Honestly, it would have been interesting to get Regina as a Precure, even after getting Aguri/Cure Ace. Cure Joker, anyone? It would be interesting to see what could be viewed as twins being Precure together. Oh well... (No, not the one from Smile!)

As a person who never thought Mana being a Mary Sue a problem (and embrace her yuri harem), I always joke the final episode as the episode where "Mana is dead, resurrected, and walks on water!" (Bonus point for everyone who know what reference is this), and then she defeat the "original sin" for humanity. I like this series, Mary Sue or not. Though I am sure what I like from this series isn't exactly shared by many people (because well, my favorite is MTP now, and MTP kinda take a very different route in term of how they approach Precure trope), so I won't comment much.

I agree Mokoto's song is one of the best parts of Doki Doki and honestly you hit the nail on the head. As someone who admires the Pretty Cures for their forgiving natures and ability to see the best in people and allow them to live happily fulfilling lives by purifying the evil that taints them both as cures and as people it was great to see such personality from Makoto and such love from her to someone she hated. As for the finale of this season...christ it was so close to perfection. Ironically it has a lot in common with my favorite season of Digimon which Ryota actually was a part of that being Savers. Yes it's my favorite season don't judge it's fun and has some great characters. But like with this season it shit the bed in the last episode. Arguably I think despite being a worse final episode I got more pissed by Savers final especially what it did to Masaru but this one has similar issues. The final fight being lackluster like you mentioned and even the stuff with Mana pushing that Merry Sue aspect of her that others bring up. Do I think it makes her one? Hell no, but it does come close to making it more apparent. Still the fight didn't need to be their and resolution felt hurt because of it which sucks as just like savers the final leading up to then was great. The Kaju fight, the various cure battles, regina and mana's hug and I love you scene, Regina and Ace's scene with their father breaking him out, and especially the selfishness of the secondaries were all great and powerful scenes. Even mana outing herself as a pretty cure is without a doubt the funniest scene in the show and I had to pause the first time just to calm down from laughing. The backstory of the king and Ange was phenomenal to selling the kings choice and making for one of the most sympathetic pretty cure villains ever...before the finally gives us a true big bad so boring he makes the dark king blush especially due to not having his menace and cool design as well as size that's important to. Don't get me wrong it's the worst thing ever but if that final episode never happened this season would have easily my third favorite ending in the show right behind Fresh and Splash Star, my two favorite seasons mind you. As for characters, Mana is enjoyable and adorable but I didn't get as into her as other leads still I will defend her by people who say she's the worst leader. Honestly I still think that's discount Nagi..I mean Hibiki. She did what she had to and her bound with everyone was great especially Regina who I actually think is the best fit for her as a ship no offense Reika. Speaking of her I loved Reika even though she does go through the motions of being a blue. Her bound with Mana is great arguably on pare with Mai, Erika and of course Honoka who she defiantly got some of her ideas from what with her relationship to Ira reminding me of a certain character with Honoka but it wasn't to noticeable. Still wish they did something with that in the ending though. As for Alice I get your complaints but it might be my bias to yellows but I loved her. Granted she isn't my favorite by any means but she was funny, likable and has amazing scene with her butler and being the teams private rich girl was awesome especially all the practical ways they used her. I wish she got more but I still like her. Makoto I agree to should have had something with the revelation that she was raised by Ann but I felt it was just meant to show why she was so dedicated to finding her and the tragedy of it was sad but understandable. As for the rest of her I found watching this review that she was more of a joke character than I remember but I didn't think it distracted from her being really cool and funny to watch. As for Ace she is my least favorite cure period..,but I will say you have made me care for her more. Later Ace is so much better than early Ace much like her spiritual counterpart in Milk who to became better overtime. As for Regina she is one of the best usages of the Pretty Cure Redemptive Villains group and I would say she is one of the most refreshing. Her wild and childish nature was a perfect contrast to those who came before and after especially her princess successor and her dynamic with Mana is one of the best I have scene besides the Kiryuu sisters and team Splash Star and of course Setsuna and Love. As for the villains they are great in my eyes. While last season you stated how the trio of smile is the team rocket I would argue Bell and his allies are more like that for me. Hell they even both start off as powerful and threatening only to devolve into comedic villains with occasionally good plans. I know you wish Bell was better handed but I felt he was a perfect combo of funny and cool and Ira and Momoda are great in their own right. King Selfish while when talking about the king is great as a sympathetic villain who's selfishness caused him to be submerged saved only by his children. As for the real selfish, he was boring as hell. Also those two villains in the middle were just boring and I was so glad Bell killed them. Of course then their is the real hero of the show..Sebastian who is hands down one of the best secondaries in the series and every time he was on screen had me rolling and even crying at some moments. Overall Doki Doki is a good season, with some great and bad moments all throughout but defiantly a good first season in this era.I am looking forward to seeing your review of Happiness Charge which I feel is heavily underrated despite some issues I know you'll address!! Still great review man!!

