I work in HR and recruiting and this video is 100% accurate. I actually hear a lot of people go with your first option, “I’m waiting to hear back from another company”, and let me tell you, nothing will take the air outta the room like that statement! ALWAYS treat an offer like you’re excited about it, even if you want to negotiate or aren’t ready to say yes. Hiring teams don’t love hiring people who aren’t excited about the prospect of joining their company.
@johnnyboy3949

Basically people in HR like you want boot lickers. Boot lickers don’t move your company forward and don’t have successful careers. Don’t lie, if a better opportunity came along you would move jobs, anyone with any sense would. What you want to hire is people with no sense and no ambition. Good luck trying to find the best people to work for you with that attitude. And even if you do get the best they won’t stay long. I bet your companies labour turnover is high if that is the attitude of HR. Workers are people, not assets.

@Meownightthecat because between the verbal offer you received from 1 person and the final written offer from the company, a lot can happen. The manager might be A-ok with the agreed upon salary and conditions, but will HR and higher-ups feel the same? What about the job description? Is it really what you were expecting and discussed during the process, or are there unexpected changes and additions? It's also a great way to make sure everything you negotiate will be applicable. Your current boss might be okay with your extra week off. But if they are leaving - and it happens more often than you think! - will the next boss be? If it's in your contract, it's official for everyone. Finally, it gives you time to rethink the offer with a clear mind and to see how the company works. If a simple offer takes forever to be sent, it can provide valuable insights on the workplace environment

Would you rather hear your date say “Sorry, you’re not really my type. It was nice meeting you though” or “Honestly, I was expecting you to be hotter. Your arms look kinda fat. I would feel embarrassed to walk down the street with you, so I don’t really want a second date.”? The example in the video is definitely not “passive aggressiveness” and “half-truths”. It’s just a kind and respectful way to talk to people. You wouldn’t want others to treat you like trash, so why would you be rude to others? There’s a difference between being honest and being blunt. And if you’re constantly too straightforward with people, noone will wanna be your friend anymore. You can keep telling yourself that you prefer people to be 100% honest with you, even if it hurts your feelings, but let’s be honest, it’s just your coping mechanism because you’ve been lied to or manipulated before, which has lowered your self-esteem, so it’s more comfortable for you to hear horrible stuff about yourself, even if people like you, because you know that people wouldn’t lie about the negative stuff. In reality, there’s many reasons for people to be rude to you that are not related to you as a person, but taking criticism just feels easier than being kind and loving towards yourself. Just so you’d know, constantly taking in negative comments and telling people everything that’s on your mind with no filter doesn’t make you better than everyone else. It’s not honest, it’s rude.

Honestly I'm thrown by this. It wouldn't occur to me that any functioning person would think to tell a potential employer that they're waiting to hear back from a preferable employer, that feels cringe-worthingly rude and obnoxious to me - but then I'm a dreadful people pleaser, not at all career driven and unhealthily conflict averse. My initial reaction to this was the same as yours, but the comments show me that most people don't think the same way as me and you and that's probably not us being oh-so-superior, a lot of people who've applied for more jobs than I ever will are clearly hearing this for the first time so clearly it's not an unusual thing to feel comfortable saying. The more you know!

Doesn't really work in the tech industry. They won't give you a written offer until you've already negotiated and verbally accepted it. If anything it's best to show excitement but also let them know you have other companies you're waiting to hear from so they are pressured to give you a higher offer that you can use as a jumping off point for negotiation with other companies

When I was hiring I had to go through multiple rounds of interviews. Some of them concluded with giving offers, but TBH they weren't the best pay. I didn't have any control over that and our HR wasn't in the habit of being flexible with pay. What was listed is what was offered. TWICE after I offered the position the candidates both said they were given offers by other employers. As an interviewer it took my hopes of filling our position because everyone in the company knew we weren't offering a lot.

This very much depends on your real world experience and not perceived value you are placing on it. You could very easily talk yourself out of a position if you're counter offer is not reasonable. This is potentially good advice, but if the original salary was £40k and you're trying to double it, it's just not realistic. I'm fortunate enough to work in a sector where there are precious few skilled candidates. This naturally gives me the advantage when negotiating

While this works in theory, in practice it tends to backfire. If you're waiting on a job from someone else, and another job comes to you, they're not looking to do the waiting game. The second you 'Hey, can I get the offer in writing to review the specifics?' they're probably going to tell you "Yeah, it'll be in your paperwork when you come in to sign it." They're not going to play this "Oh, well, I applied and now that you're offering, I want you to wait longer." game. And then going back to them with a "Hey. I made you wait, this company came along, if you want me with you, give me this." will 90% of the time earn you a "Ok, cool, good luck, bye!" you're showing people how to play with fire, and most people are going to get burned doing it like how you're telling them.

Right! Its always the one you want that comes later. Never fails. I gave up on a company and now they want to meet with me. I’m like, really?

Just apply to jobs you're excited about. Negotiation is easier and you can decide better.

No. Accept the job (after negotiating pay), then when the other job hires you, leave company B. Also, have your application for Company C ready, just in case. Some money is better than none, and a two-week notice is one-sided and usually not mandatory.

How it actually be: apply to 400 positions, get interviewed for 15 positions, get any contact back from 1 company, its for $7.25/hr, 80hr weeks, and must have 19 years experience

Okay a lot of these I can understand making the first response. But NOBODY who breathes air is stupid enough to tell a company "could you wait til I hear from this job I want more". So unrealistic.

How about just a 'Thanks but i'm not looking for something in the momment, i'll let you know in case this changes' ? Making too much out of so little.

My mind boggles with the fact that this woman can give so much varied advice about career choices and interview strategies, yet probably can't hold down a steady job or has had either more jobs than anyone she's giving advice too or has never had a job! She sounds like she had read countless job interview books from actual HR professionals but zero life experience herself..How can anyone take her seriously!
