Welcome to the beautiful Kalinago Territory in Dominica. This area along the island’s east coast was established back in the 20th century after European colonization forced the Kalinago people off their ancestral lands. A land of bush doctors, carved totems, and plant medicine, this culture has remained relatively unchanged over the centuries. Join me and let’s explore this vibrant culture on the island of Dominica!
KALINAGO TERRITORY: After briefly checking out some info on the Kalinago at the Visitors Center, we met a local woman who makes crafts. We watched as she showed me how she weaves baskets. I also got a look at the other crafts she makes, including jewelry, carved calabash shells, woven hats, and masks made from ferns! We also visited a group of carved totems and got a nice view of the ocean.
DANIEL CASSAVA: At this roadside shop, I met Daniel, the pioneer of making cassava bread in Dominica. He made some fresh coconut cassava bread for us, which was crispy and sweet, and a little gooey on the inside!
JACKO FALLS: After driving to a gift shop and a small shop, we headed to Jacko Falls, a waterfall down a slippery flight of stone steps in the jungle. It’s beautiful and peaceful, and the perfect place to take your shoes and socks off and go wading! We also saw some crabs, fish, and lizards there!

My dad travelled throughout the Caribbean and he said Dominica is one of the most beautiful because of how natural and unspoiled it is.I hope to visit Dominica one day so different from the other islands and this is come from a Bajan.

The East side of Dominica is the oldest. If you dig up some dirt, you'll definitely find a lot of artefacts! I remember after Hurricane Maria, the wind was so strong, it uncovered a stone axe in my uncle's backyard. It's a prized find to have something so old and with so much history.

I believe that during the renovations and reconstruction of the Cabrits National Park, many artifacts were found and that's north of the island. Artifacts were also found in the area of Marigot during some excavation.

So much here to learn about the Kalinago peoples...their History ..their crafts ....foods the thatched roof houses....and the view to the Atlantic Ocean is just breathtaking....I'm glad that you got the baskets for your kids and their Mom....Another awesome video of Dominica ...the place is just a natural Paradise. Well, well David: You outdid yourself with this one. WOW, very comprehensive and a lot of history about the indigenous people and Kalinago. Beautiful arts and crafts. So glad to see that you supported the lady by buying the items to take back with you. I have to make that cassava pancake - I love the crispy outside and the gooeyness of the inside and yeah you needed some honey or syrup to go with it😋. What a beautiful, scenic and lush greenery driving up to the waterfall. Even when the rain falls anywhere on any of the islands, there is a different smell in the air that's different to any of the bigger countries because of the lush greenery and fresh air. This was so beautiful to watch. How tired was Nathan having to keep up with you!!! I think that this one is the best yet. It was a truly beautiful, and pleasing to the eyes video. Yes I love the preservation of the indigenous culture in Dominica. It's really fascinating. I wish there was more of it. This channel is fantastic, great cuisine, and culture and history lessons and commentary.

Mabrika (the Kalinago word for hello) David, I have been anticipating this episode on Dominica, and finally it's here!! I simply love how you did this thoroughly, with a focus on our Kalinago people. They are the original people of our island, and they deserve to be highlighted. My great-great-grandmother was Kalinago. So happy that you bought some of their crafts to take back with you. The red beads in the necklaces that you bought, are the seeds from the sandalwood trees, some of which could be found on the path above the river. Just last August I was there and bought some crafts from this same lady, but there are usually two of them there selling crafts. Again, a refreshing and awesome video. Thank you, David.

Karen Roache: David really did a great job on this one. That area of Dominica is absolutely beautiful. So green and lush. It looks so untouched. David went to the other craft store but no one was there at the time. So much history and culture there. I had never heard of the indigenous people of Kalinago. Very interesting.🇹🇹🇨🇦

@@JudyT868 Dominica is the only Eastern Caribbean Island with a large population of indigenous people from pre-Columbian era, and with a territory of their own (Kalinago Territory). The other shop that I was referring to is next to the one where he bought the crafts from, not the shop along the road. That structure has two booths.

@@JudyT868 the Kalinago were previously called Caribs. However, the Kalinago chiefs thought that name was derogatory as it referred to them as cannibals. Kalinago is what they call themselves and the name change went into effect in 2015 I think.

I enjoyed having cassava bread and farine made by my great grandmother mother Lydia Dorsett and Aunt Alice Dorsett up at hilltop Marigot. Cassava bread goes well with cocoa tea.

Love seeing the indigenous region. This is true Dominica. love seeing the history. Beautiful area. This was best life where things were hard but everything they did for the community and family was so rewarding. Love the crafts :) Beautiful. Just beautiful island . Those fern artwork statues are so cool. Lovely view of the ocean. Could sit there all day. Would like to try Cassava bread :) especially with coconut!! :) The falls oh yes. Stay all day.. My great grandmother was indigenous and so my grandmother use to make those same basket to sell. She would travel to antigua to sell her baskets.

There's alot of "gems" (great information) in this video. It's like you're giving information to those who don't know Dominica as well as reintroducing Dominica to many, with history and fun facts. I enjoyed the basket weaving tutorial, yes it seemed like a tutorial. Glad you did some shopping and I hope your girls and wife enjoy their gifts. The making of the cassava pancake, nice. Your host seemed abit skeptical at first but quickly warmed up to you guys and I liked that. I also liked how you embraced him in his environment. I wish you were able to meet the current or one of the past Kalinago chiefs. That would have been a blast. God willing next time. Hope you get to go to the snake steps called "lescalier tete chien" in the Kalinago territory next time. Did you get to see the canoes they make? That view to the Atlantic Ocean- wow! The waterfall. Wow! I love it. It's hidden in all that lush greenery, truly epic. I didn't even know of it. Imagine our small island packed with so much goodies. You covered history, culture, food, nature, community life. You engaged our island in a meaningful way. I hope next time you get to visit the sulphur springs in Wotten Waven, next door to Trafalgar falls which you visited. The villages of Scotts Head, the tail end (south) and it's peak point is worth visiting and the east coast too. There is so much to do here and being with our people to learn our way of life takes time. The Dominica series is packed but it feels like the story line is "oh there's so much more ...to be continued upon next visit." Good job Bongo. Thanks again David. Nate seemed to enjoy it too. We love you David, blessings to you and your family and stay safe. And oh yes this one "it's a vibe!"

Great vid...one thing I would point out is Kalinago/Carib/Taino are one in the same. My grandmother was a full blooded Kalinago as is my mother. Literally asked her about this as this wasn't used very often when she was growing up.

The cassava bread is done the same way in Haiti, & next door Dominican Republic! This thick version David is eating, in Haiti, we add grated coconut to it, as well! The flatter, more crispy version, we eat with spicy peanut butter! I believe there were some Dominicans that spoke a French Creole very similar to Haitian Creole, I wonder if they still do? 🤔

I’m assuming you mean Dominica and Dominican Republic? You said it yourself..they are completely different. The food in Dominica is different than that of DR because the influences are different. DR was colonized by the Spanish, while Dominica was colonized by the French and then the British. There’s also a lot of African influence obviously. And then the indigenous Kalinago people have their own practices and traditions.

I don't know where you are from but it's not nice to talk about someone's weight and size. Too much discrimination in this world.