I’m glad people aren’t shitting on the season as much anymore. I had really enjoyed it a lot back in 2013 and it was one of my more liked seasons.

dokidoki truly one of my favorite precure series and i love the story, motif, character development, and conflict plus the villians it was very entertaining.

makoto clearly had never had a cavity before, it's likely that the things that cause cavities don't exist in the kingdom and maybe the illness was something the doctor's couldn't decepier

Honestly while Smile is defenitely my favorite season DokiDoki was still one that I love immensely. Mana never really bothered me and Aguri and Regina were both fun characters I enjoyed... I still say Regina should have become a cure because she really got shafted by her sister in that regard (oddly like a certain waffle boy who didn't get a cure form like his sister) but as far as twists go it was fun seeing them pull that off. Overall a good series but definitely flawed.

Despite some flaws you mentioned, Doki Doki Precure is really one of my favorites in the franchise. Like you said, little to nothing wasted in this series, though there were some that are, but it is easily filled by more interesting stuff. And that's the thing with this series, I think this series is very interesting and fun at the same time. The themes of selfishness vs selflessness, having a pink lead that is not a complete idiot or klutz, great villains with their own motivation, and some nice action scenes. Some other things I love about the series which you didn't cover, is how the villains were treated in the end. Some of them end got killed off, some of them joined the good side, and some of them didn't join or defeated but just gave up. This is something that we have seen less and less as the franchise moves on, most of the villains HAVE to have some good side and HAVE to either join the good side or gave up because of the heroes usual moral speech and turned good. This made me appreciate this series even more because it has all of that, and it drives home that selfishness is something that goes away, it is still there as it is part of selflessness. So having some of them not completely defeated or join the good side, or turned good is the best possible outcome. Another thing I like about this series is the plot is very consistent throughout, while there are some BS here and there, but I can forgive that as it is explained later, and there were not too much BS coming out later, unlike the story of Hugtto or Kirakira. Everything is understandable, and I can't find many plot holes which made the story more enjoyable. It could've been a lot better if they just use the movies or make some side stories to explain more about the plot holes but overall I think this series didn't need that. Also this is one of the last Precure series using this animation style, which is the more vibrant and poppy colors, instead of the more soft colors that we see a lot today. Thanks for this long review of my most favorite Precure series, and aside from Go Princess, I don't think any future Precure series will be able to beat this one, not now, not ever. Unless Toei manages to get their writers department checked.

That final fight was bogus, the cures plots (other than Mana's) took a back seat and were horribly underdeveloped.

Alright, so I’ll provide my two cents on the cast since they are the main driving force of my personal thoughts on Dokidoki as a whole: I can safely say I don’t hate them or have anything against them. They are different from your usual cast and abit on the overachieving side but.....that’s probably my main gripe with them. They are quite unrelatable and arguably unrealistic even. I’m not saying you have to be in order to be likable but it’s just makes them more difficult to appreciate. Especially compared to the cast of seasons prior such as Smile and Heartcatch or even after such as Go Princess. I still see Aguri as nothing but tool for a plot twist and Makoto is abit of a letdown since she starts off interesting but ends up dropping her arc. Rikka and Alice just appears to be part of the Precure business because Mana is. Speaking of whom, I can safely say I soften up to her and appreciate her more now since she’s not as bad as I once thought and she’s at least abit different. I guess the fact we now had much worse Pink Leads in later installments helps. But I still find her unrelatable with rather unrealistic ideals and somewhat inhuman with her rather absurd resume, along with the constant spotlight on her that pretty much bogs the season down for me. People have argued this happened prior seasons but I don’t see the evidence for this. It’s just simply nowhere near as prominent or frequent where the characters feels shafted for the Pink Cure’s sake. Especially in the case of the final battle, which I still conceive as one of the worse finales in the franchise. Because of this, she’s not one of my favorite Cures, but not one I resent.....well, anymore. Just one I found alright. Again, I, at least, have soften up to her more than I did before. Overall, Dokidoki is admittedly not be as bad as I initially thought it was. I can see why some would like it but it’s still not a must rewatch for me or a must watch either, largely due to it’s cast and story. While the Cures are truly likable heroes, they are also unrelatable due to their overachieving status while lacking a member who is at least in the middle ground, making it abit difficult to associate with. Sorry but I tend to prefer a more balanced group of characters who can get along despite their social economic status. More power to those who appreciate them and I can definitely see these Cures having fans, I’m just not one of them. Nice review, Adam. I look forward to your review of that steaming pile of Heart Seeds know as Happiness Charge Precure.

