CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) loses his cool at Whammy Burger when informed that they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30 am.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

Sheila is fantastic in this scene. She's so bored at her job that she finds this situation amusing rather than scary.
@avadakedavra69
@avadakedavra69 2 жыл бұрын
The genius behind Sheila being portrayed as the fed up fast food worker is that it adds to the already existing symbolism of dismantling the faulty system. But I think it is kind of weird for Sheila to have an apparent attraction to Foster as she is seen nursing her pen and having been enthralled by his behavior. I wonder if that was a scripted thing or a post production thing? Sheila must've seen Basic Instinct before D-Fens busted into the WhammyBurger.

@@avadakedavra69 She was messing with him. She wasn't attracted at all. Glasses, dressed somewhere between early 1960s office worker and a Mormon missionary, why would she be attracted to him? “And you, ma’am, how’s the food? URGGHHBLUP! I think we have a critic.” Epic line, epic delivery. How Michael Douglas didn’t win an Oscar for his performance is beyond me. But then, perhaps this film struck too close to home for some people.

Sheila makes this scene. If she was scared and terrified like the rest of the employees and customers, she would have just been another face in the crowd, but the fact that she seems to be loving the excitement, and has a rather sarcastic attitude and seems to be reveling in the confrontation between Rick and Bill, makes her performance the most interesting and amusing in this scene.

Fun fact; During the Whammyburger scene, Deedee Pfeiffer as Sheila had a hard time staying in character after Bill Foster pulls out a firearm, as his lines afterward kept making her giggle and laugh. During my teens I was like that, I didn't shoot the ceiling, but I always looked scared and shy. People thought I was scared of them, they were very wrong. I was a black hole waiting to happen. It's amazing that when you can't control your anger, when you eventually lose it, you suck everyone around you into your problem. Some people explode immediately after an altercation, and people know to stay clear and avoid them. But a black hole gives them no chance, it's as if they are stuck in an event horizon. Thankfully I'm now more of a white dwarf nearing a black dwarf existence.

@@stephenhauer9055 I used to work at McDonalds and that was pretty much the same policy. Once breakfast time ends, you had to remove what was left. The only thing they saved was the meat. Everything else got thrown out because it would turn soggy. Funny thing is, when reheated, the meat actually made it taste better. One of those mysteries I've never figured out because no customer ever complained that the meat was overcooked. Might have something to do with my method. I knew it was already cooked so I heated it on the grill just enough to make it hot because I always feared I would burn it and it would be harder than cardboard. But trust me, the eggs, biscuits and other stuff, they went in the garbage. There's simply no way to reheat those and have them taste any good.

The fact that he changes his mind and orders lunch is such a genius idea. It literally makes the purpose for this entire situation completely irrelevant and pointless. It's genius because it shows us just how insane he really is.

He changed his mind because the script wanted to show the viewer the flat burger compared to the advertised one, which we all have seen in real life. We can understand where he is coming from. Same with him ordering at 11:33, the viewer can relate to his frustration, especially when they infact have breakfast meals on the shelf, but he can’t order one.
