This really touched me, Mr. Laws. I was raised by my Grandmother. When I was little every night at bedtime we would say the Lord's prayer. Two days ago my wife and I were baptized. I could hear her saying that prayer. The good Lord only knows what would happened to me if it wasn't for her. So thank you for this my friend. God bless you.

Growing up in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia was a playground for us back when I was a child. We played in those hills for hours at a time. I still love the mountains. I remember my grandma and her ringer washer and the many quilts she made by hand . She worked hard but lived a healthy life until she was 96. My mom also lived to 96 who just passed away this year. The mountains are calling and I must go. Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers who are watching. I'll see you again in heaven mom.

My grandma was the toughest woman I ever knew. She raised 12 kids in a two room cabin with a loft, cooked on an old wood cook stove in the heat of Kentucky summers, and her children never went hungry. Sometimes the meals were just fried green tomatoes or soup made from chicken feet, but her and grandpa provided. Her only fear was lightning due to when she was a girl, her best friend was killed by lightning riding a mule in from the field as a storm was breaking. She would sit behind a door in her rocker during storms and just keep saying "Oh Lordy" over and over. She died at age 64, and by today's standards people would guess her age to be upper 80's by appearance.

Another moving video from Mr. Donnie Laws. I thank God for the women who loved and cared for this little boy. Both of my grandmothers were so kind. They made sure that I had everything that I needed. They tried their best to teach me what was right, and the consequences of getting it wrong. They fed me in so many ways. They corrected me when I needed it. They took me to the dry goods store and made sure that I had a good pair of blue jeans and new tennis shoes. They cooked every meal that I ate as a kid. It was always a good one and I cleaned my plate every time, because they would not allow me to waste a bite. They took me to church on Sunday and made sure that I did my work in school everyday of the week. I still remember my grandma hollering for me to “come into this house, it’s getting dark.” They made me take a bath, and they would check that I cleaned “real good” behind my ears. They taught me how to say my prayers, being thankful for all that I had. They would let me sleep with my window open in my bedroom when it was so hot here in the south. In the mornings, at the start of my day, they would always make sure that I had a big hug. They always squeezed me so tightly. And they would always tell me to”mind your manners” as i ran out through that screen door. Thank you Mr. Laws for stirring up all of those memories of the beautiful women who raised me and cared for me. God bless y’all. - Tennessee Smoky

I'm only 47 but I was blessed to be raised by my grandparents in the mountains of NW North Carolina. I would trade a year of my life to have one more of my grandmother's cakes of corn bread and pintos from that old wood cook stove cooked with lard we rendered from our hogs we raised on slop, and canned sour kraut at dinner time with a dozen of my family joining in. She passed away in 2012 at the age of 99 after raising 8 kids and then 2 more counting my cousin and me. I have never missed anyone as much.

Woo! I remember my Dad’s mom always cooking big old cat head biscuits, gravy, mashed potatoes and fatback! Good eating with the whole family around the kitchen table. Dad’s mom got her finger caught in the wringer one time and messed it up...crooked for the rest of her life (today, she’d have had surgery, but then, she just bandaged it up and kept going.) So grateful for our sweet forebearers... I was fortunate to know both of my grandmothers and two of my great grandmothers. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.❤🙏🏻Jane in SC

My Mammy passed away last October. She was the last of my gramdparents. She would talk if asked about the old times before her mind started to go and it never ceased to amaze me how people made do with what they had back then, or that they were happy despite living in what modern times would call abject poverty. RIP Mammy. I took your words to heart and I know how good I have it because of the sacrificices you made.

Mommy washed all day on Tuesday. Wringer washer on the front porch. Wash tubs full of rinse water. And clothes baskets to carry it all to and from the clothesline 30 yards away. When Dad and me finally got a waterline ran from a spring in the hillside, across the creek, across the dirt driveway, up through the yard to a spicket just off the porch and to the kitchen, my Mommy cried happy tears! Still no bathroom but running water in the kitchen and a water hose to the washer on the porch!❤ This one brought tears for me too. Good one Donnie!

