--------
Dominique Wilkins reacted to comments by Dennis Rodman and JJ Redick concerning basketball legend Larry Bird. Rodman reportedly remarked that if Bird were playing today, he would be in Europe, a suggestion Wilkins classified as “delusional,” adding that he believes Bird could play in any era. Responding to Redick's assertion that Bird lacks the physicality for modern play, Wilkins dubbed it “stupid” and “selfish.” According to Wilkins, Bird thrived in what he thinks was the most physical NBA era, the 80s, and diminishing his skills is ridiculous in his opinion. When asked if these opinions arise from Bird being white, Wilkins said it doesn’t matter, emphasizing that Bird’s game was impressive regardless.

And yet...Bird owned all 3 of them some how. Listen, here's the best way to translate a prime Bird to today...for 4 straight seasons from 84-88 Bird averaged a 50/40/90 (founding member of that club btw) while putting up just over 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game. Basically take Curry, add 8 inches while DOUBLING his rebounds and you can now match Larry Joe Bird in his prime. Youngbloods today don't understand how good he really was. MJ does, to this day he still says Bird is the best small forward that's ever played.

Bird would actually be EVEN BETTER in today’s NBA… and this was a man that already had a top5 peak/prime! From 1983 til 1988 averaged 27/10/7/2/1 on 51.2/40.0/89.9 shooting, won 3 straight MVP’s, led his team to 4 Finals and won 2 of them.. in probably the most competitive era (especially conference) in terms of players/superstars/teams! Larry would be perfect for today’s small ball, 3pt happy league! Imagine him in that type of game, and with less physicality, more star treatment, so on and so forth… Scary! Not to mention, access to modern medicine and whatnot. C’mon now….. Btw, Nique is a class act and one of the most underrated players ever.

When it comes to Bird, I can understand JJ Redick's ignorance. He didn't play against Bird. And if he watched Bird play it was at the tail end of his career and not in his prime. There's no excuse for Rodman's ignorance. He played against Bird and got schooled by Bird early in his career. Players from Bird's era show him respect. Don't let his lack of athleticism or his whiteness fool you. He was a cold-blooded assassin.
@citypopradioFM

Even after Bird was physically debilitated, don't get it twisted, he was still regularly putting up triple-double level stats and 50-40-90. Rodman is still in his feelings about Bird schooling him over and over because he probably still can't fathom how a slow white guy was both talking trash and scoring however he wanted on the court.

Nah.If anything I understand Rodman precisely because he played against Bird and many elite players from that era are notorious for the disdain that they maintain against their rivals even today. It's Reddick (and not Rodman)on the other hand who stands on Bird's shoulders.

@citypopradioFM 10 ай бұрын
@@kevinscott59 Bird hates Laimbeer because Laimbeer was a notorious and unapologetically dirty player and tried to legitimately injure him. That's a valid reason. Plus Laimbeer is a genuine asshole. Rodman should respect Bird's game even if he personally dislikes him for whatever reason and sticking to this "cause he's white" bullshit only illustrates Rodman's childishness. Jordan personally hates Zeke but openly says he respects his game and acknowledges he was a great player. So what's Rodman's problem other than the assumption that he's salty at Bird's trash talking and the fact he couldn't really defend him? That's just hating on someone's game and status as an all-time great and still trying to insult him to this day.

Every once in a while, I rewatch game 5 of the Celtics-Pacers 1991 series (also known as the game where Bird’s face bounces off the floor). Bird was wearing down, but he completely dominates that game mentally, even though Chuck Person is running his mouth and hitting big shots. What strikes me most about Bird in that game is that he seems to see a few seconds into the future on every play and knows what will happen before anyone else on the court. It’s a transcendent performance, and I will submit that game as my sole evidence of Bird’s greatness.

A lot of greats from Bird's era have often said that Bird was two plays ahead no matter what which speaks to his underrated defensive abilities, getting steals, and averaging double-digit rebounds as well as anticipating what the other team was going to do. He was a basketball savant and his IQ on the court was so high that it more than made up for his lack of athleticism, strength, and speed, and he was still lighting up the greatest defenders in the league while snatching rebounds from giants like Moses Malone and Hakeem.

