It may be much better for the health of your dog to delay when you spay or neuter your puppy. New research published from UC Davis, suggests waiting to at least 1 year for most dogs, and with some dogs better to wait until 2 years of age.

The problem I ran into with my dog is: I waited until he was two and then approached a vet to have him fixed. They told me because of his age, he would have to go through a whole bunch of tests and blood test and, it would, in the end cost me over 3,000.00. I decided to let him keep his equipment than pay the ridiculous price. He is 14 now, and still is intact.

Yet my grandparents lab who never got spayed lived to age SEVENTEEN & was still around 💪when she has an accident & passed. It’s hearing stories like yours that I feel confident in helping my dog stay healthy and for him to live a long life. He’s also staying intact and when I begun training him more seriously, using lots of treats and impulse control, he is now a dream to walk! I thought maybe neutering him would alter his impulse control, wrong. That would’ve been the worst reason to take out a pet’s reproductive organ.

First thing the lady on the phone said was that we will have to pay for blood work if we change our mind to get her spayed at a later date. After all my research and listening to your video, we as a family didn’t want to put our dog through any pain and take the chances of her getting diseases. We don’t plan on breeding and will deal with her being in heat.

My miniature poodle boy is now 3 years old. His veterinarians are so stunned that I did not automatically schedule a neuter for him. They also view me with great disdain because I don't use heartworm toxins (we don't have that species of mosquito where we live and actually no mosquitoes because of our dry climate) or flea/tick (don't have any flea problems and these products don't prevent tick biting and transmitting anyway) and that he is fed a species appropriate, human grade, balanced, superb carnivore diet.He is vibrantly healthy and has not behavior "problems". I would bet money that my dog is healthier than 90% of their chemical laden, fixed, kibble fed specimens and yet all of them actually think that I am the bad owner. I titered for Parvo and Distemper after the third puppy series vaccine instead of automatically vaccinating him with a booster at a year after the first three shots. He was off the charts in antibody for Parvo and very sufficiently high in antibody for Distemper which proved that he had vibrant, active immunity and yet the one vet at the practice told me "We don't know how to interpret titers so you will need to monitor him closely and vaccinate if we see a drop in antibody for either of these two diseases". WRONG! He may not know how to interpret titer but that does not mean that I or the rest of us have turned off our brains. Concerning de-sexing, I can always have him neutered in the future if some behavior or physical problem arrises that would be predicted to respond to neutering. Turns out that in Europe, owners don't fix their dogs and the veterinarians do not recommend doing so.

it is more about the corn, the kibbel, the dry food etc. the dogs have. I have lived in North Africa and stray dogs never had shots, ate whatever, never were spayed or neutered, roamed the streets, and lived long healthy lives. I ve never seen a dog with a lump or a grave issue. they hardly even suffered from fleas and ticks. How, who knows, all i know is that i grew up watching many of them thrive.

How was the food situation? Did the people feed them?
@aksil.abelgharbi6497
@aksil.abelgharbi6497 3 жыл бұрын
@@kathidori8504 Yes, we always made sure that whatever left over went to the animals outside, cats, dogs, birds etc. we always provided water and food. The dogs and cats had their hotspots and knew where to go on each occasion for food. years ago, even now, dogs frequented the Souk, a weekly market where merchants brought their goods and also butcheries, restaurants etc. and all town dogs went to that market only on tuesdays, and the rest of the days, they go to some restaurants, and homes, scavenging. Dog food concept as in dry food was not a thing, all animals ate organic, we were poor farmers who lived on the produce of the farm. I remember all our dogs ate left overs, everything from fish heads, bones, cooked meals, legumes etc. they were very healthy dogs. They have never got shots, and they had almost no ticks or fleas. but that is just in our village, i do not know about the rest of the country. But animals have rights in Islam and people make sure they are fed and given what they can. Sadly, now, the city halls shoot them to lower their numbers, and honestly their numbers and no that high, it is just the corrupt politicians who happen to be rich do not like dogs barking at night. The rest of the people, the farmers, the villagers, are used to dogs barking, and howling, and cats fighting, and what not, you know typical wildlife sounds, it is a very normal thing. But these Frenchized rich people are bothered and push city halls to shoot them, and sometimes they do it themselves. sadly, in Morocco there are no animal rights, although the government pretends to be islamic, which is contradictory, islam says creatures, from trees to insects are nations like we are, and they have as much and equal rights. Farmers and day to day people respect animals and appreciate them becuase they know that without their partnership one may not have survived, animals do us and did us lots of favor, and indigenous north africans acknowledge and respect that and do their best they have healthy happy lives. But the government and colonial mentality frenchized Moroccans are the worst, abuse and kill dogs all the time, poisoning and shooting them.

