Dominican President Luis Abinader on Thursday announced the closure of the country's border with Haiti, escalating a diplomatic row over access to a shared river. Since the beginning of the month, the Dominican Republic's government has complained about Haitian plans to build a canal on the shared Massacre River, saying it violates several border treaties between the two nations, which share the island of Hispaniola.

@@cristinalafontant9026 i was trying to be pc with it but I’ll be blunt to explain the impact and maybe understand. Haiti’s underground rivers/aquifers are mostly under dry or of low healed. The river starts and ends in the DR changing it’s natural course well affect the wild life farther down stream. All ppl want is Haiti to get its government to do its job. Do a study and show it won’t affect the river like the DR said. But it can’t so that’s what’s leading to the tension. Also the hands in the shadows at play don’t help. Haity has more water intakes from the river but this canal has a 6 cubic meter per second capacity doubling the river capacity which is basically deviating the river. Since haity is not a country but land run by gangs and there is not anyone to talk with the situation has worsen. The river is born in DR. The river is Dominican. There are 48 km of river inside our country that we can use as we want. Only 7 km is shared at the border. The peace treaty of 1929 indicates that the river could not be diverted by a canal of great magnitude. Down the river there are mangroves, wildlife and 3,700 acres of agriculture that would be destroyed by a cavemen construction. We want you to use the water but under sustainable conditions. There is a canal right there built by Japan for a Japanese colony and we did not have any issues.

DR governments have been destabilizing Haiti for decades and overthrowing Haitian nationalist governments. They even poisoned Haitian fruit trees in order to promote their export. Dominicans are very racist towards Haitians and Africans and what's more, the majority of them have black blood. It has its source in the Central Cordillera at Pico de Gallo under the Dominican name of río Dajabón. Further downstream it runs along the Haitian department of Northeast (left bank) and the Dominican provinces of Dajabón and Monte Cristi (right bank), then flows into the Atlantic Ocean west of the Dominican town of Pepillo Salcedo. The Dominican town of Dajabón faces the Haitian town of Ouanaminthe.

@@DynamicUnreal well there is a reason why it has not been done. there is a high rick of flooding in both countries during raining season and there is a peace treaty that sais you cannot divert the river. 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ and if dominican dam the river in the mountains hatians will be left without water and the green protect area in the DR side near the ocean could be destroy. normally we try not to destroy forest becuase no water.... you know!!!

We support Haiti. DR will have to stop destabilizing Haiti. The trees in Haiti have been poisoned by the Dominicans and they refuse to allow the Haitians to build a canal on their own territory. DR must stop their brutal colonialism towards Haiti.

There is a stark difference between the dominican migration to PR and the US and the Haitian migration to DR. The US and PR are both better, economically stable, and relatively safe places compared to DR, even though, to a lesser extent, DR still has a government, an economy, public institutions, etc. Haiti has no government to speak of and doesn't even worry about documenting a lot of its own citizens. The political class constantly and violently knocks each other out of power, and to top this all off, the International Community wants to hand off this problem to another poor country (DR) or, as an extreme solution, merge both countries! No other country in the world helps the Haitian people more than DR, even though the International Community (mainly the US, Canada and France) would lead you to believe otherwise. The problem is not the Haitian people, as they are a very hard working people, but the ruling elite that funnels hundreds of millions of dollars/euros from aid to their own pockets. I hope this sheds some light on the issue and brings forth some insight on why this situation is the way it is.

EXACTLY SELFISH DOMINICANA HAS 11 CHANNELS OFF THE MASSACRE RIVER AND STILL DIVERTING THE CANAL WHILE HAITI HAS NOTHING TO IRRIGATE ITS LAND AND MOUNTAINS. THE DRYNESS IN HAITI IS CALCULATED AMD MAITAINED BY DR. ALL OF THEM CAN HAVE ACCESS TO WATER/ CANAL. HAITI DOES NOT NEED WATER / CANAL FROM THE SHARING RIVER. PLEASE STOP YOUR BS. DOMINICANA NEEDS TO STOP SENDING ILLEGAL GUNS TO HAITI TO DESTABILIZE THE COUNTRY. THEY NEED TO STOP FLYING THEIR HELICOPTERS ON HAITIAN LANDS AND STOP POISOING AND KILLING HAITIAN PLANTS / PLANTATIONS THERE. THEY HAVE INTERNATIONAL LAWS FOR THAT.
