You might think skating is just about what you do when you're actually on that little plank of wood, but what you do before you skate also has a big impact. There are certain things that help your skating, s there also has to be things that are going to make you skate worse.
In this one I'm going over five things you should avoid at the start of your session. And if you're new to the page then point number two might come as a surprise to you...
1. Avoid eating a big meal
2. Avoid static stretching
3. Avoid the slug warm up
4. Avoid not warming up at all
5. Avoid negative thinking

I've always been stiff unless I stretch first. I don't over do it, but I'm really skeptical about the science behind that because consistently over the entirety of my 20 years of skating, stretching (but not over stretching) has worked really well. In fact when I don't, consistently I am more likely to leave the session hurting. Now I'll agree that some light cardio paired with stretching is an even better combo, but stretching for me has always been hugely important and helpful.
@TheDailyPush
@TheDailyPush 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Skapo, have you tried warming up with some light cardio, then some dynamic stretches and muscle activation style things? I think static stretching could help you if you've been doing it so long and it becomes almost like a ritual, which it has for you right? The placebo effect is also a powerful thing so if you believe something will help, whatever it is, then it's highly possible that it does help you personally, even if the science says it doesn't. Regarding the science though, comparing static vs dynamic stretching, most research does show static stretching has a negative impact on performance (power, jump height, etc), but a dynamic warm up improves performance, and specifically for explosive sports like skating.
@Skapo
@Skapo 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheDailyPush Oh yeah totally. I've cross compared light vs extensive stretching, slow vs fast, light cardio vs heavy cardio, weight lifting alone, cardio + weight lifting, cardio + weight lifting + stretching; and all of the above in a ton of different combos specifically to try and figure out the best way to not walk away with stressed joints at the end of the day. I've been on a bit of a weight loss journey (currently hovering between 40-60lbs lost from 100lbs goal) using skateboarding as my main drive to keep going with it. As of right now, if I was aiming for an absolutely optimal skate session and assuming I knew it was gonna be a long session: 5 minutes slow dynamic stretching, 10-15 minutes cardio, 5-10 minutes slow static/dynamic stretching blend, & just a few squats or some slow but heavy weight/resistance movements. In a vacuum assuming I don't go to the gym first: slow static/dynamic stretching hybrid is better than cardio alone, but a bit of stretching + a bit of cardio + push around building up to more knee intensive stuff is where I'm currently at. I've actually given a lot of thought as to why that might be and have some theories range from selective inflexibility (I have great front to back flexibility, but horrible lateral flexibility which is necessary for proper form on a lot of tricks.) all the way to the time I take to do stretches. I don't really over strain my movement at all. I tend to build into my full range of stretched motion slowly rather than just being like "fuck it, let's get this over with so I can skate." I have dealt with knee strain since I was young so have become extra careful about my warmup process over time.

@@TheDailyPush As far as I know, the negative effects of static stretching you mentioned only last for >10min which means, that if you do some dynamic stuff after stretching, there won't be any negative effects at all ;)

Dude, you're great when it comes to training, I need your help! I've been trying to land the Straight 8 (kickflip, sw flip, nollie flip, Fakie flip, heelflip, sw heelflip, nollie heelflip and Fakie heelflip in a row) during two months! Most of times I land the first six flip variations and I fail with the seventh or eight one, I initially thought it was because my nollie and Fakie heels sucked. So I decided to start with the heelflips instead of the kickflips, but now I have the same issue than before, I land all heelflips but when I start with the kickflips I suck. IDK what to do! I've got new shoes, cleaned my griptape, I've dedicated sessions just to practice the weaker tricks (nollie and fakie) but nothing works! Today's session was even worse than the last one, didn't see any improvement... I'm so frustrated! Heeeeelp!
@TheDailyPush
@TheDailyPush 4 жыл бұрын
Ooph bro it's hard to say! I mean if you can do all the tricks separately and you can do them consistently, then the only other thing I can think of is that you might be getting tired (when you're tired/fatigued you won't skate so well). You could try leaving a little bit more time in between each trick to try and minimise fatigue. Hope that helps!

@TheDailyPush
@TheDailyPush 9 ай бұрын
Because you probably have done almost 100 squats popping all those tricks. Skating stresses the body in a way normal daily life doesn't so you've gotta get back into it slowly so the body can adapt to skating. Next session I would go for half the time and see how you feel the next day. If you aren't too sore, you hit a good intensity and you can gradually increase from there. If you're still extra sore, dial it back until you find a duration and intensity where you're not. Hope that helps!

The aspect of stretching...how or...when is the best time to stretch to gain more range of motion and flexibility? I just got a board, skated ONE session....and my legs are just fucking dead bro. All I did was relearn to Ollie (still a work in progress) amd ride , but damn man when I raise my legs they're in so much pain, and my push/pop calf muscle is tight AF and feels bad. So I feel like I need to stretch and idk do something to help this aspect if I want to continue. I haven't skated in years. I skated a 16 year old kid into early adult hood then stopped. I'm now 37, and feel like a grandpa when I get home from work. I'm super excited to do it all again, but literally can't even skate a 2nd day cause of how bad my range of motion is, and how sore everything got just after a day of what everyone else would probably consider doing nothing. I workout, I'm not in bad muscle strength shape but flexibility is garbage, and I think a big reason for how bad this first day got to me. I get that I'll probably eventually adapt more, just wondering if you know any vids or something that contain great routines to gain flexibility an stuff.
@TheDailyPush
@TheDailyPush Жыл бұрын
Hey man so first off it's normal to feel sore after doing any kind of exercise you're not used to, whether it's training in the gym, skating, rock climbing, anything, and especially if you massively increase the intensity out of nowhere (which is easy to do with skating). All the extra jumping and fast movements you do when you skate are the perfect recipe for a load of soreness if you're not used to them too. What's going to help you 1000x more than stretching is a combination of resistance training and progressively increasing the intensity of your skate sessions. Resistance training through large ranges of motions can increase flexibility just as well as stretching and has countless other benefits that will help you build resilience to better handle the stresses of skating. You'll also find that by doing the right exercises and gradually building your resilience to the different movements you do when you skate, soreness will naturally decrease. And then of course nothing prepares you for skating better than skating, but you've gotta be progressive with it. Expect a bit of soreness in the beginning and when you push the intensity more than what you used to, but if you're still really sore into day 2, you pushed it too hard. The goal is to figure what you can currently handle so you're not totally destroyed, and then gradually increase little by little different things in your session - eg duration, impact, etc. Hope that helps, let me know if you have questions! And if you're after some resistance training, I have some videos here on the channel and also some full skate-specific programs on the website www.thedailypush.com 🙌🙌 ps nutrition, sleep, recovery etc are also a big part of building resilience and not feeling destroyed and there's loads of stuff on those topics on the website and channel.