And you should talk about vets and over vaccinations. My vet wanted to give the rabies vaccine yearly but the practice had put the bottle label on my receipt, and it said it was good for 3 years. I refused the next year and she said I had to. I raised unholy hell with the Canadian vet association and the dept of agriculture, and enough screaming got the schedule changed to every 3 years. Best age: never! In fact, spay/neuter is actually illegal in Norway, except for when medically necessary, and they don't have a pet overpopulation problem ;) I know someone whose puppy had bladder control issues. I advised her to not spay, or at least delay spaying, but the shelter kept hounding her for proof of spay, so she got it done... Well, that puppy never got control of her bladder, and also developed aggression and anxiety, to the point where she gave the dog up for fear it might hurt her child. Best age: never. My late standard poodle was spay at 8 months and suffered from 2 ACLS injuries and Cushings. I feel that those were directly liked to her early spaying. I have a 16.5 month old, pure bred long-haired German Shepherd now, about 100 lbs. and when she was seen at 3 months, the vet suggested I get her spay at 6 months because "it would be easier for them and cheaper for me". I found her rationale lazy, and not caring for the dog's long term health. When I mentioned growth plates, etc., she said she'd heard that was "going around the internet", but was not true. I didn't go back to this vet, and she was a recent graduate. Thanks for bringing this up!

Instead of spay or neuter what other ways can we sterilize our fur babies. For female's diapering, making sure she is not housed with any male. As for males guess we just leave them. I have heard of spaying females like we do women with tribal ligation only cutting and closing the tubes. For males cutting the cord that has the sperm as in human males. If this is done what are the consequences for the animals. IE - testicular cancers for males and ovarian cancers, cancer of the uterus etc....do we take out the uterus and only leave the ovaries so we have the hormones???

I’m a little upset with my vet as I followed his advice. Now he is blaming her incontinence on being overweight. But I did everything he recommended. She’s a Great Pyrenees, so she’s going to be big. I have 3 giant breed males. One is neutered of the 3 and we rescued him 3 years ago and he already was. The other 2 are younger and intact. Cooper is going to be 3 years old in May and our youngest, Ozzie is going to be 7 months tomorrow. I have a black, blue merel, and a harliquin Great Dane. I've owned danes for over 15 years but recently heard this information within the past few years. Told to wait unti 18-24 monthsof age ATLEAST!!! Their sex organs are to also regulate growth and other very important functions. One of our past danes who was 8 years old, (thats quiet old for a Dane)actually was in complete good health and then fell one day running and couldnt get up. Took him to the vet and they initially listened to our story of him falling and gave pain and inflammatory drugs. Then sent us home. 3 weeks later he was still limping and now was holding up his back leg also...then what seemed to be overnight....there was a tumor on his hind leg. Took him back to the vet. said he had osteosarcoma(bone cancer) and that it was very aggressive and was in the late stages...they wanted us to put him down right then and there bc of the amount of excruciating pain this particular disease causes to our poor babies. I was selfish and couldnt but got strong pain meds to take him home for a few days (less than a week) to say goodbye to him and digest that what I thought was my completly healthy dog was near death just rocked my world, turned everything upside down. He lived his entire life with hip dysplasia but we managed it so he was pain-free for the most part. The best thing we could have done was exercise him. I guess I'm rambling a little bit but yes there's studies that you can read about showing you the data that they have on this and you can decide for your own pets but if you can avoid your pets living in pain and dying at a younger age possibly? Why wouldn't you do that? I truly believe if he was not neutered before 6 months or at 6 months that I would have had him a few more years. Also for the working breeds I do believe that if you neuter before 6 months that they're not as muscular and filled out as they would be if you waited until they were approximately two years old because of the testosterone. Do your research and yes it's important to spay and neuter because of the overpopulation of dogs in the world but we want them to live a healthy happy life also so due diligence do your research

