My suggestion if you don’t know if your parents are homophobic or transphobic if to watch a tv show or movie with them that you know has lgbtq+ representation in it and see how they react (this can also be an opportunity for you to explain any terms they might not understand to help your coming out go smoother)

I'm really glad to have him as a friend. He's the only one in my real life I'm out to, because my family is kinda wierd with everything lgbt related. I'm planning on coming out to my other friends. Here's my problem. My mum knows I'm omnisexual and is very supportive, even my brother is gay. She loves the LGBTQ community but...when she started to get suspicious I might be trans ( more specifically a Demiboy in my case) she got mad? And said, oh your not a boy, it's all because kids at school are saying they are trans, I know your not trans I have birth to you. BUT THIS IS WHERE IS GETS WEIRD. I came out as non binary and my mum was open to it, and stuff. She uses my name sometimes ( very rarely, I'm too scared to correct) but rarely uses they them. But this was before I realised I was trans. So when I asked if she could you he/they ( mainly he) pronouns she went all defensive?! I'm so confused. I don't have any other family where I live. Well, my dad's side but there all abusers and transphobes and all that. We don't have any family friends that can help me. There's only one teacher at school who I know that is BEYOND SUPPORTIVE of gay , and trans kids. When she hears someone use gay as an insult she tells them of. She asked for our pronouns and preferred name if we are trans. But that's all. I have one LGBTQ friend, who I don't know well, and one good friend who is an Ally. Soooo not that much support ahaha. I love my mum but I'm just confused why she won't accept me being demiboy

She raised me as a girl and she will see me as a girl. I came out to her thinking she would be equally supportive of me as she was everyone else but this was not the case. Since I still live under her roof, I basically told her I would pretend my coming out never happened. I have homophobic and transphobic parents and I’m both pansexual and genderqueer .-. It honestly scares me to come out but I want to my freshman year if hs (abt 2 yrs) But I’m scared of what will happen and I’m scared they won’t believe or will just not care and invalidate me by not accepting me and not using they/them pronouns But I have to do it one day and in the end, I don’t have to give them an explanation to why I’m who I am today Bc I was born this way and they can either accept it or I’ll find a safer environment to stay ✌️😗

idk if you care but i actually came out to my older sister that i thought was homophobic-? it was actually a month ago. I mean she kind of is but anyways. She would always say disgusting things about the LGBTQ+ community. My parents do fully support btw. I had wanted to tell her so many times but like you get the picture, anyways when i told her, she had said that it's okay and if its what i believe then its okay, she just doesn't believe in it- she also said she knew- which my parents said the same thing. owo

Tip for testing the ice before coming out that I’ve used - say you are doing an experiment and ask your friends + family stuff like “what do you think about the lgbtq+ community?” and “what do you think about global warming?” (mix things up a bit so’s not to arouse suspicion!) If they respond positively, it is probably fairly safe to come out :) ❤

Same. I'm still a kid who is only 12. I was born a female, but I've regularly wished that I was a boy. I even truly feel like a boy on the inside and am generally kinda a tomboy who does stereotypical boy stuff like video games, love boy clothes, no makeup, etc. I don't really like stereotypical girl stuff like dresses, makeup, the list goes on. (I'm not trying to be stereotypical I'm just explaining it like society.) I just heard in one of these videos that gender identity is what you feel like on the inside. The only problem is that I have homophobic Christian parents and am in a secret straight relationship that I realized might not work anymore. I legit started crying and literally panicking right now over this. My parents and practically everyone I know irl is openly homophobic and I don't think I can go to a therapist about it because when my mom forced me to go to a therapist for anxiety it was painful and I got out and besides my parents would be in the room. I'm freaking trapped here. I hope I can possibly make a little bit off of KZfaq and then come out as an adult and if it's bad I can escape or I can just wait until my parents learn to not be homophobic anymore. My life is on the flip side now... Sorry for this long comment that turned really emotional.

I wanted to come out yesterday because I am doing an activism writing after school thing, and I picked lgbtqia+ rights for my topic, and the instructor asked why I chose it, I had to lie. and today in English we read a part of a book called the 57 bus, which caused me to have a panic attack, I wanted to tell my teacher why but I cannot. I'm internally screeching because of this, thanks for the tips.

Hey I have a question! I'm not gay or anything, but I support the LGBTQ+ community. Recently, an ex-friend of mine has come out as being transgender, and I wasn't too hot about it. I soon apologized and I thought we were good, but apparently he lied. He and his friends keep harassing me saying that I'm transphobic and shit when I'm not. DO you guys have any advice? I just thought I'd come here because you guys are from the LGBTQ+ community, and would probably know how to handle a situation like this? Sounds stupid, I know. But, love you guys and I wish you the best lives!

I saw some people saying that they came out to their parents not knowing that their parents were lgbt-phobic so some more really important things: 1) if you have never explicitly told your parents that you are lgbt+ but have also done nothing to hide it (for example referring to anyone who you may potentially date as “partner” rather than girlfriend/boyfriend) and your parents continue to refer to anyone who you may potentially date as girlfriend/boyfriend DO NOT come out to them. They are being unsupportive by ignoring you not hiding that you are lgbt+. 2) no one knows your parents better than you. Everyone in your life may tell you that they are accepting people, but if you get the feeling that they aren’t DO NOT come out to them. 3) it is possible for parents to be accepting of lgbt people in general but to not be accepting of their child being gay. Even if your parents aren’t openly homophobic doesn’t mean you don’t have to be cautious.
