I feel like most of the things you said to describe your Great Pyrenees is the flip opposite from our two that we have on our farm. 😅 The things that are similar to ours is that they definitely are gentle and calm dogs, they much prefer to be outdoors (and will ignore your calls for them to come inside 😅), and they love laying up against the wall because it's cooler there. They are incredibly easy to care for because they are so chill and independent; one of their defining traits as a breed. We have never had issues with them chewing random things in our farmhouse (rarely even took interest in dog toys), ours have never been food driven (sometimes I wish they were more so for training purposes), and our almost 3-year olds sleep all day, but play/bark outside all night (as they are considered a nocturnal livestock guardian breed). I will forever be in love with GP's! ❤️ They certainly are a great breed to raise around other small animals and children! I'm sure your pup is loving the new acres!!!

My Great Pyrenees is a little over 10 months old and over 100 pounds now. I loves this video as it reminded me of her when she was young. She is such a great dog! Barks a lot, but great with all people and dogs and my other household animals.

I’ve got a Pyrenees lab mix. She’s a fierce guard dog that will bite if the family is threatened. She also doesn’t do well with kids. I really have to be vigilant that people don’t walk up on her while we’re walking. She also uses the dew claws to climb onto your lap. Her love hurts us.🤣

My Pyrenees / Boxer has been my constant compaion for over 4 years. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. I work online, so we are always together. Her name is Maria and yes she is all that. I have not seen her transform into a werewolf but I have seen her getting close to that. She is a Force of Nature and she is my best friend. We were together in her past life, too. That was when she was Charlie Marie. She was an English Mastiff / Saint bernard. I know that she adores me. When I touch her chest, her heart skips a beat. She gets separation anxiety when she is 10 feet away.

I wake up at 5:30 AM to start work at 6. So my 3 year old is like..."Nah I'm good to sleep". But she will follow me downstairs for her morning treat and to be let out while I make myself some coffee. They truly are gentle giants and they love everyone they meet.

We just got two Great Pyrenees puppies and they are so much fun. We have been so busy since. They are now two and half months old and they eat 4 times a day! they play a lot then poop a lot 😀and then nap afterwards. They are very smart, understand everything but don’t want to listen when they don’t want. They also want a lot of attention and affection. My husband and I both play with them at least three times a day, apart from their play time. Both of them are sweethearts but different personalities. One of them is more obedient and love to bark when he is alarmed. Another one is more relaxed and doesn’t bark and doesn’t follow directions well. They are growing so fast, I love them so much, they are my babies ❤

My Pyrenees growled once over his food at me. Never did it again, cause I trained him to not touch his food until I said so. I loved my buddy so much, but he got bone cancer n had to put him down, best dog I ever had.

Our gp was not limited on feed while growing however we didn't give it back to back. Fed a bit then a bit more later. That really helped.

I have space for mine but make it a point to take him to the dog park to play with other dogs. He gets along but if any challenge him, he will fight. One of his smaller dog friends got attacked by a full grown doberman. He instantly got in there and protected his buddy.

My beautiful boy was a mix: half Pyrenees, quarter white shepherd, quarter wolf. 160 pounds of glory, before he got sick. A sweet and gentle giant of a dog. He put up with ungodly amounts of crap from toddlers and kittens, but he was a terror to coyotes.

Great video and info. I am very well traveled but knew nothing of Great Pyrenees dogs. I probably mistook them as a large Yellow Lab. My black Lab Duke was with me for 12 years. I buried him( he was laid to rest on our farm) 1n 84, and haven't had a dog since. The reason I looked the Pyrenees breed up was because of an incident at Home Depot. I was walking down the main middle and noticed to mu left a huge white dog next to (probably) his keeper who was sitting down with a Home D. guy in the cabinet section. I didn't pay close attention. 15 seconds later, a guy and his Pit (on a leach and harness with a handle) was walking toward me with a shopping cart. The Pitty stopped to smell me for a second and his keeper smiled and said "he likes you. He never stops for anyone" and that wasn't surprising to me. Dogs love me perhaps because they are highly intuitive and sense I miss my Dukey and like being around them. About 5 seconds later (I had my back turned) heard banging and then dogs fighting. It was the Pit and the Great Pyreness. The owner of the Pit was crashing his cart in between them trying to get them separated and couldn't. The Pyrenees keeper was standing back yelling something. Out of no where, this guy who was about 6'3'' 225 pounds grabbed the handle on the Pittys harnes and pulled it away. Pitty wasn't done. He didn't go after the guy who grabbed him and was still trying to get to the G.P. . With the G.P Keeper behind the Pyrenees and between the Pitty, the G.P. was extremely calm. I don't know how it all started because my back was turned, but Home depot management show up told the Pitty's keeper to leave and never bring that dog on Home Depot property....ever. The Great Pyrenees and his Keeper went back to what they doing with the H.D . employee.

Love this video. Our Lolar bear is the best and worst thing ever lol we live in maine so in the winter she absolutely will NOT come inside lol we've had complaints that we leave her outside but if you own this dog it's not true. She does what she wants and she comes in when she wants to. I'm a new pyr owner but she is a year old and she is absolutely amazing. If you understand the breed its easier to train them. They are guardians. She's attached to my 18 month Olds hip. She's amazing. In my opinion they are the best breed of dog.

My great Pyrenees puppy is 3 months old and doesn't like to eat. I'm feeding her solid gold large breed puppy. I haven't been able to find many other large breed puppy food to switch and see if she likes another food better. She also doesn't like to stay outside but maybe she will when she gets older. She has been the easiest puppy to train. So smart.

