For people in the home studio, starting with the master bus chain is very good advice. I've collected a whole heap of outboard gear now, and still don't have anything I'd want to put on my master bus. It's great for mixing hybrid, but mixing hybrid makes switching projects and recalling a nightmare so the end result is that it all only gets used sometimes for tracking and then only on the one serious project I know I'm going to finish - and the rest of the time it just sits there. If I could do it all again I would key maybe just one of the units I have and the rest of that money I would've invested in a good bus compressor and EQ for my master bus. That's something that would be far simpler to recall and use in every project and get my money's worth out of it.

This is a stupid question, but could you please explain that a bit more? I built a 500 series lunchbox with a good eq, compressor, neve tape saturator, and a mike pre... I plan on just putting it end of chain for my live synth tracking before capturing it with a 1010 bluebox digital recorder... Is that a "master bus chain"?
@exhumus
@exhumus Жыл бұрын
@@BobbyGeneric145 I would consider that a recording chain, you've basically built yourself a channel strip with added tape saturation. A master bus chain is the processing you add to all of your tracks collectively after they're summed and before they hit the mix output.

Great advice, thanks. I’m in the process of having my studio built. I am primarily a session guitarist and in the box but with a Manley Core to get some tube tones on mic for acoustic and mandolin. Trying to get some higher quality tones as the remote sessions keep coming in. Contemplating making another step with an SSL Big 6 but not sure if that’s a good way to go. Any advice on that?

Always such great & interesting topics =) For me, its clearly passion. I began to put a modest little room together 3 years ago. It' s challenging on a dishwashers budget! Right now for example, I've finally managed to collect the DB25 Jumperz for an interface I purchased FOUR months ago. 48 balanced I/O's. My point is only that the cost of hooking everything up should be considered in advance as well. Plan for it! Its a nice problem to have, but I knew well before hand what I was getting into cost-wise. I just love the process all by itself though, so I'm not very concerned with how long it takes. The journey should be at least as fun as the destination is, wherever that may be.

When I was working in a small 8 track studio during the 80th I had to learn how to use the equipment to its maximum because I needed to maximize its potential due to the low budget the studio had. That was the best lesson ever, so start small and learn the equipment's potential, plugins and hardware, until you feel a limitation and a desire like, "if I just could do...", then it's time to find this thing that can do that. By that time I had one benefit that I'm educated in electronics, so I didn't read manuals, instead I was looking at the electric schematics which was more informative. Anyway, don't buy tones of whatever before deeply exploring what you have and how you can use and abuse it.

Such a big topic here. Regarding the Fusion, this is a unit I own and I really love. I do not use it on every projects, on certains it works like a charm while on some it just does nothing big. As you said David, this is regarding every project we work on. Not a lot of people seems to understand this, even some "professionals" I faced few times that tried to convinced me this unit is trash. Their argues : "it's not mastering grade", "I can do better with plugins", "that's a waste of money" blablabla. I felt like just because they do not like it, they have to say it out loud everywhere and try to convinced everyone not to buy one. For what reason ? I guess because they think they have the truth. I've read several times the Fusion is a very controversial tools from SSL, like it's "cheap" compares to what they usually do, the quality is average, and so… that's what some people try to say, comparing the fusion with some Neve or Tegeler, and more.I still do not understand why some people do not get the point that tastes are important in the gear we chose and that if we chose it, it's because we want/need it, that's our business, we do what we want. Thanks David for such a video, some talks like this one is refreshing some minds I hope. Greetings.

