@HAXMAN Tou can use old motor oil from your vehicles and tractors to seal your wood to prevent it from rotting in the future. It's "organic" and effective.

I don't want to boast or anything, but I absolutely hate to garden. My sweet Daddy did his best to get me interested, but I hated it. Today, I have a bumper crop of Sand Burrs, Dandelions, some Goat-heads (another sticker for those not of the South), a few Green Briar bushes, and plenty of Johnson Grass, if you are interested I will send you some seeds, Haxman. Love your videos, sense of humor, and your nice family. Hope you get to feeling better soon. The only thing I remember about what Dad told me is "Don't plant onions next to your Irish Potatoes, because they will cry their eyes out", and Don't plant seeds 6 inches deep. They never come up. I tried to raise chickens and they didn't come up either if you plant them too deep. Love ya man!!

I'm planning my backyard for this spring and have watched a lot of your videos, so I appreciate this update. Love the A frame chicken coop, quick, easy, and it works. I like your smokeless firepit too. Probably not going to use the cement board idea since you mentioned freeze cycles, expanding the beds and letting the old wood rot seems like the path of least resistance.

Love the content and now I’m a new subscriber. I just made my first raised garden bed from cedar planks which are joined together by stones with slots in them to hold every thing together. Cost for lumber and the stones was about $140 bucks plus the cost of the 16 bags of dirt needed. It turned out great and I can’t wait to plant as soon as the weather improves.

Thank you for this video. I built the roofing beds after seeing your video building it. Knowing that the last is good to hear. I made 6 4’ x 4’ beds which cost a bit more per sq ft but they are super sturdy. People thought I bought them like that and were impressed that I made them. I did cattle panel arches on either side of them as well. Hope to make more of them this year if inflation isn’t out of control. Stay healthy!

I built the cement backer beds this last month, cost wise it cost me about what it would for a standing raised cedar bed for two of them, I worried about the bulge too, but I drove 36" stakes around the sides before filling and now I have 1' 6" high beds that are 7x3 and 5x3 that haven't shown any issues. Cannot wait to plant. I'll try to remember to update if anything changes, but so far I am quite confident in the build.

BTW, as I understand it, one trick with chickenfeed is to put hot pepper into it -- birds don't have a receptor for capsaicin, so they don't care. Rodents, though, do, so they are much less likely to eat the chicken feed. A friend said he was losing as much as a third of his feed and he didn't even realize it.

You mentioned adding another 2x12 on top of the existing sides, beware that water will escape out between the boards. I did that as well. Maybe place some plastic on the inside. Thanks for all your info. Nice job.

@Haxman, Love your videos and humor. Tips from a long-time urban chicken owner, they will be much happier and healthier if they have as much room as possible to roam. We gave up on them free- ranging. They destroy everything. We finally settled on fencing off part of the yard that is just for the chickens. We created a small " backdoor" in the run for the chickens to access their yard. We covered the yard area aka run, with black pheasant netting found online. It protects them from hawks. We lock up the chickens every night after they go in the coop to sleep.

20:30 that's a great idea.I have regular spruce raised beds that I know will be rotting away. You only need to build one side of the form if you do them in time.

Glad you're feeling better! I had them as a child and then again as an adult. Part of the lucky 7% that can get them twice. Beware the shingles! I would say it was more annoying as an adult, only because of the responsibilities we have. Pain wise about the same. Love your content! Thanks for creating!

I was thinking the same thing you said at the end, use them as forms and make them concrete. They’ve got some thin rebar out now, 2-3.5” thick would be fine.

In the Back to Eden method, you layer, don't mix - if layered, it does not rob the nitrogen out of the soil. Hope that helps :o)

Thanks. Here's a quick tip from a boatbuilder (me) about untreated lumber. Paint the ends before you assemble. 75% of the moisture in a board gets in through the endgrain... so paint or seal just the endgrain. It'll add an extra year or two to the lumber's life. If you are really worried about that little bit of paint leaching into the soil, then use a food grade clear coat, like they use on cutting boards. Personally, I would just use latex house paint and not worry about that tiny amount of paint on the ends.

I use the Back to Eden method in my raised beds. I just got 15 yards of wood chips to top the beds off and am topping that with compost. I do it in the fall so everything works down by spring. It usually takes a year or two for it to really start working well, the first planting year my wife was ready to kill me! (Her name is also Kim) The pumpkins took over the backyard, the tomatoes took over the side garden, and we just had so much growth! I would pick Cherokee Purple tomatoes and eat them as I mowed the lawn...where I could mow anyway. good things come to those who wait.

