I always use a piece of rubber hose slipped onto the plug. This lets you tighten by hand without stripping the threads, then finish with ratchet. Keep wrenching Kenny- I'm watching!

Also NEVER put oil on the spark plug threads. I had a buddy tell me he could not get the plugs out of his air cooled VW bug engine. He told me that the last time he removed the plugs they were really stuck so he put engine oil on all the plugs to make them easier to get out. Well, air cooled engine heads get really hot. The oil simply baked into "coke" which is that black varnish crude you see on the bottom of well used well loved Cast Iron cooking pans. I got the plugs out for him and had to install all new threaded inserts. He learned his lesson the hard way.

No no no no no no no no no no! You are doing it wrong you always use a rubber hose! Never start a spark plug with a tool!

I use a piece of 3/8 fuel line, you can cet in tight spots and use to hand thread most of the way.

Last time I did plugs my cheap spark plug socket kept sticking on the plug and staying in the tube after I tightened the plug and pulled the extension out. I ended up doing the Eric the car guy method. I lowered the plug into the tube as low as my fingers would allow, and dropped it the rest of the way. Not my proudest moment, but so far so good

I have a set of multi length magnetic, swivel sockets for spark plugs from matco I got for like 60$ ten or so years ago… it has cut time off of hard to get at spark plug jobs and I totally recommend them… an example is the #8 cylinder on a catfish Camaro is a tight squeeze and these sockets help me get the whole job done in minutes

I just replaced the spark plugs on my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer using a socket with an extension, like you recommended. Thanks, useful information. Keep wrenching!

When I was younger the spark plug socket had a rubber insert to hold the plugs as we threaded them into the block. Probably still do, but yes this is the way I always installed the plugs. Never had any issues, better to plan well than to lament later! Keep on wrenchin’! 😎👍🏼