Good video on a very interesting topic. In mid-2020 I decided to go back a little. Going back to analog and using fewer plug-ins. From 2007 to 2020 I had become a pure plug-in "Preset Bitch". More and more plug-ins, dazzled by the ever-improving graphical representation of the plug-ins. I stopped listening and only trusted the presets and found it really great. Up until 2007 I was still working with "old technology", an Atari Falcon 030 and Cubase Audio for the Falcon. Plus hardware EQ, compressor and reverb. That's it. Then in 2007, as mentioned, came the switch to PC and plug-ins. I wasn't really happy with that. So 2020 is a small step backwards, with a lot more hardware. I shot most of my plug-ins into digital nirvana. Hardware from GA Project, Warm Audio, Looptrotter, Klark Teknik in the form of compressors, EQ, saturation, mic preamp and so on as well as an old little Akai tape machine let me focus on the essentials again, namely listening. And now I'm having fun again. I'm also just a small hobby producer, not a professional, but it was still important and necessary for me.

You always provide the hard facts and that is what I really enjoy about your channel. I am a musician and hobby recording enthusiast and recently came to the conclusion that I want to add analogue warmth to my mixes by adding a piece of hardware. Because I want to experiment and not break the bank, I bought a $125 Behringer stereo tube preamp. Its been discontinued, but its where I will start and I plan to let my ears decide if I made a mistake or not. If I hear more transient warmth on the highs and lows as I hope to hear, I will then decide if my cheap purchase was worth it. Also upgraded to a Tascam series 208I along with the 8 channel tascam that brings me up to 12 total pres for recording drums. After a ton of research, I determined that the advice of getting RME would leave me with alot less flexibility, less Channels and cost twice as much. Slightly better converters and pres, but much better? Not a chance at this price point. Preamps and converters have come a LONG way in 15 years since I had my focusrite Saffire pro 40. Instead, with the extra money, I upgraded my Microphones on the drums to Lewit DTP340TT toms mics.

Totally agree. A piece of hardware (as a plugin) doesn't work for everything neither for every mix/master. There's no magical "something" that works every single time. And of course, it is important to respect the learning curve (don't forget about read the manuals of the hardware/vst's) to get the most of your tools

Great video David. I like many, have been lusting over analog gear. And the high end gear is extremely expensive to me. I've considered finding a sugar momma to buy me gear in exchange, becoming a contract killer, pimp and drug dealer, but decided to just keep doing what I'm doing. I am an artist basically trying to build my studio and skills for me in recording my own songs to release. The very first piece of analog gear I bought is a BAE 1073DMP. And I researched and studied pre's and channel strips over and over listening to what sound cuts I could find to settle on the BAE and not go with the all in one style channel strip. All the rest of my processing will have to stay in the box for now.

Very helpful video, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. I would love to see a video or a serie on the "2bus chain" for home studios in which you could maybe give good advices how to jump in the analogue word in a smart/budget friendly way. I'm myself very attracted by the "analogue vibe", not only for sound but for the feeling I think it could give while using it. I never started in that game because I'm fearing it's an endless quest. That was my comment, and I appreciate you opening up some different perspectives and with the past Fusion Hardware vs Plugin video as well. I guess because I own things like the Maselec MLA-4, Kush Audio Clariphonic M/S and Elysia Nvelope, in hardware the HF Compressor just didn't make a lot of sense to me. With Suites like Ozone and FabFilter, I think those and some of the great plugins you've reviewed on here are definitely great starters before buying a piece of Analog. The Stereo Imager from Ozone is really good, and Saturn from FabFilter is really good also, so it covers I think a lot of bases and with the Multiband also. I think those plugins just do a better job, and are essentials for any engineer in this business ( both suites). I also think that some pieces of analog gear can be a bit hit or miss, especially for mastering and mastering engineers are very very particular and there is a higher standard when it comes to analog hardware for mastering. I think it's mostly about spending your money wisely and when it comes to your first pieces of analog gear, you're going to want high end converters first and monitors before anything else. If you're looking to build out an analog mastering chain, it definitely takes time and it's an extremely expensive investment. I have at least 100k into my analog mastering gear built over the past 3 years, which is significant for me and probably for most, and buying into analog can be a bit of a rabbit hole, so you want to be choosey. I love gear. I think when I buy a new piece, I definitely try to do my homework, look at reviews, talk to other engineers and by knowing my current gear, really know what piece is going to fit, and when we have such a robust toolbox of plugins playing the analog game gets real difficult. This is mostly where my comment came from,. Great video David.