Man what a wild ride this was. Admittedly there is a lot to like about this season. It's nice change of pace from what we usually get and there are many concepts I like that is explored. The good: If you ask me, Doki Doki has the some of the best theming in modern precure other than princess. While it falters with it characters somewhat trying to protray these themes (specifically with Mana) I do think that when it comes to the overall story and theming it is pretty damn good. What does it really mean to be selfish? It can be anything really, but I'm so glad this season doesn't demonize people for being selfish to begin with. And how everyone and anyone is a bit selfish and that's okay. The pacing of the story is also rather nice moving at a good speed. It never felt like I waited too long to get to a point, which I prefer. That being said it does contribute to some of the precure teams having a bit of development issues, but I digress. The music is also really nice and it's used damn well. Kudos. The characters are the best and worst part of this show. They are so polarizing and I can see why. These aren't your typically leads and I respect them for going through with it...the problem is that they don't really work that well FOR precure. In things like Sailor Moon, it makes a bit more sense that the girls are more "special" as they are reincarnated, but here other than maybe Aguri being the most normal, all of these girls already have something going for them. It doesn't make it impossible to relate to them, but they really should've toned it down I feel in some places. The bad: The main appeal of precure is how ANY girl can become a cure if they have the heart for it, but when you make already ordinary people have an extraordinary amount of power it kind of looses the point. You have to compromise somewhere to keep a balance. Either their home life has some sort of struggle compared to their cure life or their cure life is a struggle compared to their home life. Doki Doki tries to do the latter, but it really doesn't kick in until later on. And by that point, it's hard to say if they're going to really lose or not. The story while a nice pace also is full of contrivances, and some stupid decisions all around. Aguri is fine in their own right, but wasting Regina made no sense with the little build-up she got. It doesn't help she basically gets shafted into low-tier villain until the end. I appreciate the effort they made to show Regina had a heart, but it really sucks we couldn't see more of it. It also doesn't help that while we have a nice pace some of the characters like Rosetta also suffer from this. She got about 4 episodes centered around her. That's it. Come on! The villains are pretty bad. Minus King Selfish who is an AWESOME thematic villain in his own right, his underlings are total trash. I instantly knew who was going to betray who. That and the show WASTES time by giving us two villains who aren't necessary except for a buff really. They honestly could've done more. The meh: Some meh things I found were as stated in previous parts: Having the team faun over Mana from time to time is annoying as hell. Especially in the team episodes. She is a capable leader, but come on, even previous cures could work without one. Aguri takes a while to get used to and the twist is dumb considering the girl's hard efforts on the crystals were used on her AND NO ONE CALLS THIS OUT. That and she's a CHILD The finale is okay. Not the worst one, but Mana getting the finale blow was pretty meh. All the others did have a moment, but I MUCH prefer to have the ALL The characters participate in the final blow. Just my preference. Overall Doki Doki is pretty alright. Not the best pretty cure series by a longshot, but nice enough. It's good when it's good, but it really falters when it falters. Overall. Well done! Please take a nice break AzenZone! Happiness Charge is next...oh god.

As much as I hate the Aguri, Regina, and Queen Ann story (it’s depressing tha Makoto didn’t get a happy ending) Mana/Cure Heart is still one of my favorite leads. She gets eclipsed by Cure Flora and Cure Yell by a long shot, but she’s still a good leader.

Next up the disappointing 10 anniversary season

There are some pretty cure series that suffer the most from not having a direct second season. Like with Kira Kira (in regards to pekorin and chourou's Lack of development and Pikario's being denied his much more deserved Debut as a fulltime Pretty Cure. Side note if they hadnt dropped the ball so bad they could have saved Cure Pekorin until a second season) and Mahou Tsukai (in regards to the second Villain faction and Ha-chan's accelerated aging. Season one could've had Ha-chan as a supporter with all of her Linkle Stone forms, and season 2 could've introduced her as biologically the same age as Mirai and Riko and her debut as Cure Felice as they introduce the second Villain Faction) Some that could have been even more awesome like with Smile (i can't be the only one who feels like we were missing a purple and orange transformation decor cure based on the lights in the Smile Pact. Plus it could've justified the extra fetch quests brought about by saying that new more powerful decors were created to compensate for the sixth and seventh rangers) and some like Doki Doki that while not terrible couldve fixxed a lot of character problems in the show (Alice's Martial arts outbursts having more focus, Mana's mary sue-esque nature being toned down, Makoto as the true sixth ranger of season one, Aguri and Regina being introduced for a season 2, and even the Selfish Agents themselves since the end felt like it was hinting toward a follow up season based on their dialogue. Plus if we had more episodes with Cheryl [i call Sharuru, Cheryl, because it just feels right], Raquel [pronounced Rock-Elle like the rock star from the 70's i think, Raquel Welsch, plus again it just sounds right) and Lance as humans i don't think it'd be unwelcomed) thus it kinda straddles the middle in terms of how necessary a second season would have been

I always thought that Precure were immune to evil juju and that's why they were never brainwashed after becoming Precures.
