I'm now over 80 and nearing the end of this journey. I've arranged to be cremated and have my ashes scattered at sunset from a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Nobody I've known or loved in this life is still alive. Nobody I've known or loved will be there for the scattering of my ashes, but my last request is to have this song played as my ashes are scattered to the wind. Nobody I've known will be there to hear the song, only people who are paid to be there will hear it. But this is my last wish, and t'would be the sweetest thing to know this beautiful song will be playing. I should add, that I'm in excellent health, and I don't expect to check out anytime soon. I'm just saying how I'd like to have my ashes disposed of when the time finally comes.

For all of you younger fans who have just recently discovered this incredible song: Donovan was only NINETEEN years old when he wrote it. What a brilliant mind and beautiful heart!

I'm a (not so!) Younger fan - I'm 47 - but have listened to this song for quite a few years now. I didn't realise he was that age when he wrote it. This song is a masterpiece, a beautiful timeless song and I can think everyone can relate to this song. I love the lyrics, musical arrangement and his vocals. When I listen to this, I just stop whatever I'm doing and just listen so I can fully appreciate it. Just brilliant.

People used to laugh at us, I was 30 went I realised the man I needed was 64. He fought against it but its when I came upon him playing this song I knew I was right. We were lucky and had 32 wonderful years together. Now when I'm feeling down, I look at our photo's and play this. It helps me remember all of those wonderful years. I miss you my darling.
@ihateallyall3 ай бұрын
that’s wonderful. I am a young woman, my man is 20 years my senior, we’ve been together a good 6 years and I hope to have 60 more…. I’ll take what I can get I’ve acknowledged this age difference and how I might have to spend some years alone, but that kind of love, oh is it worth it so… I think you’d take a lot of comfort in “If We Were Vampires” by Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit. please give it a listen ❤

“it’s knowing that this can’t go on forever, likely one of us will have to spend some days alone. maybe we’ll get 40 years together, but one day I’ll be gone, and one day you’ll be gone. if we were vampires and death was a joke, we’d go out on the sidewalk and smoke. laugh at all the lovers and their plans, I wouldn’t feel the need to hold your hand. maybe time running out is a gift, I’ll work hard to the end of my shift, and give you every second I can find… and hope it isn’t me who’s left behind”

This song pulls at my heartstrings, it is 1965 and I am 15 years old again. A time when it was good to be a teenager and when anything and everything was possible. I was so lucky to be able to watch live bands like, The Who, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Byrds, The Beachboys, The Kinks, The Hollies and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all of which you could meet at the stage door after the show to get their autographs! I have many lifelong memories of the amazing 60's, an era which I was privileged to be part of and one which can never be repeated. Great times!

When I hear the harmonica in this song I return to being that happy little girl again and listening to my dad playing his harmonica on a chair with a beer sitting on the kitchen bench.. He was happy, we were happy...So now I remember regardless of what arrows shoot at us during our lives, it's songs like this that remind us that we are still that person and will never change regardless of the world.. Perfect tune to play when I pass over to the other side in peace 🕊🕊🕊

@Xzibetia, don't be sad. The sixties has brought some great music and great ideas. Unfortunately, most of these ideas never came to fruition - I think it's mostly because of the ridiculous drug consumption. There's a little hippie revival happening now. You have a chance to pickup the good stuff - make love not war, love the earth, peace... - but not repeat the crap (drugs). Maybe, this time the ideas will stick and start to become main stream... That surely would be a great help for getting a handle on todays environmental and social problems that seem to get worse by the day... You have your whole productive life ahead of you! I wish for you, that you'll be able to make good use of it, and find happiness, fulfillment, and joy through contributing to the continuation of the development this beautiful creation...

Wow Thomas thank you so much for u insightfull and kind comment. This is a song from a time when I was a boy and the world seemed a lot more simple than now. A melody from old evenings on an old farm, around an old radio gramophone - and a world that was spinning like the yellow-labeled 45'er on the turntable as a little boy lay with his face in his arms, staring at the vinyl and imagining the picture that the wind-catcher was painting for him.

There was a style of performance at this time where a person would get up and sing, and play the guitar with music that they wrote to a poem they wrote. And the song had a bass part and chords. And the bass was that keen strike on the downbeat and the chords grow out of it to make a rhythm. And that's a kind of music that will endure forever and speak anew to one generation after another.

so evidently you're a '53 Baby like me as i too was 14 in '67 when this came out and always thought Donovan did a far better version that Dylan did..many people didn't agree, but many young girls did, as they thought Donovan was just a cooler version, which i happened to agree with..I"m not much into folk stuff but i really love Donovans stuff..

How true these words are. You're young, carefree, and 16. The future is a distant future. Then one day you wake up and you're almost at the end of your journey. And your wonder where the years flew by. Cherish each day that God blesses you with. They are a gift

no matter what some may think and say about Donavan-- he is not a mere flash in the 60s pan. This song is not to be taken lightly. It has more meaning than most realize. It hurts to hear it at times but it is huge on an emotional scale .....when you need to hear it at those moments . If you truly understand what this song means and what it is about...well...congrats....you have reached maturity. Best to all...

I can’t listen to this song enough. The 80s were my decade, but I find myself always playing the breathtaking songs of the 60s. Take me back in time, let me be a child of the 60s, with flowers in my hair, and peace signs, and music like this masterpiece. I want to be a teenage girl, starring up at Donovan on stage singing this song, dreaming he’s singing it to me. He is a musical genius! The 60s were full of breathtakingly talented geniuses!

This song makes me want to go back to my teens. I was 16 when this song came out. So glad I grew up in the 60's-70's. So many life experiences and great music. It was nice to a have a cousin in the music industry that would swing by my house in a limo and say 'get in' and we were off to meet the next big group. Those were the days. Got to meet so many legends, of course they were not legends then. What fun we had.
