We get a ton of questions on how to avoid shoulder and pectoral injuries here on the channels and in this video, we're addressing those. So many people think the bench press is a chest exercise and while that is true, it should be considered a secondary muscle group in the firing chain. Matt Wenning takes you through how to ensure your bench movement is setup right!

Could you please talk about the mechanics of shoulders/scapula on upper back and tricep exercises? Is it usually a good idea to maintain retracted scapula during humoral movement, the way you recommend on bench press, or are there way to many exceptions to that rule to make a general recommendation?

Your shoulders are externally rotated so it's much easier on shoulder impingement, and you will activate the chest more than everything. But, the regular pause bench press is the alpha and is what Matt would be referring to.

Although the grip idea seems good in principle what if the narrower grip doesn't allow you to squeeze your shoulder blades together properly or lower the bar with your lats? Just cant seem to get it to work properly to engage my back the way it works with a max grip width.

I had been putting lots of works on bench press for lifting heavier, but nothing really happened until I gave up training on chest, and started focus on triceps and shoulders. Maybe chest being the prime mover is just a cliche, anyhow, I did see from other sources indicating that the muscle mass of triceps and shoulders are both much more than chest, like 1.5 time. If that holds true, it makes sense why it's more effective.
