Flatground is one of the most rewarding things to skate. Especially if you want as much control as possible. I owe most of the skill I've acquired to the countless hours I spent, skating flatground with the Hollywood High Krew.
These days, I see lots of young skaters neglect their flat ground, and try to take tricks they've only landed a few times to a gap, or stair set. In my opinion, this is a massive mistake. Here, I explain why.

My problem is that I’m actually obsessed with flat ground and I’m not above skating flat ground for hours in the parking lot of a skatepark

Flatground is really all you need. Maybe some curb tricks, and a few quarter pipe moves. You can have fun for a lifetime. Thank you 🙏🏾

Greetings Brother. This is my first time watching your channel. I am deeply sorry to hear about your staph infection. Just remember to stay hydrated those meds tend to give you dry mouth. I remember when I started skating back in December of 1990. I was living in New Jersey at the time and the day I got my first board the weather forecast predicted snow for the next three days. The next day I remember sitting in my room playing Nintendo hoping the snow would stop and then it dawned on me. The basement, I wasn't sure if my mom would let me skate down there but to my surprise she said yes. It had really smooth concrete flooring, so it was perfect to learn on. Long story short, Once the snow melted, I was ready to hit the streets. It must have been in the 30 plus degrees outside, but I didn't care one bit. I already had just the basic fundamentals I needed just to cruise the streets and it felt amazing. Just pure freedom. So yes, flat ground no matter where you find or use it, it doesn't matter. It is ground zero where every trick that one does starts from and then overtime it evolves into so much more. Take it one day at a time brother and I sincerely hope that those antibiotics knock out that infection. That is so awesome that Alexis Sablone has her own shoe out. I remember watching her at Dew Tour back in the day. She is not only an excellent skater but very intelligent as well. I heard that she graduated from an Ivy College as an architect.

loved this video! this makes me feel a lot better about mostly skating flatground. i don't skate obstacles much because of my fear for them, but skating flat always helps with my confidence to try something new. gonna work on landing 10 heelflips right now because of this!! also, i hope you recover quickly!!!

Same here bruh same here. Like I rlly wanna skate ledges and rails but my skating and fear just isn’t there. Trying to learn curbs and flat ground is so much easier for me and I find it fun trying to work out different tricks or finding out how to perfect things.

Hey Norm. This is amazing advice, and I’ve been feeling the same way. But I needed to hear it too, because I forget too fast. Just dropping down my board and hearing the bearing cooking just to ollie over a sidewalk panel translates to the street. I also had a really funny spill this way a few days ago when I missed my board and ended up kicking a light post mid fall. I’d been daydreaming about this obstacle that is like two ramps with a flat runup in the middle and a shootout rail on one side and a shootout ledge on the other. Just running up a ramp, dropping the board on flat and ollie’ing over the other side like a set. Got to do it the other day and it felt amazing. Also…Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you gotta stop skating on that ankle for it to heal. I’m not even ashamed in taking days and days off haha. If you don’t aggravate it, you’ll wake up healed in 2 weeks at most for most sprains. Once we’re on a board, it’s all business again. I always remind myself that once I’m not on a board, I’m not skating. Sometimes my board rolls away and I don’t even hustle. It’s like skate mode off. If that makes sense at all… I let my eagerness communicate only thru my skating. Ps. I’ve always been scared of staph, heal well man. If you ever need quick medical attention for an injury, faster than the ER and not that serious. You can always look for an urgent care.

Truth! I'd been neglecting flat over the past couple months because I was so focused on rails and ledges, but getting back to it now gives me more confidence for the other stuff, especially the flip-in tricks.

Today I was at the park and I met this guy. He told me about you and your videos. I'm 31 and I skated when I was younger. Stopped in my early 20s just started back about a month ago. I haven't been through all of your videos yet but I'm finding your words helpful. I've only been skating again solid for a month now. One thing for me, for example. I can't kickflip stationary. But If I ride to a bank with speed, I have more confidence when kickflipping and I've actually gotten close to landing it. My attempts at learning kickflips when I was younger led me to accidentally learn varial kickflips, so I'm better at those on flatground when I can't kickflip flatground period. I'm not sure if I'm learning weird or out of order but I'm just doing what is comfortable for me. I'm also doing reps on flatground, 50 solid ollies, 25 nollie backside shuvs, ect.

I'm 37 been skating for about 1.5 years and I love flat ground but it's very hard lol 😆. I do mix in mini ramp skating and skating other obstacles. I used to not really like mini ramp skating but I'm finding it a lot easier and I have more tricks on transition than flat ground. On mini ramp I have axle stall, backside/frontside 5050 grind, 5-0 stall, tail stall, nose stall, backside disaster, fakie 5050 stall and grind, fakie 5-0 stall, and some others but on flat I only have fakie ollie, switch ollie, both pop shuvs, both 180s, decent manual, and heelflip. Working on kickflips but they are kicking my butt. Just landed my first back boardslide on a round rail yesterday. Went a good 6'+ on the rail too.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods Ай бұрын
It’s hard to concentrate on flatground in the beginning. You have to mix it up. But, once you have enough tricks, practicing them on flatground is key. That way, when you move a trick to an obstacle, your focus can be on overcoming that obstacle. Rather than the focus being on executing the trick. Nice! Holding a Boardslide, after only 1.5 years is good progress. The mini ramp stuff of also key for beginners, since you get your entire body involved. It’ll loosen you up.

@@NormanWoods Thanks for the props on the boardslide, I've been scared of that trick since I was a kid and seeing someone slip out backwards and break their wrist. I'm having such a hard time with some technical adjustments to level up my flatground: weight distribution, timing, and actually jumping up instead of just bringing my knees up. I tend to shift my weight at the last second in some direction, mostly towards my front foot but sometimes to the back foot or forwards or backwards. Sometimes I will try to flick or manipulate the board too soon, like before the pop a lot. I also built a bad habit of popping up and just lifting my knees instead of getting my hips up so that I have more time to flick the board before my knees are tucked up too much. Are you still doing video review lessons for members?

i think as i’ve gotten older i’ve become more put off by flatground at times because oddly enough i find that i damages my shoes more than any other skating. i always want to practice flatground more cause it was such a staple part of skating as a kid but always get pulled more into miniramp, ledge, or flatbar skating

I know skating flatground is important but I always get backache when I do a flatground only session, on top of that I have rolled my ankle many times skating flatground as opposed to when skating obstacles at the park or in the streets. Seems like I can’t focus fully when skating flatground somehow i forget I could still get hurt even doing basic flip tricks on flat.
