I only get gifts for my close friends and family. My outer circle will sometimes get a chocolate box or something similar, and my outer most circle won’t really get anything unless they specifically mention something to me.

Pretty accurate way I have for getting gifts for people close (and not close) to me. If you know the person, pay attention to things they talk about. If you're out and about and are in a place you can shop for stuff, nonchalantly ask if they're interested in something in the place you're in. Pay attention to things they've said they needed or wanted. I always plan months ahead of times when I plan on giving them their gift (for the most part). I made a couple bracelets and a necklace for my friend who likes jewelry and accessories. My friend and I really liked this show called The Owl House, and like a month prior to when the series finale happened, I knit her a little graphic of the first glyph the main character in the show made (if you've never seen the show, it won't make sense, but my friend loved it.) Keep notes of things your friends like, things they mention and need. BEFORE you buy them something you heard them mention a while ago, ask them if they still don't have that thing. It can be an out of the blue question, they'll usually forget about it. In the notes about your friends, also keep tab of their favorite colors. Also, there's nothing wrong with just asking what the person wants. I had to do it with my cousin for a gift exchange, we hadn't seen each other in a while, and after we did we decided to do one. There were a couple things I was able to throw in as a surprise but there was a lot of things that I HAD to make sure she wanted. I sent her pictures of clothes when I was going clothes shopping for her, and I also had to ask her sizes. I had to ask what her favorite colors and materials of yarn are to work with (she crochets). For people you don't really know. If you want it to be a surprise, ask people close to them (if you can) what they like and are interested in. Again, you can just outright ask the person what they like/are interested in. Depending on when you do that, it could be a surprise depending on how much time passes between you asking them what they want/inadvertently talking to them about it, and the actual time you give them their gift. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I wrote this when I was quite tired.
