Jason and Karen take advantage of the rainy Summer and the kindness of neighbours to give back to their woodlot.
They are using the Kubota x1100c to visit some spots on the woodlot where they can plant some spruce seedling. On their way, they provide an update on the firewood season, deer farming, an update on a 25 year old black spruce plantation and even share some moose footage with you!

Thanks Bob, much appreciated. We just want to leave something here better than what we found!

Those black spruce have done well, nice. I agree that a thinning would benefit that stand. I caught that last remark on "what a great chance for a mechanical harvester to do a thinning" good luck on that Jason.

Nice. I just watched a show on chestnut... apparently they are quite a tree! I would love to have a few acres of white plan in... never taken the time to do it yet!

I pick small 3 to 6 inches seedlings out on my lot from spots where they have little to no chance of maturing and plant them back where there are some small clearings. Success rate improves substantially when you come back to clear the brush around for the first couple of years. I only replant white pine and northern red oak. On good sites white pine will be 10 feet tall after 5 years, oak is more of a multi-generation wait time.

That is a great strategy. Karen and I did that when we first bought our land. I remember one summer we pulled about 2500 balsam fir and put them in a seed bed. We had a little irrigation system setup and we planted them the next year!

Jason those trees need to be limbed to a certain height to keep the limbs from getting big in the butt log which makes better lumber In B.C. they use a long pole saw to cut the bottom branches as they space out the cut block. You could get information from the forest service on how to space your forest To space you take out the junk and buck into shorter blocks to lay on the forest floor to decay to feed your good trees IT is alot of chainsaw work from John