For those just getting into the analog game, did you suggest that analog gear focused on mastering gives more bang for buck during the early efforts? I recently upgraded to an AES system and the AD and DA convertors...holy cow.. you know. It was a hard pill to swallow just getting the Avocet. Im tempted to get some gear for my mic pres, standard shit..., 2As, 1176s, pultecs, but your comment gave me pause. I have all the compressors and such from waves and UAD. Ur def saying some things I’ve been suspecting. I’ve just heard so many AB comparisons and analog wins for me every time. And especially after a comparison u recently did between a widener plugin and it’s hardware version (the difference was clear). I’ve been really thinking about what I could get to take my purely cold, flat, digital sounding mixes and breath the analog life into them that I personally prefer. I thought maybe it would be cheaper to buy a unit I could send everything out to and print back into my daw. Currently the music I make has guitars, vocals recorded by me through a Neuman TLM103 and everything else is digital samples. Any advice on what pieces of gear I could get to accomplish this or is it just not a good idea?

Hi David. I've been mixing my own electronic music for over 10 years at least. I always spend A LOT of time with various plugin EQs reducing harshness and mid range build up. It's the usual curse when using all analog synths to make music. I currently don't own any analog outboard gear but I've been looking into something to either speed up my workflow and or add that final punch and polish to take my mixes to the next level. I am really interested in the Drawmer 1973 multiband compressor. I thought it could maybe tame the harshness easier while controlling the low end and add that analog depth to my mixes. Do you think this unit would help me in those areas? Again, I've been home mixing for a looong time and while I've gotten considerably better, I'd like a unit that could help bring things together faster and add that extra "depth" pro mixes have. Thank you David!!!

@@slavesforging5361 Did he speak highly of it because he bought it and likes it, or because Cranbourne gave him some stuff in a product placement agreement? I'm always a bit cautious with youtube marketing of the latest and greates gadgets that come out... Their pres are very competitively priced however and the rack looks good. Conversion quality has jumped up in quality a lot, even affordable interfaces are not all that bad anymore, so the rack is definitely something I'd consider if I had some unused ADAT connectors. For driver stability and interface longevity I've moved to RME, so I'd look at ADAT rack before I'd take the R8. However, for the difference in cost ($300), you do get an interface, so that's also worth something, especially if you're looking to buy a bunch of stuff.

HI, I just get a Cranborne Audio 500R8, for 500. series modules and have an audio interface. Because I am going to locate to my left, the unit is a 3 feet Cable to my left Monitor and 10 feet cable to my right monitor. So I wonder if is necessary to use 2 xls cables the same length ( 10 feet ) or I can use a 3 feet and a 10 feet cable , same brand , ? ......... About your question , I been 5 years in love with ITB, because of the easy it is. I have Gear ( RS7000, Emu XL-7, corgi, etc.. etc.. ) all in boxes without use. Now I just starting to go hybrid, probably send midi to my gear and record back from the synths quantized, or record lots of kicks, snare from this machine. They sound better than VST plug ins , no doubt about it, ( and in live act is totally different the sound ) but I was in love of the easy of ITB. Going Hybrid on Mixing and Mastering, I expect to treat my stems and part of the. mastering Chain. Waiting to arrived 2 Stam Clones of 1176 rev a , stam clone SSLg , 2 Lindell type Pultec eq, want to get the new SPL BIG , want to get a couple of colors from DYERE / Louder than Lift ... , and continue use fusion plug ins and ssl plug ins, and anything in plug ins I will need. I am been using Analog Access, ( Portico ii, Manley VU, 33609, Black Box ) is great but the latency make the work flow a guess. Thank for your Videos. ( I Produce Electronic Music )