Thank you for these comments. I have a Pomeranian female who is 8 years old and has not been spayed. So far she shows no health concerns and she does eat some of our table food but has not gotten sick or reacted to it yet but she does react to dog cakes made for pets so we don’t feed her that. I was really worried when my sister told me it’s dangerous for a dog to not get neutered or spayed and they can die painfully from not getting it. However I really want to do my diligence and it seems like there is only a probability these consequences will happen but doesn’t mean they will happen. Also just because it reduces the chances of infection there seems to be side effects that opens to other health risks for my dog. It was the cost for the procedure that made my Mom postpone her spay but I found the Humane Society in my area does it cheaper than the vet so if she really needs it I’m willing to pay for it. I just wants what’s best for her at this age. Pomeranians on average live from 12-16 years old. I hope she lives as long as she can with us.

My youngest, 3 years old will not be neutered. He has no skin or ear issues or GI issues. He got 3 puppy series Parvo/Distemper/Adeno and then I refused the 4th booster they insisted he needed a year from the 3rd shot-- I titered him and he has robust antibody levels to Parvo and Distemper-- I plan to never vaccinate him for these disease again just as I do not for my other dogs. For rabies, I waited to give him the first vaccine until he was a 1 1/2 (he is only 14 lbs) and then I gave the booster a year later (thimerisol free). Luckily, he did not get a reaction. I will titer him in 3 years only to have a record of his immunity. He is not registered.

UC Davis worked with the breeder of our Great Danes and we had to sign a contract not to neuter our dog till he was two years old. After losing our first Dane at 5 to osteosarcoma and she was spaded at 6 months. But she was from a different breeder. We did a lot of research with this breeder and the fact that her dogs for a living to be 9-10 years old was also a key feature. So I was happy to do what the recommended and wait. If it gives me more Quality time with the breed I love.

Why not hedge your bets and wait until he is older than two? Lots of examples of dogs of related breeds left intact and living to 15 or so. Why not leave him intact to at least 6 and if he shows no behavior problems just not doing it?

I waited until 3 years for my large breed male Newfoundland/poodle. I regret it all the time. I won't be doing it for my other dogs. He was so much more energetic, excitable for trianing and actually less weary then he is now. Since his neuter he's become more easily started, easily Barking at noises that be never did before. And he was fully developed and grown at 3 years. I can't even imagine neuter for a BABY dog.

Stop unwanted pregnancies by getting your male dog a vasectomy and your female dog a partial spay. A partial spay involves removing the uterus, but not the ovaries. The surgery is much safer, because the main arteries are located after the ovaries. While your dog still comes into heat every six months (or so), she doesn't give off much of a scent to attract males because the scent is produced in the uterus. Also, she doesn't bleed during heat without a uterus. It is the best of all options. I don't want a eunuch for a dog - I want a male or female dog. And that is what I get.

My previous GSD was spayed at a few months old because the vet recommended surgery for a navel hernia and why not spay at the same time. She developed severe elbow dysplasia that was so bad her joints were fused solid. Adequan injections was the only treatment that gave her a nearly normal life, along with pill supplements. This was nearly 20 yrs ago but at least today we have more info to work with. The breeder of my young English labrador recommends to wait until at least two yrs for neutering ....IF at all. I’m keeping an open mind so haven’t made any decision on it yet since he’s only a yr old.

