Donovan performing Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death"
Recorded at Westfield High School in New Jersey
on October 29,1965
This is from the earliest Donovan live recording I have ever
uncovered. It was on one side of a 60 minute cassette and
only contained seven of a possible twelve or so Song Concert.
If anybody watching this video has the complete soundboard
recording, I would deeply appreciate contacting me. Thanks,

Unfortunately, not the full Concert Recording. This was on one side of a 60 minute cassette I obtained in 1974. Never uncovered the Full Show.

This was the first song my guitar teacher wanted me to learn. I perfected the finger-picking style but could never manage the entire song. At the time it seemed horribly complex.

It reveals a bit more about his heart and understanding if you add it to his unsuccessful attempt to help Crosby with his cocaine addiction, and his adoption of Brian Jones son.

This Machine Kills ( 1 min 50 secs ) is a case of Donovan showing his flair for cool : - Don and Bob both dug Woody, who had a sticker on his guitar saying " This machine kills fascists " . True genius so often shows itself this way .........

@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 I love Julie Felix, I went to see her when I was fifteen, because she played fingerstyle guitar, and did loads of Donovan songs - a kind of poor man''s Donovan. I bought a couple of her albums, and almost more importantly, I watched her telly program religiously, not the least because she had Paco Pena on every week doing a flamenco guitar solo. BUT : - I also have a serious complaint. When she did Masters of War she had the audacity to leave out the last verse, obviously thinking it is a bit too heavy for a family audience. When she wins the Nobel Prize, she will be in a position to tell Bob how to write a Bob song ! If you can't take the heat, don't do the song, as the saying goes ................................................................. P.S. She does Needle in a similar " I'm glad I never met any nasty junkies " kind of way.

Love you Donovan since I was 14 or 15 years old, oh, so long, long time ago. My first concert I saw you was in the 1960's at the Hollywood Bowl. Last time I saw you in concert was in Monterey, California about 2010. Been a huge fan forever. Have your books, Lp's, Box Sets, DVD's, posters, CD'S, and the hard to find, "Donovan Live in Japan 1973." LP.

Stellar! This is one of my favorite Page acoustic songs although it morphed into Black Mountain Side for Page. Apparently Al Stewart taught it to Jimmy. "Are we rolling Jimmy?" Take care my Celtic brother. Terri

This is not a Page tune - it's an original Bert Jansch song being covered here by Donovan - you're probably thinking of Black Waterside which was a folk piece that was passed to Bert and then done by Jimmy Page who renamed it Black Mountainside.

His first album (called "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid" in the UK) contained about half covers (including 'traditional' songs) and half original compositions, IIRC. After that, it became pretty much all original material, I think.

@@papercup2517 What's Bin Did, May 1965, includes a reworking of Blind Willie Johnson's You're Gonna Need, which is for sure the hippest cover of a blues track anybody ever pulled off. I would love to know if Donovan stole the groove off somebody else, or it was all his own work. Runner up would be I'm So Glad by errrr ...... what was the name of that band, again ........... ?
