Well, this is a giggle. We headed to the Netherlands to drive the Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70, a long name for a small car that has spectacular performance.
Company founder Joop Donkervoort started his business importing Lotus, then Caterham, 7s. But he had to modify them slightly so they could be sold legally in continental Europe. He ended up producing his own car and he hasn't stopped creating since.
This is his company's latest model: the Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70, made to celebrate his 70th birthday. It's wild: it has a 415bhp Audi 5-cylinder engine under the hood, on Nankang track day tyres it's said to be able to corner at 2G. It's beautifully put together, has a top speed of 174mph, can do 0-62mph in a claimed 2.7sec and costs, including taxes, some £176,000 in the UK.

I love Donkervoorts. I really considered the older 4cyl D8 hardtop but chickened out and got a 911. I keep coming back to look at them and wish they did the 5cyl with the hardtop as I don't like open cars. On holiday last year in the west of Ireland I met a guy with a old 7 style car. I knew it wasn't a Caterham and since it was on Dutch plates I asked if it was a Donkervoort. He couldn't believe I knew what a Donkervoort was. His car turned out to be one of the original Lotus 7s imported to Holland and modified by Donkervoort to be legal. 😎

You don't really see it in that shot but the exhaust exits diagonally. Because of the heat that the exhaust produces, there needs to be a gap between the body panel and exhaust tip.

As the car is driven I assume it just got a hit on it. It looks like it`s dented.- I have seen quite a few Donkervoorts and the quality was really good for a car like that. You would not see a fault like this on it normally. - I am looking for a cheap one for years, that`s why I have seen a lot of them.

@@marcnobel3938 I did the launch photos of this car and looking at the photos from then, the exhaust trim was perfect then so I assume it's been damaged slightly since then. The build quality is incredibly high on the car, I was very impressed.

@@Ssh52 if you accept half the parts falling off that Kitcat the 3rd time you mash the throttle, then that's a real alternative I think.

Yep, a Caterham 620R is every bit as quick as this thing and a third of the price. The D8 GTO-JD70 is an awesome looking car but not worth an extra £120k over the Caterham 620R

@@phymat1 have you even ever seen a Donkervoort in person? I've been in their factory and then it starts making a lot more sense. This is miles apart from a Caterham, not in performance but in quality, finish, customisation and flexibility of use. This car is both a supercar slayer on track as a relatively refined GT when you take the possibilities of the suspension settings, brake bias and multistage traction control into account. It's a real and thoroughly developed and continuously improved supersportscar. When they entered gt4 they beat everyone... With nearly a road car...

Only a person who really knows how an engine works, will never rev an engine, as in the end, it's disastrous. You see an engine need resistance, in order to have all working, like oil lubrication, which only works sufficient while driving.

I don't know what's wrong with these replies but you'd think people don't even want to hear the engine. He doesn't have to drive it fast to get the sound to happen. It's easy to respect the car AND let the noise come out.

70 = JD. Nice detail in the grill logo. If I'd be able to spend these amount Euro's on a car. It would be something like this. Best of all. Just take it to your local Audi workshop for the maintenance. Perfect package.

Love it, the seats looks amazing, seatbelts are so logical. That 5 cyc sound is a cross between an "OG" Audi Quattro and a VR6 Carrado, simply amazing and unique. Pause on that carbon rattle snake like weave, crazy!

Nope , the Viper ia a heavy car with a huge truck engine. The D8 is exactly the opposite . It's how the Dutch do a Lotus Super 7.

Looks really nice and appealing until the price is revealed. £141,000 for what is almost a "kit car". Though they build it for you. However, I'd rather save a load of money and get a new, 992, 911 Carrera 4S cabrio.

Steering wheel does not look centralized with the driver. Could do with being moved a bit to the right, would keep catching your elbow on the door when driving.

I am sure that it is worth every penny to some folk. By that I mean you can see why it costs so much. However That price puts it bang up against the most exotic of the Morgans, which have tremendous road presence, even if not the outrageous performance. No hum....

Hmm.. einem Beifahrer wird das aber nicht gut tun. Schaut mal wie oft der mit seinem Ellenbogen über die Mitte fuchtelt. 3. Gang = Seitenhieb. Ausserdem fehlen Anhänherkupplung und Dachgepäckträger - wie ist der Kofferraum?
