Yeah but this isn't at all the real message of don't try. He completely misinterpreted it. He first saw it and found it upsetting, so he overcompensated by applying the first logical explanation he could. It's much more about flow state and religious themes like "lean not on your own understanding".

I love his headstone because, just like I'm sure he thought would happen, ppl completely misunderstand it. Bukowski never tried to do any of the things he did. He never tried he just did it. Because he was doing what he wanted. He was trying to do anything, be anyone, or accomplish any feat. He wrote for the sake of writing and for the sake of saying what he really felt and thought. Yes, he sent out his works and writing but if it didn't work out he didn't give a flying fuck. He wrote because he couldn't help but write. The years he didn't write he damn near killed himself. When he spent the rest of his days always writing, he survived one of the most severe cases of alcoholism in the art world. Because art is the oil the burns within us to constantly drive the artist towards his unknown destination. Bukowski never convinced himself that he was less than if he didn't achieve some sort of arbitrary societal status because that's who he was. A blue collar grunt, who lived his life based on the reality at hand and nothing else, no delusions and no selfish desires, just unapologetically himself, and fortunately for us he decided to share what he wrote because why the fuck not. I love that the creator of this video understood what he really meant and was really all about. Phenomenal piece, my friend! Remember my brothers and sisters, Don't try. Do.

It's crazy that so many great artist find success when they already "old" or after their life. It's like we think we have to be something or someone in our early twenties. And if we're "nothing" or we didn't achieve what we wanted, we are a failure. We think our life is over when we're older, so we try hard and work harder when we're younger. It's crazy that we have to choose who we are going to be by 18, as in, what's going to be my future job and life. And after college or when we get a stable job in our late 20's we believe we're done, we figured it all out. We usually give up our dreams by then, because we're too old or it's too late or we should focus on different things like marriage, family etc. What I'm trying to say is, do what you love you're never too old. And even if it feels like nobody is appreciates your work, some day someone will.

@@ramenaddict1676 Media, particularly in North America, love to hyperfocus on the "outliers", whether precocious kids, oddball actors, athletes who seemingly have superpowers, the highschool geek who becomes one of the richest men in the world, or Oprah. Why? The obvious answer is that most media is commercial, and therefore it must attract as wide an audience as it can to serve up to advertisers, and any emotionally-charged variation on the freakshow theme will generally serve to do this. But I also think it goes beyond the commercial to the cultural. People seem to want visual media to alternately attract and repel them; the audience wants to both identify with and reject who and what they are seeing, to have their prejudices challenged and confirmed at the same time. It's hard for me to not see this as a type of psychological straight-jacket, as it would appear to make real growth or insight on the part of the audience next to impossible. I think The Sopranos is an excellent example of utterly brilliant social commentary that is missed by most of the audience because they are transfixed on individual characters, often to the point of taking on the speech patterns of one of the characters in their own life (I've actually seen adults do this), even if they've never even been to New Jersey, and even if they would never engage in criminal behaviour themselves.

I discovered Bukowski's poetry when I was a teenager. I was browsing in a bookstore one day, and I decided to pick up one of his books. I was amused with the boldness of his words. He could write about something embarrassing in his life and not seem to care how his audience would judge him. I didn't like poetry at the time, but I liked his poetry because it was something that I could relate to. I was even inspired to write my own poetry. Thank you for your work, Mr. Bukowski.

Philosophy should be taught more in high school. There aren’t enough deep thinkers anymore. Everybody performs mindless tasks thinking they will benefit their futures when really it’s just another a cycle of performing dreadful tasks until you retire, then ultimately die after not living your ideal life. The time on earth you have is a beautiful gift that’s wrapped in dog shit. Life has great potential but naturally it sucks ass, and it’s those who think whether or not they’ll be happy following their current path that truly realize they need a change.

I'm about to graduate high school, your comment is exactly what I've been thinking these whole days, it's so strange. I share your point of view and opinion, they should implement philosophy all three years in high school, I only got it for 6 months, fucking loved it, I hate school, but philosophy made me love going to school Tuesdays and Fridays. Changed me a lot, and i got mad at my classmates when they would trash philosophy saying it's boring and makes them go to sleep, they even made fun of the nice and pacient teacher with cute sweaters that would teach us philosophy. Bunch of assholes.

My favorite Bukowski quote is "Find what you love, and let it kill you." Edit: It's come to my attention that this was not Bukowski. As someone who had acne from age 13 to 29, I can relate. When everyday you wake up and have to go out into the world covered in red bumps and acne, it destroys your self confidence. Especially considering I obsessively tried all types of skincare medications. I would religiously clean my face and use creams and ointments and still had acne. It made me feel hopeless. I knew it was just a physical appearance thing and other people have it worse but when you see the outside of yourself as ugly or dirty, the inside catches up. Luckily, after getting onto Adapalene gel, my acne is almost no existent but the thought patterns and behaviors still linger. Not being cocky but I am considered “handsome and look good”, this is what friends and women have told me but I am still programmed with an inherent insecurity that stops me from pursuing or accepting advances of the opposite sex.

Then you're just in the process of realising that you're a free young person. Just don't sob in it. Won't help a bit. Keep it simple. Do something that you enjoy instead and fuck the prestige of doing something that corrupt ideals of Western society tells you to do. Keep in mind that society often time equals the people that surround you. kns682 I think it’s about finding that sweet spot between effort and complete surrender. I’m sure Bukowski had to ‘try’ too, he’s just choosing to highlight the fact that the best things in life are about letting go as opposed to TRYing to control. Put it this way: in meditation you can’t get away with NOT letting go :-) it’s the main ingredient.

Bukowski wanted the best for us, as counter-intuitive “don’t try” sounds. You said it in this video. Once you realize your passion, you won’t have to try a day in your life. Because working towards a passion is not trying at it, it’s manifesting your destiny, and to try to do anything but that is trying to try.

Reminds me of my favorite poem of his "air and light and time and space" ”- you know, I’ve either had a family, a job, something has always been in the way but now I’ve sold my house, I’ve found this place, a large studio, you should see the space and the light. for the first time in my life I’m going to have a place and the time to create.” no baby, if you’re going to create you’re going to create whether you work 16 hours a day in a coal mine or you’re going to create in a small room with 3 children while you’re on welfare, you’re going to create with part of your mind and your body blown away, you’re going to create blind crippled demented, you’re going to create with a cat crawling up your back while the whole city trembles in earthquake, bombardment, flood and fire. baby, air and light and time and space have nothing to do with it and don’t create anything except maybe a longer life to find new excuses for. ~ Charles Bukowski, from The Last Night of the Earth Poems

@@StarmenRock You're right. This was definitely out of context and may give everyone the wrong idea. We need to take from Bukowski's writings what seems useful and meaningful to our personal lives and leave the rest of it because even though he's a great writer, he may have sometimes wrote something that isn't inspiring or cool, maybe he meant something else entirely, etc. All of the philosophers are humans after all. I think he mostly missed the point, which is clear from what Bukowski said in the rest of the letter and elsewhere. "...someone once asked him, "What do you do? How do you write, create?" To which, he replied: "You don’t try. That’s very important: ‘not’ to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It’s like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks you make a pet out of it.” "We work too hard. We try too hard. Don't try. Don't work. It's there. It's been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb. There's been too much direction. It's all free, we needn't be told. Classes? Classes are for asses. Writing a poem is as easy as beating your meat or drinking a bottle of beer." He practiced this advice when he wrote. He'd just sit down, full of wine, and write without pausing in the middle of the poem. It wasn't work, he just let it flow. Then he'd wake up the next day and see what he had.