Hey, I just realized I gave you just a half of the advice. In addition to painting the fence near herbs white, you should also add Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to the paint so that it absorbs the UV radiation from the sun. Otherwise there is a high possibility that your plants will get hit with more reflected UV radiation in addition to one coming directly from the sun, which would be harmful to them. As a bonus you will get more heat and light radiated from the fence to the plants which could help in springs and autumns.

To help stop the bowing out of the backer board containers you could use some heavy wire across the middle like you would in a Gabion basket connecting the sides together.

Lovely Bald eagle :) A friend of mine was a falconer, and used to train his Falcons to hunt crows. He's over the fields one day and lets his bird go at a crow, the crow took off and he watched as his falcon peeled away and then dove to the ground. He ran over only to find it had taken out a guys prized chicken, and the guy was not happy....so yeah, chickens might not be the food of choice, but when opportunity presents itself nature says thanks very much...lol

Not sure if you remember but I was using Hardie backer board at the same time you made yours. I now have 20 gardens and they are incredible. I was planning on doing a video highlighting them in the next week or so. I used Hardiebacker board, not durock like you, and I painted mine, so not exactly apples to apples. I don't get many comments so I came to your site to see what people would say. I'm glad you did this because I can't find anyone else who has tried. So far, it's a win.

@@jahzlovesouljah I believe the majority of channels on KZfaq that promote homesteading are people who are figuring it out as they go. Even some of the biggest homesteading channels are figuring it out. I have a lot of background but I learn something new everyday. KZfaq has so much to offer, just be careful because not all of the info out there is right. I'm a big proponent or getting all the knowledge that you can and apply what works for you. A lot of times , just having the basic fundamentals is all you need. It's definitely not a one size fits all thing. Take care and see you around.

I'd love more videos. I like your raised beds. I grew up with raised beds of treated landscape timbers. I figured once they dried out it was no longer an issue. I don't know tho. Now all my raised beds are flower beds made of rocks.

If you put some foundation drainage mat between the soil and the wood planter walls, you may be able to reduce the rot by allowing water a drainage space to move away.

Heugal method is good as long as the wood you use is basically insect or bad insect free. We tried it in a small section grew radish and everyone of them were spoiled. The 3’ high raised gardens are perfect if you have a bad back and luv to garden.

I am curious about your thinking on how wood logs would break down and not be a problem since the wood chips were and stunted plant growth? Plant growth is often related to nitrogen available in the soil from decayed organic matter, where as fruit production if often related to the potassium available in the soil. You can tell a bit about these relationships from most fertilizer bags with the numbers showing to indicate what will be provided by 3 fertilizer components.

i built mine with concrete cinder blocks, 14 of them, 3 width 4 of them length wise, very inexpensive and easy to get into for beginners, takes 10 1 sq ft bags of top soil.

One additional thing I do to my raised garden beds is add a layer or ribbed underlayment (made to go beneath vinyl plank floors) to the inside walls of the beds. They are non-toxic, non-leaching and they prevent soil and water from resting up against the wood. Because it’s ribbed, it also allows air to travel between the plastic and the wood ensuring the wood never stays soaked. I’ve only had them for roughly 3 years but my untreated pine is showing no signs of rotting. Here is the product from Home Depot: DMX 1-STEP 100 sq. ft. 3.6 ft. x 29 ft. x 5/.32 in. Underlayment for Vinyl Planks, Laminate and Engineered Hardwood Floors

That's the same thing we do with our chickens. I was kinda "meh" on the whole chicken keeping thing, but my wife who grew up in Eastern Europe was all for it. I was not big on the idea of having to clean out chicken shit every other day or something, as with two children and a cat I have enough dependent animals to deal with. She looked up that same method of putting the wood chips down though, and we had the same result. No smell at all. And twice a year we scoop the entire mixture out and let it compost before adding it to our garden! Also, it IS really nice to get those eggs...

hey Haxman tx for the video, for any issues with your skin from the chicken pox you can put pure high quality vitamin e oil on any areas that may have had scarring. vitamin e oil from natural food store that is high quality, it will be thick, and a little sticky, so maybe apply at night. rub it in small dab gently in circular motion; and definitely increase your vitamin C intake, as vitamin C assists in the production of collagen and helps to prevent inflammation, in skin and throughout your body. an intake of fresh fruits and vegetables will help skin to heal faster along with plenty of drinking water. oh yeah, thanks for your videos, watched a bunch today and now have to get cracking on these raised beds for my spouse, she's been asking for a while. be well!

That's right- chips leach nitrogen. If they are not already composted they also get hot and can cook the seedlings. You can add Nitrogen by mixing in grass clippings. They have a lot of N2 in them.
