Thanks so much for your support,
The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Barry, wife and I absolutely love your breakdown of your decision making process, where you explain the situation in front of you and the basis of the decision to sail responsibly. It’s a much needed lesson on responsible sailing in such a reckless world.
@antonioarroyas7662
@antonioarroyas7662 5 ай бұрын
I agree, Barry is frugal but not reckless. I give him credit on his decision to call for help on his way to Australia. There are far too many cases of people waiting until the very last minute before they send out a distress signal. I'm not sure if he's aware of it or not but he uses the swiss cheese model of risk management. It was on display when he was talking about his life raft along with the extra spare and the dihingey. A second expired life raft is nice to have in addition to the primary just in case. As an example, I carry an extra can of bear spray when I go camping in bear country. It's an older expired one but it still works and it's something I can fall back on just in case. When we're done our trip I can also use that extra can to show people how it's used and they can practice with it. Some of his small tips like putting the boat in gear while it's still tied up to ensure that it will actually go into gear before getting underway are fantastic pieces of advice. Being untied in the wind with no control is a terrible feeling. He also mentioned his ditch bag a few times in previous videos and it's something that I feel like doesn't get talked about on other sailing channels.

Wrong time of the season....wind all over the place. Winter is just beautiful in northern Queensland.....westerly winds.. clear skies.... I have been following your journey for a while with interest...May the winds be kind to you...especially if you decide crossing the Indian Ocean towads the Cape. I think the Suez is in question...? Maybe heading to the Philippines?

I came across your videos which I found entertaining and so I subscribed and started watching from when you bought your boat. I've not caught up to this one yet but on one of them you criticised cruise ship passengers some time 6 years ago which I thought was out of order. Not everyone can afford to sail the world in a yacht and it is the only way some people can see the world and the exotic places that you visit. I've been on cruises and seen places I would never have seen otherwise. I don't know whether you read all these comments but apart from that I find them entertaining, down to earth and also shows people places that they otherwise would never know existed. Keep it up and stay safe!

I've recently discovered your channel and been binge watching many episodes. Really makes me miss sailing. Nothing makes you appreciate good weather and being alive more than being at sea in persistent foul weather lol. I'm at an inflection point of sorts in life where acquiring another boat and taking up cruising again is a desirable possibility so we may cross paths one day if you're still out there. Anyway, stay safe and happy new year! And thanks for this channel!

They call em a "Rash guard" because surfers & boogie boarders wear em whilst catching waves. Bits of sand and such sicks in the wax all over the top surface of the boards. Bare bellied will give you a burning rash and sand your nipples clean off. Their light weight Lycra or spandex like material because other fabrics like cotton get too saturated and too heavy. Don't have to worry with sunscreen with a rash guard either. Like most everything, an actual name brand rash guard from a surf shop will cost ya 60 80 bucks. Can get the same shirt of similar material for 20 bucks elsewhere.

When I went down to Grenada to take a week long sailing class for blue water boats a few years ago I was amazed at how often you could find yourself on a collision course with another sailing vessel or powerboat (not counting the 2 other class buddy boats that intentionally targeted each other to reinforce the rules for right of passage). I cannot imagine the stress you endured navigating the field of big big boats which of course would win any contact in the ocean. Another great video Barry. Thanks for sharing!

Happy new year and hope you had a Merry Christmas, Barry. Stay safe out there. Fair winds and following seas. 5:13 I'm not a doctor, so definitely consult with one, but there is really no evidence to link salt and blood pressure. The study that kicked off this myth took rats, selectively bred them to develop a weakness to sodium, and then fed them massive amounts of salt. In other words, they manufactured a link. So don't worry about eating salt, you'll be fine.

There is abundant evidence that decreasing sodium intake reduces blood pressure in humans. A cursory read of any national heart foundation guidelines will explain this and a basic search will bring up many peer reviewed clinical studies. Barry 1. Try a sprinkle of cumin with your eggs. 2. "Plastic" rashguard tops are made for swimming/surfing/diving and anything that involves being wet. They keep you warm in the water as well as giving sun protection. Wet cotton weighs a ton and quickly gets saggy, stretches out of shape and chafes like a bastard. A good rashy is your friend. 3. Good luck with your other channel. I'll check it out. You look suave in the cotton suite and yellow cap in the trailer, but also spookily reminiscent of Harry Dean Stanton in the opening scenes of Paris Texas. 🤣 4. Calm seas and following winds to you mate. Love your work.