I think a lot of the audience on this channel are people who are just musicians/aspiring mix engineers and love music and are perfectionists in terms of audio. Monitors in your room are by far the most important thing and an average engineer who has $10,000 speakers and an amazing room is going to do a better job with only plugins then someone with all the analog gear in the world and cheap speakers or bad room. David is right when he says don’t buy the popular devices and go through a journey buying one piece at a time. I found this to be true. I have bought and sold many pieces of gear through the years in a quest to find what I like. It’s like buying a guitar amp and pedals to find that perfect sound. If you get too caught up into this too much you’ll stop making music and get frustrated. I do all of my music as a hobby unlike David so the gear I buy is specific to what I want in terms of workflow and sound. When I was in my 20s I had no money but now I’m in my mid-30s with a good job and can afford a nice studio. Currently I am very happy with my SSL Bus + and HDE-250 EQ as main bus/mastering chain. I also have a well treated room, high end genelec speakers, great mics and great tube guitars amps, yamaha c7 piano etc. All of these things are more important than the analog hardware, but all of it together is amazing to me

The truth is complicated. Some topics are complex and take years of experience to begin to have an understanding of them. There are no shortcuts to this kind of sophisticated, subtle understanding. Expertise is real. For some areas of human understanding, there is no substitute for taking the time to dive deeply into them in order to slowly form a conceptual foundation. All of these assertions are true whether you're talking about understanding human systems neuroscience or understanding audio engineering and mixing and mastering. Thank goodness we all have David, who treats us like adults, reads his audience's needs and (lack of) understanding very adeptly, and delivers the cold, complicated truth. 🌊

There are so many things that are different in each studio - Starting with the building itself where the Speakers are housed - and the speakers themselves - then assuming acoustically they have been EQ's perfectly for that room - Then is it only a mixing studio - only a mastering studio... Then what type of music is being mixed - a four piece acoustic jazz quartet will have different demands to an EDM, Metal, Rock, Pop and R&B mix.... the list is huge - It's almost like you can never have too much because you'll never5 know which or when you will need any given piece of gear. Plugins help in some cases but not in all.

I have a creative homestudio with lots of synths with no plans of becoming a mix or master engineer. So I'm used to spending ridiculous amounts of money. I do weekly livejams and I would love to take the end result just a bit higher with a basic mastering chain. I do mostly the same genre (melodic techno) so the chain wouldn't have to change that much. This was good advice. Just a unit like the Fusion, an EQ (I like how the Maag sounds) and a workhorse compressor like Distressor or Bus+ and I think I'm set.

Hi Davy. I'm was looking at two warm audio products with the hope of putting a mic through them to record vocals / acoustic guitar with a touch of eq and compression to slightly colour the sound before going into my cubase steinberg UR44C interface. These are the warm audio wa76 discrete fet compressor = £566 and the warm Audio wa73-eq = £799. I have the Rode n2 mic the lewitt Air mic and and a akg c1000s mic.. any thoughts or should I look at a better vocal/ acoustic mic. By the way I'm also using the Marshall jmp1 pre amp through the digitech quadreverb fx rack for the electric guitars and sans amp rb1 rack for the bass.. this is why I'm now looking at the mic, eq, compressor side of things that don't break the budget. plus I'm kinda old school Davy where the sound you get from your amp and pedals is what you record straight to tape now pc, hopefully in one take.. i don't mind mixing in the box but I like to get things right going in... thanks. don't hold back

I don't have much experience with warm mics but what I know is that they're not bad, I'm not sure they would be the best choice tho' for that price for your genre I'd look at Roswell, those I KNOW they are great. On the other hand, I don't like their outboard gear. My general advice when you buy gear is, don't buy stuff you're gonna sell shortly after (because not that great) save, wait and buy solid. Stam make world class stuff at prices that should be considered stealing.
