Jocko I just wanted to thank you for putting your leadership expertise out here on the internet. I've read your book "Extreme Ownership" and it has made my life so much better. I went into a meeting with my manager and director in an attempt to resolve some workplace tension. I took extreme ownership to the point where the focus was completely on me. This meeting could have been very ugly, but instead it ended with handshakes and with brand new bridges having being built. Thank you for encouraging me to get after it, and thank you for being a straight up badass.

Relationships can only be built with your people out of genuine care and concern for them. I learned this with my Marines and the same applies to people in general. Leadership is about the whole person -- including their life OUTSIDE of their role at work. What Jocko is touching on is authentic leadership, which has a decent amount of literature out there on it. Building the relationship means asking questions, listening, giving respect, having humility and checking your ego -- all things Jocko has hit on in past podcasts. He nails it, as usual.

Sometimes you just have to humble yourself and go a little out of your way to let people know that you care about them even if they don't like you to much ... because ik I'm a little over sensitive and if I get the feeling that someone doesn't like me my first instinct is to kind of put my nose in the air and let them know that IDC if they do not like me and really that is just insecurity and weakness and the truth is that I probably read the situation wrong and they didn't have a problem with me until I started putting my nose in the air.....so I realised that at the end of the day I still actually cared about that person so I needed to humble myself and not let the way that I percieved them effect the way that I oporate I the world....

It's best to let relationships take their natural course as recommended. The issue is, when trying to force it, it's hard not to give subtle signals of your intentions (even if they're good), and this can come across when interacting with people. It's best to find natural places of conversation with others
@rossgooding74234 жыл бұрын
Great comment. And to follow up on this--a natural place of conversation often follows from shared interests: you are both interested in the same thing, or maybe doing similar things, say, like both at the gym, museum, ball game, etc... common/shared interests provide a natural connector (so long as you are genuine and a skilled enough communicator)..

Temporary Kinda be true to yourself, do not be codepend, that is an invitation for people to abuse you. Stronghearted people are too hard to control. YOU CAN DO THAT, because you realise and admit your problems. Know yourself is to know your value, you are gold! Have a great day and a fantastic journey!

@armorsmith434 жыл бұрын
Temporary Kinda the key isn’t to passively “just be yourself” nor to focus strictly on trying to make friends The key is to find people that already want to win in the same way you already do, then build the friendship on that. Be genuine, which means being willing to be dorky and enthusiastic about whatever you’re doing because looking cool matters less than having a great time and winning together

But not all, if you have the genuine intention of making a woman happy. At the other end of the spectrum a hyper conscientious person might think that they are using someone even when they're not. Women are also into sex and love.

Whatever you force upon people is going to backfire to you. If true love/respect backfires most of the times, surely will the use of force. Kindness is the only thing that a man truly possess in this world, no one has an account here, period. That is a fact!
@aikishugyo4 жыл бұрын
Awesome to be able to separate out the difference between manipulation and leadership in respect of building relationships. And that there is a dichotomy in all these things (manipulative leadership brown-nosing) Caring about the other people being a baseline for communication sounds good to me (as opposed to crappy leadership where the team is treated like crap and the mission still needs to be accomplished by imposed authority).

@@Mrpulkitvmehta14 After having a slightly negative transaction with a young female retail clerk I decided to read some feminist books at the book store. I photographed the most useful ones to buy on Amazon Kindle. Then I purchased a book on warfare history for martial arts. I want to adopt these principles in my life. I am using quietness, formal civility and avoidance when dealing with younger educated women these days. It is a better strategy.
@meta1gear44 жыл бұрын
Yeah but sometimes, no matter how good your intentions are towards the group, the backstabbers that screw you over will win. Only thing to do at that point is to walk away and rebuild yourself and find a better group of people.
@justinfreeman46144 жыл бұрын
I would also like to hear the podcasts thoughts on this. I have often observed that deliberate manipulators pull out ahead of even hard chargers who put mission and team first. Like...a majority of the time.
@clif.c.29064 жыл бұрын
Things always balance in the end. Principle of the universe.
@meta1gear44 жыл бұрын
The problem is that if the group revolves around the manipulators, it was a worthless group to begin with regardless of a few good people present. I always looked out for my friends but turns out that the best friend that I had confided everything in had been having a thing with my ex for months behind my back. I totally lost it and left. All the group wants to do is ignore all the wrong that was committed and move on while being friends with everyone. Pathetic I know but I realized that hanging out in such a weak group to begin with was my own fault. Regardless, my life is so much better now. I feel bad for saying a lot of horrible stuff to my ex though but still, she had it coming. Better to get out of toxic groups than live a lie with them and later have them stab you in the back in more serious scenarios.
