In a perfect world Dokken would’ve been bigger than Motley Crue. Yeah I said it. Same goes for Ratt. Dokken and Ratt were amazing.

I couldn't agree more there is fire with DOKKEN, RATT, CINDERELLA, those three bands didn't get what they deserved ironically the bassist of RATT was in DOKKEN, but Jeff Pilson was the better fit over Juan Craucier which was a better fit for RATT. CINDERELLA though more bluesy than the Ratt and Dokken in either sense they didn't get their just due.. All 3 bands have unique vocals and in some tracks unforgettable harmonies. The guitar work is sublime, the bass playing is rich not overly done, the drumming is on point.

I have to disagree. The biggest problem with Dokken is their albums have amazing songs... then too much filler. Say what you will about Motley Crue, but their albums are pretty solid. I know Nikki hates Theatre of Pain, but I enjoy it from start to finish. With that said, I love Ratt, Cinderella, Dokken, Crue and many... many more.

My first concert. They opened for Judas Priest in June of 86. Ended up seeing them three more times. Once with Aerosmith, another time with Loverboy and on the Monsters of Rock with Van Halen, Scorpions, Metallica and Kingdom Come. Great live band.

Man! you forgot to include Up From The Ashes. Even though it was considered a solo album… if Jeff, Mick, and George wouldn’t have sue’d Don for the “Dokken” name… that album would’ve been a Dokken album. Im pretty sure I speak for everyone who has listened to the album that it was a perfect album… NO SKIPS… for me personally… Thats my #1 Dokken album… not to mention the musicians Don had, Mikkey Dee, John Norum, Peter Baltes, Billy White… Holy crap! what a lineup… if only they would’ve made another album together…

Dokken are amazing, they were the band that got me into metal and rock music. Fun bit of trivia Don Dokken’s Up From the Ashes album was originally set to be the 5th classic Dokken album, effectively it was Dokken MKII. However don was forced to change it to a solo album due to the other members threatening to sue him for the use of the Dokken moniker it’s said that they entered a record deal clause that ‘Dokken’ were one unit not a band owned by the lead singer. But eventually don regained the rights to the name. So to me Up from the ashes is the 5th album after back for the attack, and honestly one of the best, it may require 2 listens to really appreciate it though.

The fact that you have all their discography is a feat in itself since some of the latter albums are little known. Great band to be sure, but perhaps the one that suffered most from the "hair metal" label.
@mistymangham4410
@mistymangham4410 4 жыл бұрын
I have to say it DOKKEN being mentioned as "Hair Metal" in itself is just WRONG. They are just a damn good ROCK band that got caught in a trap. To put them in the realm of Poison, Slaughter is just deplorable . I personally think they could've continued doing what DOKKEN does best.... ROKKEN they already had a darker tone in Back For The Attack.... dark tones like Lost Behind the Wall even since of the darker tones and grooves in Mr. Scary keeping the more introspective socially conscious lyricism of Kiss of Death. Even with tracks like When Heaven comes down from Tooth and Nail they had the elements of GRUNGE years before GRUNGE was even a thought. In my honest opinion on a different subject itself Alice In Chains got trapped in the GRUNGE label themselves they could do the solos and they had the killer harmonies crazy thing Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell were in a "Har Metal " band called Sleaze.

Great video. Back in the day, I got to see Dokken touring for Dysfunctional, Don's solo album Up From the Ashes, and Lynch Mob for Wicked Sensation. What great memories. First of all, many thanks for the link to this. I am inherently lazy and you saved me a lot of time. Not too many hard decisions until you hit the top 5. Thought the debut could have sneaked it's way a bit higher. For me, it's impossible to pick the best and you know where I am going. It's Tooth or Lock. I'm looking at them right now and trying to find the determining factor. It's taking a while. A long while. Originally I was gonna go with Tooth because Without Warning is so amazing to open it and never slows down for the most part until you get to maybe the greatest power ballad of all time. But then I looked at Lock and decided you are right. Top to bottom, it's better. And it has my fave Lynchy solo - In My Dreams - which is an amazing song on it's own. Don't forget how great Jaded Heart is, fantastic ballad. No filler on either record, IMO. Oh, just now seeing you cracked 2K subs. 'Grats, hope you add some zero's to that.

Long Way Home 8. Breaking The Chains 9. Hell To Pay 10. Shadowlife 11. Broken Bones And I totally love their "One Night Live" Acoustic Reunion Album plus of course Lynch Mob's "Wicked Sensation" (with George and Mick minimum as much Dokken as their latest release w/ just Don on it!) and The End Machine's new album "Phase 2". Live I only saw Dokken once in germany (with John Norum) and George Lynch at a show in Switzerland.

