In which I explain digital EQ cramping briefly and succinctly, without making you watch a long tedious EQ comparison video just to get that info; and I speculate as to possible ways to decramp an EQ without resorting to oversampling.
And while I'm at it, let's clear up this confusion about Natural Phase mode in Pro-Q3.

Melda's MEqualizer plugin is a six-band EQ which, by default, has four "Peak" bands which cramp. You can change them to "Peak analog", which don't cramp. You can change the default so it starts with "Peak analog" bands instead, so that's what I did.

Matching the shape of an analog second-order filter with a digital one is a quite interesting topic. I think it likely that fabfilter's EQ uses a biquad digital filter (and not the combination of a peak and a shelf), but designed with another technique than bilinear transform. The Wikipedia page of "Digital biquad filters" links to a very interesting document called "Matched Second Order Digital Filters" discussing several of those techniques.

I'm not qualified to explain the mathematical differences. But practical tips are probably more useful... I have some useful FM synthesis tips (PM I mean) to share, but I haven't so far been able to decide on a synth to use. I looked at Dexed hoping to be able to use a freebie, but the interface is a bit daunting. I mostly use Falcon for those types of presets these days, but that might exclude too many users. I also considered patching stuff in Reaktor or similar to show signal flow between operators. But I haven't really decided on an approach yet...

Hey Dan, I'm binging on your videos right now after discovering you through the Fabfilter ones. :) In the bx console video you mention the belief some people have that analog EQ emulations are just like digital EQs with an analog interface slapped on top and with different EQ shapes. I am still on the fence about this. I only ever use Q3 as my EQ but am wondering whether I am missing out on some "flavor" by not trying analog emulations more extensively. What I am really curious about is, are there any differences if the EQs null as you show them to? Thanks! :)
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 жыл бұрын
If two EQs null perfectly, then they sound the same. No room for argument, I don't believe in magic: if the numbers are the same, its the same. However, none of my null tests quite nulled perfectly. So that means we need to make a judgement call. If the null is better than 100dB at all frequencies, safe to say noone will be able to hear the difference. But as the differences become greater, the certainty that they won't matter diminishes. When there are differences, but they're quite small, the only way to judge if the difference is truly audible is via blind testing.

Hi Dan, I love your videos. I have a question, if you could answer I'll be really happy. Lets say we master a stereo track and not using any parallel processing. Assuming (and believing) we can't understand phase shifts over a stereo file and also we know linear phase can cause audible pre-ringing at lower frequencies with high q and gain values, is there any point of using a linear phase eq? Also I'm curious about the same thing between minimum phase and natural phase eqs. Why should I prefer one over another if we can't perceive phase shifts in a single stereo file? Additionaly I think phase shifts shouldn't be so noticable at high frequencies near the nyquist and also I realized a little pre-ring in natural phase eq's at high frequencies in plugin doctor's IR analyzer. I think it shouldn't be noticable too but I still wonder is it worth it to choose it over a standard minimum phase eq?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 жыл бұрын
It's dangerous to say we can't perceive phase shifts. Usually we can't, but sometimes we can. And we're super sensitive to tiny phase differences between L&R... That said, often I can't hear a difference between ZL and NP, and when I can I'm often not confident I could pick them apart in a blind test. But when I have heard a difference I've so far always preferred NP.
@ertugrullgul
@ertugrullgul 3 жыл бұрын
@@DanWorrall Thanks for your answer. You're right, theoretically there should be a difference between channels when processing L&R or M/S channels seperately but in my scenario I'm talking about only stereo processing and I know modern digital eq plugins can process L&R channels exactly the same, so there shouldn't be any difference in phase coherence. I can say that because I tried an all pass filter (as we know it only affects the phase response) with a stereo file and couldn't hear any difference.

Hi Dan! I have a video request. You know there are a lot of topics like best sounding DAW, Eq. We all proved that the PRINTED results nulls each other. But a lot of people including myself hear the difference between: a) PLAYBACK of the same file in a different DAWs; b) switching different Eqs with the same parameters (that nulls each other with phase flip, but on the same track they sound different especially in high-end). I couldn't tell why, probably, there should be programmer perspective be involved. Maybe it's codecs or internal processing of the plugins while playback. I think key here is bounced calculations vs actual playback. Would be great to hear your opinion. ---------------------------------- And here are some quotes from members of a gearspace: robshrock I asked this same question not too long ago... aren't all digital EQs pretty damn similar? The answer: nope. But you'd need to chat with a serious coder to get into the how's and why's... beyond my interest level to fully understand from a programmer's POV. MogwaiBoy I've done blindtests between Crave and Pro-Q. Knowing the Q values differed, I matched settings (Digital / Analog / Transparent / Natural Phase etc) exactly in Plugindoctor, then put them back into the DAW and exported various tests, doing blind A/B's between them. Crave has more clarity than Pro-Q 2/3. You might say "they're both digital EQs, they are the same just different GUIs" - but I know what my ears are telling me. They sound different. monkeyxx I did a 2 day, exhausting shootout of Pro Q3, Crave EQ, and Toneboosters EQ4. You can never truly match them but I tried my best, using null testing. Pro Q3 seemed to narrow the stereo field just a tiny bit compared to Crave. Pro Q3 also has the tiniest bit of color in the midrange. But it's so so subtle. Crave felt really wide, solid, almost analog in a way... It had a thickening effect... ToneBoosters was the most flattering of them all in this particular test
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 жыл бұрын
Here's some food for thought: listen to a mix. Then, without changing anything, listen to the same mix again. You'll notice different things the second time around, right? Now do the same, but with the knowledge that *something* has changed: all those differences in what you perceive will now be attributed to that difference. It's just the way our brains work. You have to remember, a mix is just a single waveform. Ok, two for stereo. It's our brain that does all the processing to split it into drums, bass, guitars, vocals etc. and that's some heavy duty processing going on there. While I can't say for certain all those people you quote are wrong, I can say that every time I've investigated such claims I've not found any evidence to support them. It seems far more likely to me that this (well known and universal) cognitive bias is the real cause.

With some material a de cramped EQ will give you an airier, more open and natural sounding boost than a cramped EQ. It's not an issue otherwise, and cramping EQs are certainly not useless. But if I'm picking my go-to EQ that I reach for in all situations, its a deal breaker.

@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 2 ай бұрын
Make sure you have r8brain resampling selected for both playback and rendering in your project settings, and it probably won't do any harm. However it won't make much of a difference with respect to cramping. 96k is high enough for cramping to no longer matter, but even that doesn't actually remove it altogether, so going to 48 is kind of insignificant. It might make oversampling filters work a bit better though (especially Softube) so don't be scared to try it if you want. But switch to r8brain first if you're not already using it.

I'd be curious to hear a difference. FWIW, I do understand the point you made in the video. Just trying to understand the practical aspect of this

I guess it's possible that in a specific case the cramped response might sound better. But whenever I've heard a difference its been a more open, natural, airy sound from the decramped EQ, and I've always preferred it.

@@DanWorrall hi Dan the man! Is the reason you prefer de-cramped EQ in the air band is because it represents high frequencies more accurately due to the better phase response & anti-aliasing sound?