Hmmm, I agree with Mr. Wilkins. I think Larry Bird would be uber competitive in today's NBA, perhaps even more so than he was in his era. He was smart enough that he was half a step ahead of his competition for the entirety of his career, even when people tried to typecast him as being "too slow". He was executing plays even when he was tripped or slammed to the floor. When Bird stepped on the court, he was like an executioner, or a mafia hitman, or a piranha, but with a mind for the game that exceeded that of anyone before or since.

Wilkins is 10000000000000000000000000% correct. Larry got the crap beat out of him nightly and still was one of the greats of all time. To me Larry only had 1 weakness and that was on the ball defense, he made up for that by being very good at anticipating moves and being great off the ball.

He hit the nail on the head: Bird did all that insane shooting in an era where guys were getting MAIMED on the court left and right. Nowadays, most "defenses" are like gentle snowfalls and this is what Bird "can play in?" Sorry, just doesn't make any sense.
@MiskeenPrince
@MiskeenPrince 10 ай бұрын
but that's the thing they actually weren't getting maimed left and right. that's revisionist history certain teams flagrant fouled more than teams these days but there is plenty of footage showing players getting to the rack consistently w/o getting bodied.

@@MiskeenPrince You're entitled to your opinion and I'm not trying to jump all over you or anything. But I have to ask: were you around and watching basketball in say, the late-'80s to early-'90s? Nobody is saying guys got maimed 100 percent of the time back then. But the way the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, etc. played back then overall would NOT happen today. Even the late David Stern (long-time NBA commissioner) admitted that one of his regrets as commissioner was that during that time, play on the court got too violent.

@@AZ-gz8md Nobody is saying that they got hacked "on every possession." But as I mentioned in my response to MiskeenPrince, take a team like the Detroit Pistons or New York Knicks from the late-'80s to early-'90s. I don't know how old you are but I was around back then and will tell you UNEQUIVOCALLY that the level of physicality with which those teams played hasn't been seen in years, maybe even decades. That's my personal opinion, nothing more.
@AZ-gz8md
@AZ-gz8md 10 ай бұрын
@@bz3105Not talking about you specifically but most people over exaggerate how physical the defense was back then. Players like LeBron and Gainnis would be great in the old school era also especially with there being no zone defense and the illegal defense rule. I feel like old school stars would be great in this era due to the advanced training and other ways that they have to take care of their bodies these days.

Count me in with the human highlight film. There's video of the 1988 All-Star weekend, and there is this dude named Michael watching Larry at the 3-point contest. Larry in his warmups: "He didn't take of his top yet. I'd hate to see it when he takes off his top" - Jordan Bird stopped competing in that competition, after three straight and undefeated.

It's not Larry's style to make a big deal about what other people think of him, but I'd like to hear him say something in public about what he thinks of Mr. Wilkins. Perhaps he's already done so in private, IDK, but for the great Dominique Wilkins to go out of his way to defend Larry Bird from these slanders says something about the greatness of BOTH these men. Kudos.

I grew up south of Boston in the late 70s and 80s. I had posters of the big 3, Yaz and Bobby OrrI on my bedroom wall. I lived and breathed Green, Red, Black and Gold. There are few athletes outside Boston that i cared about. Cal Ripken and Niq are the exceptions to the rule. Now look, Larry will always be my favorite professional athlete of all time, hands down, never going to change. But that man in the video was a bad bad dude. He always brought it. One of the biggest travesties was when the league left him off the top 50 list. I was glad that was corrected for 75 but damn. I have to believe if it wasnt for his Achilles injury, he would have gone to Barcelona

Keep in mind that 'Nique works as an analyst and commentator for the Hawks. He spends a lot of time around today's NBA players and respects them greatly. He doesn't throw shade on any era, even if he doesn't always agree with today's players or love everything about today's game. 'Nique knows firsthand just how great Larry Joe Bird was. 'Nique said, now I KNOW Rodman a few screws loose, but JJ...Man these guys crazy LOL.
