While I agree that people, especially tourists, should stay away from drug purchases, drugs are ubiquitous in Thailand. All of the guards where I lived did drugs, had (probably illegal) guns, and drank. Students I know from Nepal, attending a Thai university, did drugs incessantly. I think it's almost inevitable that you find them in some way, whether your friend does them or your neighbor, etc. My two best Thai friends have tried or still do them.

Just fly to Costa Rica. You find it on the street. Actually, they approach you day and night. And Nobody goes to jail for possession. The cops just take your shit, try to bribe you, take you to an atm outside of town and $40 your on your way. They won't even give you a ride back. A friend told me.

Hey, I don’t want to put down your wonderful speech but you are clearly young.... I’m 50 and what you describe is the same in all poor countries, the police tend to use the crazy jail sentences to blackmail you into paying small to medium amounts of money. They almost never ask you “thousands of dollars” because most tourists won’t be able to pay that and so they would have to proceed with the papers and shit and loose the money. Actually from direct and indirect experience (friends) you’ll go free with a couple of hundreds IF you are so unlucky to get caught in such a scam. Nonetheless I have bought (decades ago) weed and coke in many different countries both in South America and Southeast Asia. The only scam I fell into in those years was once or twice being sold fake shit. Get some informations...there are dozens of people arrested in Pattaya each month for trafficking in mid to large quantities of drugs....that’s because there is an active and working underground market and “cop setups” are very sporadic.