First of all thank you very much for making these videos they're very informative . May I ask a question I have a four year old female heeler, I've had her since 8 weeks old Her first year she came into heat twice(March and NOVEMBER ) Her second year she came into heat once .(February) Her third year she did not come into heat. She turned four in February and she still has not come into heat. She is beside or within 15 feet of me 24/7 Her health is great her coat is great her ears mouth teeth everything is great she's regular in her bowel movements and urine outtake. She drinks plenty as she has fresh water available all the time, and I pack her and I pack water on our walks or bike trips. she eats a cup and a half of dry dog food a day. She's up on all her shots I give all them to her, except for rabies and I take her to the vet for rabies shots. I've had two other healers in my lifetime that died of healthy old age but they had regular heat cycles. I have never had her bred and don't want to, and I've never had her around a male dog. She is around my daughter's three other female dogs at least three times a week, and they come in too heat regularly. Gee I'm long-winded today 😂 My question Should she be having a heat twice a year ?

It’s very hard to listen to this video because it brings back the pain of losing my sweet dog Diamond, a purebred standard Collie. She was only 8 years old when she passed. By the time I received Diamond, she had already been spayed, close to her first birthday. Fast forward 7 years and she passed away with complications from Cushing’s disease. The vet acted like Cushing’s was a mysterious disease that had no origin. What the vet did not tell me was that it was endocrine related and that Diamond should never had been spayed in the first place! Of course, it was years later through my research, heartache, and tears that I discovered this information. The only good thing that came from this is that I am a current well-informed, question-asking pet parent who doesn’t just take the vet’s word on everything he/she says. Dr. Jones, thank you for this video and thank you for your honesty and integrity!!! Keep up the good work!! God bless you!

Another great video. Do you know if there has been a study connecting DCM to sterilization? Since the early deaths of my beloved Doberman(s) I've tried to educate myself by reading about spaying and neutering and understanding the physiology of it all. These are my concerns. When we sterilize our pets we remove the ovaries and testis. Ovaries and testis are responsible for the lifelong health of muscles, joints, bone growth (and many other things). I call them the "body's regulators". The heart is a muscle. Could sterilization effect the heart muscle?