THANK YOU Today we have it so much easier. In America there is no reason for any children or adults to go hungry. We have so many food pantries. We have been part of & started several food programs since we got married in 1980. This is our (mine) way of remembering the struggles my family had. To never forget. TO MAKE SURE NO CHILD EVER GOES HUNGRY IN OUR COMMUNITY. Back then every day one was hungry. My Great Grandma had 13 children IT WAS SO HARD. Life was hard. God bless all Mother's this Mother's Day. My Grandmother was born in 1916 or 1918; Censes had two different dates on her birth. She had 13 children and had lost seven of them before she passed in 2011. Shurely miss her. My Mother passed at age age 61. She had survived breast cancer twenty years and had to have heart surgery because she had Rumatic Fever as a child and it left her heart valve damaged. Sadly she passed from heart complications. I miss them both so dearly. Their deaths devastated me severely. I was hysterical loosing my Mother. Thinking of them and remembering them. God Bless you all. Thank God for our Mother's. What a beautiful tribute to honor our forbears. I never cease to be filled with gratitude for the wisdom handed down to me from my mother-raised in a coal mining camp on the side of a mountain, she taught me more about how to live and treat people than a whole college full of psychologists ever could. What a beautiful tribute to the mothers who were there before ours were Donnie! I appreciated you showing all of the great and hard things they all had to do so we could be here someday living an easier life. They all wanted things to be better for us, not so hard, not so scary. (like losing babies or children before they were grown to disease and hard living.) They got their wish but I wish that we hadn't lost their creativity and their work ethic. My Big Mama (Granma) came from a farm. She taught me how to sew, how to grow crops, clean the house, and above all, where my food came from! I plucked a chicken when I was ten and went to a pig stickin' at eighteen! My Mom was mad at her (especially the chicken!) but I feel blessed that I know these things. I understand what's on my table and I thank God for it every day! I hope you and all of the Moms in your family have a very blessed Mother's Day!

Once again Mr. Laws' video took me back in time to my child hood and memories of my Mom. She was a hard working Appalachian Mom who had very few material things during her life. She passed away at the young age of sixty eight. I miss her so much especially when I need advise. Happy Mother's day Mom I miss you and love you.

How well I remember! They were extremely tough and resourceful. Man it would get hot in the summer when they cooked. Thank God for our Grandparents and parents. No one can even begin to imagine what they endured, just to survive. And yes always putting God first an teaching the children an grand children about Jesus.

THAT BIG WOOD STOVE, THE FURNITURE, THE OLD RINGER WASHER, EVEN THE dead chicken GETTING PLUCKED . I REMEMBER THE SMELL OF THE FEATHERS TOO,WHEN THEY WERE WET. WE HAD BIG FEATHER TICKS ON OUR BEDS AND FEATHER PILLOWS TOO. GOD BLESS ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE, AND GOD BLESS DONNIE FOR THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO.

Well done my friend! This will be my third Mother's Day without my Mom. I miss her every single day. Every day. I I miss my Grandmother's as well. My Grandma in Tennessee, my Mom's Mom, had a coal pile outside. She cooked an old coal stove until the mid to late 1970's. She made the BEST biscuits in the world! There was nothing better than a freshly sliced tomato with leftover bacon on a cold biscuit! Grandma also used a wringer washer that was in the side screened in porch, she used it until the day she passed away. When the day comes that pictures are all you have left, you cherish them beyond what words can say. Thank you Donnie. ❤ I have tears in my eyes with a smile on my face. 💞 ~ APRIL LIPKE

Donnie, Thank you for dedicating this video to our great grandmothers and grandmothers. My great grandmother, Maggie Laws, and my grandmother, Jennie Mae Weaver were born and grew up in WV. I have never visited WV or received much information from my now deceased grandmother (who migrated to Maine). Watching your videos gives me a glimpse into their lives and I'm very grateful to you for allowing me to gain insight into how they lived. You are so right--it was a hard life, but it had many rewards. I've enjoyed all of your videos that I have viewed!

Really nice Donnie! An excellent video!! They worked hard to make sure the family was taken care of. Its easy to say that when you think of modern families with 2 or 3 kids, or even 6 like with me and my brothers and sisters. But from my fathers line all the way back to 1760 my grandmothers had between 11 - 19 kids, my Dad was 1 of 13 siblings. I cant even imagine trying to feed that many kids, but they did! I sure miss that feeling of walking in the kitchen and being greeted by the best food and biggest heart there was.
