Pure talent. No machines, no synthesizers just talent. You didn’t have it, you didn’t make it. Dolly wrote I Will Always Love You and had a hit with it before Whitney Houston was born.

Neither Dolly nor her mother knew for certain what happened to the original coat. They assumed it was passed down, till it wore out or was taken apart & repurposed. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate", from her memory & the school pic Dolly had taken in it (which only shows the front, upper area of the coat). The replica is on display in the museum at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.

If you ever get a chance you really should visit Dollywood in Sevierville, Tennessee and make sure to go to the museum there to learn all about Dolly. We'd love to have you come visit East TN, one of the friendliest places on Earth. Dolly has given back so much to this state and the museum tells about this as well as showing her history through writings, instruments, costumes, pictures etc.

I remember Dolly telling that story before I heard the song. She was from a big family and she truly didn’t know how poor they were. She has always had a beautiful heart, she only owns Dollywood to supply poor kids with books and things they need. Last year she sent them 3 million books. She has also written award winning songs for other artists. I love her singing Apple Jack because that was a part of her childhood. Thank you.

Tell your little girl not to feel sorry for Dolly because Dolly didn't feel sorry for herself. That was all she knew and actually she was proud as a peacock to wear a coat to school that her mother had made for her because that made it extra special. I was raised very similar to the way Dolly was raised. We were as poor as church mice but what we did not want was for ANYONE to feel sorry for us and I'm pretty sure Dolly and her family would not want anyone to feel sorry for them either. They were "rich as could be" so if anything, people should envy her. Maybe when your child gets older she will understand that there is no reason to feel sorry for the little girl that was Dolly.

My mother used to get really upset when she heard this song. Her mother used to get given coats by relatives, she used to unpick them and cut them down to make coats for the kids. My granny was a lovely lady, my grandad was a drinker and gambler, my tiny granny was a proper lady and far too good for him. Dolly sings this beautifully x

Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "I Will Always Love You", "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "9 To 5", "Here You Come Again" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.

My Momma introduced this song, and Dolly Parton, to me when I was a young girl. The youngest of 6, I had my share of hand me downs. She told me how she had to wear her older brother's coat to school in high school. But her widowed Mother always filled their simple home with love. I brought up our children to not care about the "it" thing. It varies from generation to generation. Your worth comes from within not without. Dolly told a story which stands the test of time. God bless her. Thank you for sharing young man. 😽💋🎶

I've never been a Dolly fan, but it's a true story, her mom made her a coat and she got teased about it. I'm only listening to it because you chose it. Awwww don't feel dumb or stupid, at least you're listening to our music now and you're enjoying it, try to pass it our music to future generations, that would mean the world to us older listeners.

I read underneath another reaction to this song after this song came out where one lady’s mother made her and her sister a coat of many colors out of scraps she had and all the mothers in town called for her to make their daughters one and she politely declined. Saying she specifically made them just for her girls. ❤️ you must watch the movie!

👏LOVED your reaction to one of my fav Dolly songs!👏 She has it all - lyrical genius, gorgeous pure voice, her storytelling, a great sense of humour, beauty and brains, yet despite 50+yrs of fame, she has remained humble and incredibly kind 💖 She stayed true to her roots - grew up dirt poor in a shack in Tennessee. She's an astute businesswoman but has always used her fame to help others - check out her charity 'Imagination Library' - she gives millions of books a year to disadvantaged kids worldwide. *Check out* 'Down From Dover' - she had to fight to get the song on her album because it was deemed too 'controversial' - but she won! Such a relatable song, #LEGEND #GlobalTreasure

Beautiful song with a beautiful message. Note that she had the strength of character to persist in her belief in her mother’s gift of love, even as the other kids laughed. Did I always have that same level of strength and belief when other kids would make fun of me for not having the more expensive brand clothes growing up (I was one of eight, so we often had hand-me-downs, or store brands like Sears)? No, I didn’t (even though I loved my parents and family). Dolly’s message here really is deep, and puts such a wonderful focus on what is truly important. I wonder how many people this song has helped to persist in challenging circumstances, despite such a materialistic world all around us. It’s such a beautiful anthem of love and appreciation for a mother’s love.

Yes, she is beautiful, isn't she? I'm not sure when this concert was given, but _Coat of Many Colors_ was released in 1968, 1 year after her career-altering debut on the highly-successful Porter Wagoner Show (a collaboration that lasted 7 years), and 2 years after she was wed to Carl Dean, to whom she is still married 56 years later! I was in the 3rd grade in a small KY classroom the year this song hit the airwaves, when the primary meaning of the iconic phrase to most people was still the Bible story and not the country song. Dolly was looked at somewhat askance back in those days by many people in the Bible belt, with her glamorous hair, make-up and clothing, but mostly because of her figure. Many folks, who ought to have known better than to engage in idle gossip and speculation, theorized just exactly how someone who looked like her was climbing the country music charts so successfully. Well, all those old naysayers and scolds (any who are left) have been proven wrong. Her sense of style, flair and _panache_ isn't scandalous. Never was (or at least, never should have been). Dolly is the salt of the earth, as her songs such as this one make abundantly clear. The lady is a national treasure, who has given back in abundance.

@@MsAppassionata Or lusting after her, and transferring those sinful thoughts onto her. Remember it was the 60s, and not the hippy dippy 60s in the country genre, but the Mad Men 60s, where everyone in that office 'knew' what kind of woman Joan (Christina Hendricks) was, because of her upper torso. So, the country music business (or any genre) wasn't always the friendliest place for beautiful women. And you know what? All that makes me respect her that much more. The lady paid some dues, and then some, and still came through it all with grace, not to mention being universally regarded and respected. I don't know anyone, in any genre, walk of life, geographic area, whatever, who doesn't love Dolly. She's the best!

I love that Dolly's character in the song doesn't burst into tears at the other kids' teasing, as most little girls would understandably do -- she stands her ground and calmly explains to them why they're COMPLETELY *WRONG.* Also, ironically a handcrafted crazy quilt coat like that would probably be very fashionable today. And lastly, James, here's a link to another ballad sung by Dolly called "Jolene", backed up the acappella group Pentatonix. Together they won a Grammy for this performance, and if you watch it you'll immediately understand why! :D kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pb9zotyG3b-WeI0.html

If you want to react to songs that tell a story, this should keep you busy for a while. Some of what passes for country music now, not so much.