I have a 12 week old female and he reminds me a lot of except she only wants to be outside long enough to potty then back in the house because we live in Louisiana and the summers are so hot and humid here, her favorite spot in the house is on top of one of the ac vents 😂 she likes to play in water outside but hates a bath?🤦🏻‍♀️ and she does have a little separation anxiety but what I do is pick up as much as possible, close the bedroom and bathroom doors and leave several of her toys and bones for her to play with and chew and she’s been doing really good with that! But 6am is our Zoi alarm lol potty and eat so I feel ya on that 😂 but they are really great dogs! 🥰

We love our G. pyranees, We "HAD" a fox problem killing our hens, now Foxes won't even dare jump our fence. They're so gentle with my 2 year old toddler!

They are great cross with a sarplaninic and it’s what works best for me and my herd of goats plus free range chickens 😊

All of my pyrs were slow intermittent eaters. I qlways just put out the days food and they were eat it over the day.

OMG! How adorable! I had my Jasper, Great Pyrenees for going on 12.5 years and I miss him so much. Your pup is typical as Pyrenees go. Typical thief! My late husb made a roast and when done placed it on the edge of the stove. Turned around not even a second and Jasper had the entire roast in his mouth with a look of, "now it's mine!" Ate the entire roast and never got sick! He guarded me like no other. When he felt or heard a noise he would grab at my arm taking a hold of it; him trying to help me back from answering the front door. Sleep..oh for sure! He loved sitting out in the snow even on very cold days. He had dog toys but he preferred his bones especially his Dingo bones and meat bones. Made him dog ice cream which his just a ripe banana, plain yogurt and peanut butter. The breed is slow on learning tricks but Jasper knew a few. I have a Cal King bed and oh yes, Jasper wanted to sleep with me. He got up all on his own. The only thing is he took up pretty much 3/4 of the bed horizontally. Me being small I still had no room!!! They do tend to have at least one blow out of fur a year but can have 2 a year. So I know... all the fur is everywhere. I wish you all the fun, trials and love with Milo. He is gorgeous! He definitely needs outdoor space to patrol.This breed is not meant for townhouse or Apartment living full time.They instinctually want to protect there owners and or property.We are on are second Great Pyr and made sure with are second one that we had very good genetics.We got our current GP from a breeder in Colorado and what a difference between are 1st and 2nd GP. They love chewing up paper towels.He needs space outside to curb his curiosity and so he feels like he’s doing his job. We’ve got 10 acres and 5 of it is fenced because he will travel for miles if he was allowed and would come back when he’s ready to come back,and forget it if he’s chasing something away from the house and yard. Wait till he’s full grown and his whole head is on the counter.We ended up getting a bar height kitchen table so his snot was no longer on the table are swiping food off of it.

My 8 week pyr/Anatolian shepherd puppy is almost 18 lbs and just getting started lol

Ours is 12 now. She doesn't like getting into a pool water but doesn't care if it is raining or snowing out. Lost many a roll of toilet paper to the chewing. She is finicky on her food. We don't need to worry about how fast or how much she eats. We say she eats like a teenager on how much she eats. She blows her coat twice a year. We found a good groomer in our area. Some groomers do not take large dogs.

We just got one last week. ANY TRAINING TIPS WOULD BE AWESOME! we have a German shepherd and they are not getting along well at all

Thank you, I got a Pyrenees/husky puppy for my birthday. He's been good for my mental health...who needs antidepressants when you wake up to a nose nip with puppy breath and kept up and active? My therapist and I are looking into registered therapy dog training. Using his personality to lift others up as he did for me would be good for both of us, so my therapist says. 😉 Amazing animals!

I have 3 of them a 2 yr female, a 18 mo female and a 1 yr old male. I also have 6 pups. I can tell you that when they are young they are fine. When they hit about a year the resource guarding begins of it hasn't already. They DO get food aggressive. The dew claws are NOT unique to GP. Other breeds have them, and some pure Pyrenees do not have double dew claws. They talk a LOT of smack, argue, debate, protest and grumble. They do NOT require a lot of exercise.

The best dogs ever I've been looking for 1 that I can afford. Any ideas? I live in New Mexico willing to travel to Texas or even Arizona

I came so close to getting one for my husband’s birthday as a surprise but I broke down and told him ahead of time and he made me realize it’s not the right time, they have the exact attitude as our corgi (also food obsessed) but I can’t see her taking on a real threat, we have 20 acres in the woods for the dogs to roam, but we decided it’s best to get our fence in and get our animals first , he’s right next spring would be so much better, I’m still watching all the GP videos and wishing she had come home 😔

Maybe the reason he was throwing up in the morning and always hungry was that you are feeding a pure obligate carnivore cereal grains instead of meat. If you feed him meat he will live a lot longer than he will with the rip-off grain filler cereal kibble.

i have a 7 month old pyrenees and she is such a good puppy but she is not mello at all. She has 10 acres of land to wander around but she will stay inside for hours running laps. She isn’t violent but she is a klutz and will bumble around and has energy 24/7.

My pyrenees was born on a farm so maybe that changes things but we didnt have any of these issues. He sleeps in our bedroom until i wake up (10am) then continues to loaf around until 4pm (nocturnal). Then its up an at em. They need little exercise. Does steal trash off of anything though!

Great Video, mine is 5 years old 130 lbs, I was told for large breeds like this it's best to put their food bowl on a raised platform of some sort, I think it has to do with better digestion?

So adorable. My dog is absolutely the same, that look in the eyes :D The only difference is that she hates water😅. Oh! And she is polish tatra sheepdog, but they are very close relatives with GP

We are able to open feed but I don't think our GP likes the food that much - lol!