When I was in my late 20s through late 30s, I lived in the middle of a National forest, WAY off grid and had only wolf hybrids for my canine companions. I only has planned visits by my small circle of friends. Long story short, it became obvious that I should not be breeding the hybrids and selling some of the pups. Wolf hybrids require very specific homes and very responsible owners. I kept a male and a female pup and got them both fixed. I did not get the parents fixed. The altered pups grew into fat, lazy, destructive killers of my farm animals. My Alfa male and female were excellent protectors of my critters. The altered two offspring also started biting unexpected visitors. I ultimately had to euthanize them both. But, I didn't want to have any more litters. It started out with my Alfa Red Wolf male. He somehow came into range of a mean old man that shot any canine he came across. Brutus came home with a gunshot wound that damaged his urinary tract. I took him to a special Vet that wasn't afraid of hybrids. Brutus loved the Vet. He required surgery to repair his wound. I asked the Vet if he would be willing to give Brutus a vasectomy, instead of a neuter. The Vet was very willing and eager to do this operation in conjunction with the wound repair. Brutus came back as the same loving, loyal boy. He had his testicles and he bred Kali every time she came into heat. But no conceptions occurred. About a year later I called my normal vet and asked if she would do a hysterectomy on Kali, yet leave her ovaries intact. I had to do some serious debating, but because on numerous occasions I had brought horses in with issues that the Vet didn't believe I knew what I was talking about but I was proven correct eat occasion, she agreed to do the hystorectomy. Kali still had heat cycles, but with no blood discharge. Her vulva would swell and apparently she smelled like any other bitch in heat. Brutus would tie with Kali, but again, no viable pregnancies. Those two were my last hybrids and they had long healthy lives without any issues. They both still protected my infant, my livestock and chased off bears, cougars, coyotes bobcats, racoons, etc. To this day I have never spayed or neutered any of my canine companions. I've never had an unplanned pregnancy or litter. I've also never had cancers, allergies, ear mites or any health issues. My dogs have lived long healthy active lives clear up to when they lay down to sleep and passed away in their dreams. I've never found any other vets who would perform a vasectomy or a tubal ligation or removal of the uterus and leave the ovaries intact. I wish some highly respected veterinarians would do some studies and publish the results. I do get my male kittens neutered around a year old. I can't stand the smell of cat spray. My few female unspayed cats have never had surprise litters because I live so far out, there are no stray Tom's to show up and to impregnate the girls. Just wanted to share. PS: for the past ten years, any new pups or kittens I have, get their 3 rounds of baby shots, one booster a year later, and never any more vaccinations. Again, I've never had cancers, tumors, arthritis or illnesses. I have a rescue cat that was a big cranky Tom when I rescued him. He was a middle age boy. I got him neutered, vaccinated and a rabies. I've had him for 5+ years. I've no idea of his age but he's missing a lot of his tiny front teeth on tip and bottom. But his fangs are still there, healthy and white. Peanut became a total love bug and meows or scrapes at the door to go out and potty. He will only use the litter box if he gets left inside and I'm gone for hours. He's wonderful. Taught my new kitten to do the same. He's a little chunky but he's always been a huge cat. The only issue is that he has weepy/crusty eyes for a couple of years. I'd like to fix that but I have no clue what causes it or how to clear it up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The closest vet is an hour+ drive south. I love your videos and share many of them on my Facebook feed. You are the best.

This round he also started acting aggressive to younger intact males, does neutering fix that too? I never planned on having him fixed unless I thought it would be better for him, I don’t mind the whining and keeping him leashed. He turns 3 in October and I was thinking of donating his manly marbles this summer, but if it doesn’t help with the issues above he can keep’m.

I've been saying this for so long and now it was proven to me when I got my chocolate lab rescue home at 12 weeks old and he was already neutered at 11 weeks! The rescue will not release them unless they have them neutered. Now he is showing signs of incontinence. He does his business mostly in one spot but as he walks away he is still drizzling urine all over his inner thighs and feet. Then when he comes into the house and lays down he drips a little bit more. It's so frustrating. The vet thinks that it is just because he is so young and still has to develop. I hope that is the case.

This is basically universal for most rescues which is totally understandable since they are the dealing with the repercussions of overpopulations and unwanted pets. It’s not cut and dry. Many areas where these rescues work are not affluent enough to expect people to follow through with altering their rescues so it’s a matter of saving and rehousing as many as possible. In light of the risk of having to euthanize unwanted pets because of the lack of resources, these rescues are really doing the best they can.

The first heat cycle was like observing two lustful people in love. This cycle is much more relaxing for me as well as them. The difference in size is big. She will let him hump her back but will not let him near her opening nor let him touch/sniff it. She will immediatly sit down. I would like to read information regarding both male and female cycles. Unfortunately he developed a hernia on one side of his rectum at age 8. This was a big surgery to take care of. They said it was because he was not neutered. I think it was just unfortunate though,and if I get another dog,I will not have it surgically altered. He was neutered at the time of the surgery as it was told to me,not neutering would probably lead to him herniating on the other side. I did not want to chance another surgery for him,so I went ahead and did it,even though I was not sure.

We didnt neuter our female dog at all, never had a proplem at all in 11 years. The younger dog, now 4 years, is doing just fine, too, with all her parts in place. It's only the last 2 days of her heat, when we have to keep her on the leash.