Dokken definitely in my top 10 bands of all time , Tooth and Nail is on my playlist there’s really no weak tracks , love the hits Into the Fire , Just Got Lucky , Alone Again really good ballad and I agree with you Lynch solo on self titled is probably his best along with Paris is Burning Live , it’s not just the hits from Tooth and Nail I like equally the ones that got barely any radio play When Heaven Comes Down, Don’t Close Your Eyes , and Turn on the Action all kick ass heavy songs . Those first five Dokken albums were all kick ass

When I was a teenager in the great old 80’s I never got into Dokken as I thought they were too soft and posery. Over the intervening 30 odd years, I’ve not only grown to accept Dokken, but they have become one of my favourite bands of all time. I’ve come to the conclusion that 15 year old me might have been a bit of a dick. Here’s my ranking 11 Shadow Life 10 Broken Bones 9 Long Way Home 8 Dysfunctional 7 Hell to Pay 6 Erase the Slate 5 Lighting Strikes Again 4 Breaking the Chains 3 Tooth and Nail 2 Back for the Attack 1 Under Lock and Key However, the best album Don Dokken ever made was his 1990 solo album Up from the Ashes. That is truly TREMENDOUS.

I love Dokken. I think Erase the Slate is better than you have it. Reb sparked the band. Sparked Don's vocals. Hell to Pay and Broken Bones, re-listen to the vocal performance. Don's tired and uninspired. Erase the Slate is an amazing "late Dokken" album. The reason why Tooth and Nail and Under Lock and Key are so great is they cap at ten songs. My rule of thumb for a great album is to NOT go over ten tracks. Back for the Attack is weakened by filler. Look at great albums by; Dio, Ozzy, Priest, Megadeth.... the best albums DON'T go over ten tracks. 1. Under Lock and Key (makes my top ten of ALL time fav albums) 2. Tooth and Nail 3. Back for the Attack 4. Erase the Slate (Note: Reb played George's solos live better than George could play his own solos, Reb is a badass!) 5. Breaking the Chains

¾ of the album covers for sure looked bleh. Under Lock and Key looked sensible though

#1 Tooth #2 Under Lock #Back for Attack #4 Breaking. Tooth was simply raw and edgy and Lock was polished and near perfect, both great in their own rights. Other albums has too many songs that strayed little too far for my taste and sounded too formulaic and lazy...

John Norum is from the band Europe, Jon Levin played with Doro Pesch in the late 80s then joined Dokken in 2003... no problem, thanks for watching!

@@brycetalksmetal Thanks Bryce I was confused with The names 😂😂😂 I was listening Europe before your ranking, and John Leven is The bass player in Europe. 👍

I think the true reason everyone hates Shadowlife is because the opening track sucks, it just kills the rest of the album if you listen to it first. Just listen to the song that was playing for a few seconds right before it switches to puppet on a string, getting ready to headbang and then all the energy just dies. My personal ranking, including Don's 2 solo albums: 1. Dysfunctional 2. Erase the Slate 3. Hell to Pay 4. Up From the Ashes 5. Under Lock and Key 6. Lightning Strikes Again 7. Solitary 8. Broken Bones 9. Shadowlife 10. Long Way Home 11. Back For the Attack 12. Lost Songs~ 13. Breaking the Chains 14. Tooth and Nail (I love all of these albums a lot and there is very little difference between 1 and 13, I just didn't like Tooth and Nail much because it felt like basic, over-commercialized 80's hard rock). For an idea of my musical taste here are my top 5 favorite bands: 1. Dokken (All albums, old and new) 2. Queensryche (old (Warning-HITNF), (mid(Tribe, Q2K, American Soldier, Mindcrime II, Frequency Uknown) and new (self titled-The Verdict+) 3. Dream Theater (I love all of it) 4. Savatage (New and Old) 5. Alice in Chains (Every album is honestly really good, especially the post Staley-albums.)

@David Phillips I do love Back For The Attack a lot, but it felt a little unoriginal, just a heavier T&N with better writing, and the album's pacing felt a little wonky. Night by Night, and Standing in the Shadows are my favorites. Also, Shadowlife doesn't just have some decent stuff, it has mostly great stuff, ballsy bass and amazing blues riffs all around, coupled with slightly primal drums and great songwriting make for some killer material.
