I saw somebody disconnect the positive first wearing a ring, and their finger was the substitute for your example of a wrench. He now has a permanent scar in place of a wedding ring. Remove the negative first.

When sawing off exhaust with a Sawzall consider dulling that sharp point on the blade so if the exhaust pipe pinches the blade you don't poke a hole in whatever is above the pipe.

I remember I took the positive off before the negative once. The ratchet I was using touched the brake line right under the master cylinder. It created a spark and caught the brake line on fire for a few seconds 🔥

Fortunately I don't have a Chrysler product with that issue, but I sure am glad for the long life exhaust systems they're putting on vehicles these days. I got where I could put an entire exhaust system on an 83 escort in about a half hour. Glad those days are gone. Keep the good stuff coming Kenny.

I had a Mk1 VW Polo where it was a one piece system. When I collected the new one from the parts place getting it home was fun. It was too long to get in the car. So I did the sensible thing, I left the silencer sticking out the back of the boot and tied the tailgate down. I got some seriously odd looks off people as I drove it past people.

I have been told disconnecting positive first can cause voltage spikes and can cause damage to sensitive electronics. This applies in the electronics world as well working on radio systems, computers etc.

I guarantee you they can't tell you the why, only that they heard it somewhere. The battery doesn't know which side is disconnected so neither does the car. What I have seen shops do is leave it connected but use a capacitive shunt across the battery for welding. It has two giant clips like a charger with the device between them . This was at a muffler shop.

@@InsideOfMyOwnMind Yes, I bought mine from MAC tools back in the early 90's, probably close to when they first came out. It's called the "Battery anti zap" I have used it whenever welding on vehicles or equipment but do I know if it really works? No, not really, lol.

As someone who had a catalytic stolen and is also a booger welder, i used a 3" to 3" pipe coupler when welding the two straight halves together. Was such a good fit i almost didn't weld it, i did just to secure it but just some spot welds and zero leaks, looked clean 👌

About the battery when welding, I have heard this also but, I have seen others welding without disconnecting and they use the 'welding ground lead as close as possible to the weld to prevent the current traveling through out the vehicle' as the reason. I won't take that chance when it's so easy to disconnect in first place.
@rickschlosser6793

Do both. Disconnect the battery and connect the ground clamp as close to the weld as possible.

You did a real nice job Kenny, I'm not much of a welder either, my dad, God rest him, was an ace. I think you were just a little bit hot, that thin pipe is a pain. I try to go from side to side, in half or whole circles if possible. If it doesn't leak, that is all that matters. I'm surprised you didn't locate that crack and try to sling some on that, but if you are happy, I'm happy. Have a good one.

Eastwood Co. sells the exhaust welding clamps with holes in them like you described. I have a few of them and they're great for building custom exhaust systems. On the other hand, you could've also used a band clamp to attach the pipe at the back. They're available for both lap joints and butt joints and work well.

I've had to do this repair 3 times on my caravan with almost 400k on it. Those replacement flex pipes don't last as long as the original one but it sure beats replacing the converter. I think next time I'm going to try using a different flex pipe farther down in the exhaust to make it easier to change.

Disconnecting the battery does nothing to protect onboard electronics from stray voltage supplied by your welder . Remember that the ground wires running into all the modules are still connected to the car's frame , so they each become a potential path to ground for stray voltage. It doesn't hurt to disconnect at the battery , but the MOST important thing you can do is to insure that your WELD GROUND is attached firmly and as close as possible to where you plan to weld. then DON'T get careless with your stinger when moving around between welds . Try not to strike any unintended arcs . The closer the better , because even if ALL the wires are disconnected , the current coming from the welder can and will melt wires that accidentally become "live" .

The flex joint helps stabilize the engine on the motor mounts. You get a firm shift with a new flex pipe. If you find a motor mount is shot, replace it, or the flex pipe gets hit with extra stress.

Brother Kenny, I got excited the moment you pulled out the sawzall! Have you ever tried using "heat wrap"? I'm pretty sure that Mrs. Wrenching (Meg) will be happy to ride in the van again. You told me once that you have never changed a PCV valve on a 3.8 V6. Maybe when you change the brakes, you can try the PCV valve. By the way, my previous Chrysler Town and Country needed new front calipers and brake hoses. The pistons would rust on the calipers and the inside of the brake hoses would deteriorate to the point of shrinking inside. Poor brake fluid quality since it is so hydroscopic might be to blame. Oh there are so many things to do as maintenance on a vehicle!!

Put your tool and lawn and garden equipment lithium batteries in the refrigerator after using them for 10 minutes. Then take them out and plug them into the charger. The turn around is quicker and battery life is longer. Hot batteries don't recharge quickly and can kill their lifespan.

Amps too high, but I was a nuclear weld inspector not a welder, but they wouldn’t pass lol but hey, as long as it keeps the gasses sealed and doesn’t crack on you than you’ll be fine. It’s nothing critical, structural or anything. The second weld looked ALMOST like it wasn’t hot enough and not much penetration, but hard to tell from the angle and what you showed on the butt weld. And people wonder WHY are CATS are so easy to steel.30 secs= 100 bucks cash? I venture to think.DID the design engineers think that at what is probably the most expensive part on newer cars that MAYBE,just MAYBE we could make it harder to STEAL?but then of coarse you wouldn't have to buy a FACTORY REPLACEMENT made ONLY for your particular model of car. but wait there's more>the average Joe engineer that works on his own car WANTED to make a UNIVERSAL one that's oval shape 4 x 6 x 12 inches long and it only had 1 price 100 dollars and all makers of cars used that only,.but they had to lay him off.So now he's heading up his own car company TESLA.haha You get your choice 3 stock versions with colors red ,white, blue and black that's it.

Kenny, worked for years in industry both as a steamfitter/pipefitter and an Industrial Instrument Mechanic (industrial controls). When welding on equipment with sensitive electronics you disconnect power like you did here. The other thing to do is to connect your welder’s ground clamp as close to your weld as you can. This reduces stray eddy currents as much as possible. Something you didn’t mention and I thought you and your viewers would want to know. Car computers are expensive, PLCs and instrumentation make car parts look cheap. Keep wrenching buddy.
