FILM DESCRIPTION:
Alice and Jack are lucky to be living in the idealized community of Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. The 1950's societal optimism espoused by their CEO, Frank--equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach--anchors every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia. While the husbands spend every day inside the Victory Project Headquarters, working on the "development of progressive materials," their wives--including Frank's elegant partner, Shelley--get to spend their time enjoying the beauty, luxury and debauchery of their community. Life is perfect, with every resident's needs met by the company. All they ask in return is discretion and unquestioning commitment to the Victory cause. But when cracks in her idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can't help questioning exactly what they're doing in Victory, and why. If Alice is strapped to a bed all day, shouldn't Jack be responsible for changing her nappies, making sure she doesn't suffer from atrophy in her legs from lack of use? And wouldn't any of her friends or coworkers be looking for her? She's a surgeon, after all!

If jack didn’t go into the simulation with her she would’ve been in there without him, letting her know something is wrong. And Jack faked her death to make sure nobody looked for her. Edit: I forgot to mention that every time Jack went to “work” he was woke from the simulation and that’s where he cared for her and kept her real body hydrated.

The twist is honestly more unsettling even on rewatches. Hell I noticed on a second rewatch pretty much *EVERYTHING* Jack does is a red flag... And we the audiences are so groomed by society by the action of giving someone a pass of doing something horrible because "oh but they're pretty, hot, etc." This movie is no exception. When I see red flags on someone, I see them.

Honestly loved the twist in this movie and didn't see it coming. Was a lot like The Visit in that the answer was so simple and classic that my brain didn't connect the dots. Very refreshing. And the visual execution of it was entrancing.

You’re missing the point. The era chosen and culture of the simulation is a great indicator that it wasn’t just about working, but escaping the corrosive nature of a dystopian future that was stealing his life and wife. If simply becoming another cog in the machine solved actual problems, people would be less miserable right now. Add another 25 years and it will be even worse.

Well in the original script Alice and Jack were just co workers, he kidnapped her after work and did this to her. They changed it to make Jack seem not that dark, but he still definitely comes off that way. In the end I believe Violet (shy new girl) was confirmed to have not had a previous relationship with her husband, implying he just kidnapped the first woman he saw (I think it’s likely he stalked her and chose her beforehand though). It’s also possible some of the other wives (likely Margaret) were just kidnapped by men they didn’t know and chosen to be their wives.

Not sure it makes a lot of sense to kidnap a woman to live in a simulation. Maybe if you have no one in the real world and want something more akin to a traditional marriage to have a relationship with. But there would certainly be women who want to live in the simulation as well who also want a traditional life, so why not pair with them?

Lol. Why do people need every little detail explained in a movie/show? If something isn't explicitly explained, it's up to you to fill in the details. Maybe she had quit her job shortly prior to her husband trapping her in Project Victory. And even if she had quit her job, that still leaves the possibility or her family and friends growing concerned about her and her whereabouts. Maybe he's only had her trapped in the simulated reality for a few days and that's why no one is concerned? It could be anything. Take your pick.

I actually felt the complete opposite. Went in with very low expecations expecting the story to be some outlandish and abstract metaphor or allegory. The reveal that it was all set in the real world made the stakes so tangible and raw, it totally won me over.

They never explained it or so many other things. Devil's advocate over here, if they had established that she lost her parents and that the long work hours of her job made it impossible to find friends it would have explained how he was able to make her disappear AND add a little more depth to the movie by showing that there were some advantages to staying in Victory if she was willing to trade her hard life for a different one of her own choice.

Because he wanted to be the sole breadwinner. It wouldn't have been enough for him if they both had jobs, he wanted all the respect he didn't give her. I know not everyone was impressed with his acting, but I thought Harry played a sinister creep very well. I hope he plays more villains in the future.

I thought it was decent. Yes it was a mixture of the original stepford wives , matrix even a bit of the 13th floor. Nowadays it’s hard to find an original story. It’s been done so many times before. I also found it was an adaptation of how house wives really feel however between being brainwashed and afraid to express it makes them feel trapped. How she said I “enjoyed “ working . Even though in her real relationship in the real world I have a funny feeling that was the first time she admitted it to him. You can’t live a life your forced into. It can make you feel everything she was feeling. Walls closing in, drowning and being suffocated. I really enjoyed this movie.

They are not going to show all the nitty gritty in the movie. It's implied that Jack does all this when he logs off the simulation to go back into the real world.

When he goes back to the real world, he provides all of her medical needs, works enough hours to pay for presumably, expensive simulation and maintains the company equipment. I guess we’re just supposed to accept that he actually has time for all this. And if he does, then he must not spend that much time in the virtual reality world, so what is even the point? Nothing about this movie makes sense.

Like all cult leaders, they gloss over the details when they sell the idea of a 'new world' and once the people, innocent or greedy, are fully indoctrinated they all have to suffer because they're in too deep and can't leave. I kinda wish the movie had shown that part more.

Plot and ending would've been so much better if it turned out she was disabled in real life. And the husband did this to help her cope. But no, it had to be mental kidnapping that makes no sense and riddled in plot holes

They said the simulation has been on for just over a year. So some of them have definitely been there a year, I’d say this applies to Jack and Alice because Jack seems to be very important to the project.

This whole movie is so stupid. He leaves at 8am to go back to miserable life comes back at like 6pm. He has like 14 hours which most of it would’ve just been sleeping with his wife anyway. Spends all this money just to SLEEP and have fake parties he knows the truth behind. How is it the perfect world? Someone please fire the writers 😂

Agreed it makes no sense. The tension in their marriage was that he had no job and she was overworked. Now he has to work anyway and on top of that take care of all her medical needs when he comes home and maintain the company’s equipment. He’s working way harder than if he had just gotten a job while she was awake and worked on their marriage.

To all the people saying that all he had to do was a get a job in the real world and his wife would have been happy - it's not that simple. He's clearly not as edcuated and successful as his wife is. She's a doctor and a surgery resident. He's a bum. No matter what job he gets, it will never be on par with his wife's career. No woman is going to want a man who makes far less than her and is nowhere near as educated.
